I started watching NCIS recently, mostly on USA Network. I enjoy the
character chemistry, it's fun to see Mark Harmon has outgrown his pretty
boy look, and yes, I am old enough to remember the Man From U.N.C.L.E.,
so Ducky comes as a fun surprise.

And then there's Abby. When I saw her, the reaction was deja vu.

It took me a while to figure out why she seemed so familiar.

It was in my head. I was imagining an 8-year old version. No, no, I'm
not a sicko -- or at least, not in that way -- so let me explain.

Maybe a decade ago, I bought an Ashbory bass.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashbory_bass

Since it uses rubberized strings, it has a bass guitar's range and sound
even though it's only a foot and a half long. Although it has lines on
the neck, it doesn't have actual frets. So it is tricky to play. To be
great on one, I think you'd have to start practicing very young.

And that's when I had the mental image of an 8-year old girl with this
thing and a couple HUGE amp stacks behind her, just blowing the place
away with sheer bass volume. It was a fun notion.

So when I saw NCIS, there was that kid, all grown up!

(Note: This is NOT a paid endorsement of the instrument. It's
spontaneous on my part.)

And while we're talking about her, from decades of scientific calculator
flogging, I always associate "Abs" with "Absolute Value." Has anybody
called her that, on the show?

Loved the scene when Kate asked Gibbs what Ducky looked like when he was
younger and Gibbs answered Illya Koryakin. Then Kate just gave this
quizzical look.

Yup, I liked that too.

As for "remember only?," it was my older sisters who really swooned over
Illya.

I figured at some point they'd do the "inside joke" thing with that. Of course,
quickly followed by an image of David (as Ilia) when using that "recognition"
software to make one look younger/older.

Of course, I recall David from U.N.C.L.E., but he did another film role for
which I remember him... as "Ashley Pit" in "The Great Escape." Similar
"Ilia" look at the time.

I'm a little younger than that but having 5 older siblings some of my
earliest recollections center around what my sisters and brothers were into.
I clearly remember watching a few UNCLE episodes from S3 and my sister was
nuts over McCallum. By virtue of her interest, I thought Kuryakin was the
greatest thing since sliced bread and would usually pick him when role
playing in the neighborhood games.

The other sisters couldn't wait to grow up to marry Kent McCord from
Adam-12. The boys, we wanted to be like Pete Malloy. All and all I was just
thrilled that whenever everyone else was getting rounded up at an
agonizingly early time for baths and bed I could sometimes fall thru the
cracks feigning sleep beside my Dad on the couch.

Because of McCallum on NCIS I recently marathoned all the old UNCLE
episodes. They haven't stood the test of time as well as I would have liked,
but the memories it brings back are all good. One black and white 18" Zenith
on a TV tray with three channels to choose from and the rabbit ears and
tinfoil only pulled in CBS and NBC clearly. That surrounded by six kids on
the Brady plan (3G,3B) that somehow managed to agree on what to watch and
then managed to shut up and watch it.

I'd like to see kids today "rough it" like that. Sort of like my parents
walking to school in deep snow. Oh wait, I did that too - frack I'm old!

Back on target - I get a little bit of a kick seeing McCallum on NCIS. He
looks pretty good considering the mileage.

No wonder nobody gets along anymore. Right from infancy they have their own
tv, room, entertainment,....& a car the minute they turn legal-for-driving.
No built-into-life learning compromise skills. :-)

Uphill both ways, no doubt. :-)

You can catch Adam-12 on the OTA channel RTN on weekdays.

Is it my feeble old mind playing tricks, but wasn't there a picture of
"Illya" in Ducky's house somewhere among all the things his mother had
collected? I only have a vague recollection of this and can't remember
the season or show, but it was an early introduction to Ducky's mother
and the dogs. Of course, I could just be imagining this . . .

I believe so. I mean, I believe there was such a picture.

Another nice thing about this role for McCallum is that he's one of the
good guys.

Other old actors who'd played TV heroes seem to go over to the Dark Side
in their later roles. I'm thinking Robert Vaughn, Larry Hagman ...

The last thing I saw Vaughn in was Hustle (from BBC, on AMC), in which
he played a "good" guy. A grifter, but with a decent heart. That
show was transmogrified into Leverage by TNT.

At one time I could have sworn I saw something about him doing a guest
apperance or maybe a cameo on NCIS.

I had several of the UNCLE toys, like the camera that popped out into
a pistol. Yes, my sister was crazy for Mr. Kuryakin.

I read that after UNCLE McCallum couldn't get roles much less arrested
because of being stereotyped as good guy Kuryakin - BUT Vaughn had the exact
opposite experience after UNCLE playing mostly bad guys and working
steadily.

Wasn't "Abby" the little girl on the pepsi commercials some years back?

I saw her on a rerun of CSI on Spike not too long ago. She played the girlfriend of

No, I forget the girls name, but it's not here. The Pepsi girl was in
Curly Sue tho, should make her easy to find. Seems like she was a guest in

The actress people are conflating with Pauley is "Missi Pyle", who
played the alien girl.

But I do find it interesting that Pauley, according to IMDB, has a
Masters degree in Criminology and an interest in Forensic Science. :-)

It's likely that they used some old publicity shots from UNCLE. And it's
likely that David had plenty of old pictures of himself.

Much like how Babylon 5 used actual wedding photos from Bruce Boxlitner &
Melissa Gilbert when she was re-cast as his wife in the show.

That was a Gibbs line in response to Tony. No offense taken. Ruby is
usually "snot dog" or "bonky" (she's always bumping one of us when we
get home).

I tune those out, litterally. I've seen one recently for a pretty
serious disorder that' I aquirred as a result of a medication I took
for several years. If I want money, I'll just hit them up directly.
Do you know how much the "class" gets in one of those? What's the
last name of the great blues gituarist who played a squre guitar?
First name Bo.

All the "structed settlement?" ads are just as bad. 30% or less.
