Is this a sign that the War on Drugs is finally friggin' OVER?
More evidence: "... I'll bring you the good stuff. Smuggle it in, if
I have to."
... from the end of the episode.

I think not. "Speed Weed" apparently *is* a writer and "Executive Story
editor" on NCIS:LA, having written the recent "LD50" episode and the
"Random on Purpose" episode. As you will see, Mr. "Weed" here as
also edited for the "Eleventh Hour" and "New Amsterdam" series as well.

There are a couple of other writer/producer types with similar monikers
used by Bellisario at least..... "Frank Military" and "Roger Director." For all
I know, these could be real people with real names... Google them and there's
certainly enough published material on them.... All three have valid IMDB entries,
but none of them have "Bio" information on any pictures to speak of. Roger Director's
career goes all the way back to writing for "Hill Street Blues..."
I wonder if these identities are simply covers for people who wish to be "ghost crew"
members or something?
BTW, for you JAG fans, the "10th & final season" DVD is out this Tues (02/09)!

That's sort of my point. Taking the cover name "Speed Weed" would be
like taking the name "Bourbon McSixpack" during Prohibition.
And I see the WWE is running C.M.Punk's "straight edge" (no drugs or
booze) angle as a HEEL thing.
Sure, drug addicts are often annoying, useless people, but that's our
job to figure out, not our Government's. And the drug trade is one
thing that makes the criminals rich.

Then to answer your original question, I think the War on Drugs will be on going.
I haven't a clue as to why this "cover name" was chosen, assuming it is one.
Since it is "Speed Weed," it could be a "medical marijuana" thing (NJ here
just passed a law authoriziing it in very limited use)... I dunno. Bad taste in
that case, if you ask me, but I gather nobody would... ;-)

"Speed" is a term for methampthetamines, which, as any hippie will
assure you, kills.

It's referred to as a "penname", which it probably is. There's many reasons
a writer would have for using a penname. In this case it could be because
they work for a show on another network. It's sort of like moonlighting. For
example, if Conan O'Brien wrote a script for NCIS he might want to hide that
from NBC.

I'll try once again.
I KNOW it's a pen name. It's pretty obvious.
But to choose "SPEED WEED" as a pen name? Two knicknames for illegal
drugs in a row? That was my point.
If you look him up under his full name William Speed Weed, you might
have a different opinion.

Which I think we all see now as well. Perhaps, many thought, as did I (and
perhaps wrongly so), that you may have been attributing that selection to
the production/producers, and not the writer him/herself. It is entirely his/her
choice, and his/her responsibility for doing the consequences.
The IMDB indicates this particular penname has been active since at least 2006
(Ep. "Code Zero" on the series "Saved"). So it I doubt it could be the NCIS:LA
show. I have no idea why s/he chose it. It would certainly not be my choice.
As many drug addicts I had to deal with as an EMT/PIT... Trust me, I feel your pain.
That said, I don't think there's much either of us can do about it. All we can
do is keep "us and ours" as clean as we can, and not add more to the problem,
which, again, I *don't* think is going away anytime soon.

Maybe not anymore?

In my High School, the Athletic Director's name was Bill Weed. The kids
called him "Coach Weed".

Legitimate theater has the tradition of "George Splevin". But then we
also have (had) Georgina Splevin.
This moniker was used to "identify" someone who was holding two duties
that were extremely disparet.
For those of you who follow "real" motorsports, think Sir Jackie
Stewart and the name he first raced under. One of those other
classics. A. N. Other.

Hey, turnabout's fair play.
Here's another one. There's a urologist here in Austin by the name of
Richard Chop. And yes, he almost demands that you call him Dick.
