TORONTO � The CBC is setting its eyes on the massive potential audience of the
United States and beyond.
The public broadcaster says it's shuffling its management team in a bid to
strengthen its focus on international co-productions and financing.
Arts and entertainment head Fred Fuchs is being renamed general manager of
production enterprises, while creative drama head Sally Catto will take over
Fuchs's old position.
As part of his new role, Fuchs will oversee CBC's new feature film initiative,
a collaboration with Telefilm Canada that will focus on developing movies for
theatrical release.
After an initial theatrical release, the films would be broadcast on CBC's
Sunday night movie slot. CBC-TV says it plans to develop up to four projects a
year.
One of the CBC's biggest successes in recent years has been "The Tudors," a
Canada-Ireland co-production.

TORONTO -- Former American Zoetrope Studios president Fred Fuchs has been
promoted at the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. to tap new international film and
TV financing for its homegrown product.
Fuchs, who joined the CBC in 2006 as executive director of arts and
entertainment programming, becomes general manager of production enterprises,
charged with securing more international financing for CBC shows, including
co-production financing and tax breaks.
Fuchs will also oversee CBC's new feature film unit, which will see the
broadcaster air at least four government-funded movies a year.
The CBC will help develop and produce the films, which will air Sunday nights
not long after their theatrical runs.
Fuch's promotion comes as the CBC is enjoying a ratings revival, but has seen
TV ad revenue shrink in a challenging economy.
That in turn has squeezed production budgets at the CBC.
Richard Stursberg, executive vp of English services at the CBC, argued CBC
shows are drawing bigger audiences at home and abroad, opening the way for
Fuchs to do more deals in the international TV market, especially as the
broadcaster shifts into multi-platform production.
Fuch's old post will be filled by Sally Catto, most recently creative head for
CBC Drama.
