HOT SHEET FOR FRIDAY APRIL 9, 2004

-- RADIO ONE --

1. THE CURRENT:

As the conflict in Iraq becomes more deadly, The Current
looks at whether the Sunni resistance will join forces with
the Shia. Also...how long will the Coalition hold up? Church
and state seem to be getting closer these days in the U-S.
Good Friday on The Current, a feature documentary by Frank
Faulk called "A True Story" on how that shift is affecting
Americans. And a panel of prominent Canadian politicians,
including Conservative MP Deborah Grey, NDP MP Bill Blaikie
and Liberal Senator Mobina Jaffer discuss how their faith
influences their political decisions. That's on The Current,
with Susan Ormiston, this morning at 8:30 (9:00 NT) on CBC
Radio One.

2. SOUNDS LIKE CANADA:

Deciphering holy words on Good Friday. There are more than
one hundred English-language Bible translations in existence
today. Shelagh Rogers speaks with Vancouver bible scholar
James Packer about translating the English Standard Version
Bible. And Nic Manojlovich, host of the television show
"Savoir Faire", shares his other passion - directing a
Toronto Serbian Orthodox choir in the liturgical music of
Holy Week. That's Sounds Like Canada, this morning at 10
(10:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

3. C'EST LA VIE:

Philippe Bélanger is only 29 years old. But he already holds
the prestigious job of organist at St. Joseph Oratory in
Montreal. But things might have turned out differently: if
the hours had been better, he might have become a jazz
trumpeter! Meet Philippe Bélanger on C'est la vie, with
Bernard St-Laurent, this morning at 11:30 (noon NT) and this
evening at 8:30 (9 NT) on CBC Radio One.

4. MUSIC FOR A GOOD FRIDAY AFTERNOON:

Join host Robert Harris on Good Friday for Music for a Good
Friday Afternoon. He'll offer music for the day -
sacred and secular, classical and non-classical, to
share in the reflective mood of the season. Music for a
Good Friday Afternoon, starting at noon (12:30 NT) on CBC
Radio One.

5. RICHARDSON'S ROUNDUP: ***last half-hour not heard in
Toronto***

Just four years ago, Annabel Lyon shed the title of piano
teacher for the label, "writer." Today she is earning high
praise: reviewers describe her new collection of three
novellas, "The Best Thing For You," as savvy, subversive and
succinct. And they call Lyon a dazzling stylist. Annabel
Lyon talks with Bill Richardson this afternoon on
Richardson's Roundup at 2 (2:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

6. LET IT SHINE:

Tune in to CBC Radio One Good Friday for Let It Shine, a
remarkable exploration of the rich tradition of gospel music
in Nova Scotia. Join host Shauntay Grant, a respected gospel
choir director and spoken word performer in Nova Scotia.
She'll explore several different traditions in gospel, and
host an in-studio concert by some of the finest bluegrass
and black gospel performers in Nova Scotia. They will
perform together for the first time ever - …and will seek
out - through music - the spirit that connects them - in
spite of their historical differences. Let It Shine, Good
Friday at 4 p.m. (4:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

7. TALKING BOOKS:

Two classic plays about the meaning of life - plays that

and "Zoo Story" tonight on Talking Books, at 8 p.m. (8:30
NT) on CBC Radio One.

8. IDEAS:

The Mind of Mozart tonight on Ideas: Paul Kennedy joins
Maestro Mario Bernardi and selected soloists from the CBC
Vancouver Orchestra for a musical dissection of the mind of
Mozart. That's tonight on Ideas at 9 (9:30 NT) on CBC Radio
One.

9. THE ARTS TODAY:

Novelist Nino Ricci re-imagines "the greatest story ever
told" - the life of Jesus - in his book, "Testament". Hear
him this evening on The Arts Today, right after the ten p.m.
news (10:30 NT) on CBC Radio One.

10. BETWEEN THE COVERS:

Today, the final reading from "The Last Crossing" by Guy
Vanderhaeghe, this year's Canada Reads winner, on Between
the Covers. Today, the story comes full circle. Back in
England, Charles Gaunt finally learns why Custis Straw has
been trying to contact him. That's on Between the
Covers, in Hour One of Richardson's Roundup, which begins at
2 (2:30 NT) and later tonight at 10:40 (11:10 NT) on CBC
Radio One.

(On Monday, you can hear both Jim Cuddy, the Blue Rodeo
musician who defended this book, and author Guy Vanderhaeghe
talking on CBC Radio's special wrap-up program. That's in
the third hour of Sounds Like Canada. Among other things,
they'll field listener mail - both bouquets and brickbats -
for Canada Reads.)
