Is Leon Vance an imposter? When the "hooker" first looked at Director Vance,
she exclaimed, "Teak, is that you?" Then Ducky was going over who the db
was, he said that the deceased was name Tyler Keith Owens. Vance's wife said
he got a medical discharge for a detached retina. The corpse has had surgery
for a detached retina. Did Vance "trade places" with the dead body earlier
in his career to avoid something? The mysterious story begins.....

Excellent observations! Now I wish I had recorded it! It does seem like
there's a deeper connection between Vance and Owens than we were shown. Did
they ever show the face on the dead body? I wish Gibbs would just open that
dang envelope already. What do you want to bet that will be the end of
season cliffhanger? He'll break the seal and start unraveling that string
and BOOM.... tune in next year, folks!

They made a point early on of saying that the face was too bloated
from time in the water to be recognizable. His photo in the gym looked
like a young Yaphet Kotto.

I still don't know who he is.... I can say this was a much better episode in re:
Vance, and Rocky Carroll. And what is interesting is that Gibbs, is starting to melt
very slowly.... very slowly. I concur with his concern that Vance is going down the
same path as Jenny, because he realizes that in the end the agency itself will be
damaged. I think it's good that the agency has an "elder" like Gibbs that is there,
no matter whom is "director" at any given time.

So we got to see a bit of Vance's family. Interesting. I'm not sure if this is Rocky
Carroll or if it's Vance, but he even seems a little dry/impersonal with his own family.
Even his "I'm home.... is this the Vance residence?" cry lacked sparks! I dunno.
By the way, Mmmmmmmm. Frango Mints! Having lived in the Chigago area, I used
to enjoy those (bought them from Marshall Fields - one of the main Dept. Store chains
in the area).

I'm amazed that Gibbs hasn't opened the CIA file, and even more amazed that he
disclosed it to Vance. And even more amazed that Vance let him keep it ("Keep
me honest")... I wonder what's up with that. Either Vance knows what's in that
file and doesn't care if Gibbs knows, or Vance is truly being "altruistic" and sincerely
wants Gibbs to "Keep him honest" (or wants Gibbs to think that). I'm just not sure.

And I still want to know what was on that shredded page in Vance's personnel jacket.

Anyway, a really good episode. I even enjoyed the DiNozzo sub-plot this time. So
did everyone guess what the "circular object" was in DiNozzo's wallet? ;-PPPP
Hint: The "Expiration Date" :-O I also sense a little more Ziva/Tony teasing, especially
in the elevator conference with Ms. Cole. The door opens onto Ziva right when she says
to Tony: "Find the right person!" Ms. Cole also seems to bear a slight resemblence to
the "Frogette" in facial features if not ethnic origin. I imagine that's what attracted Tony.

I look forward to getting the Vance thing resolved. If he turns out to be good, then I'll
be the first to admit I was wrong. If Gibbs ends up respecting him, then so will I.

But he took some steps in that regard last night.

happens that will cascade into some type of intimate physical encounter
(not necessarily sex) that will set the stage for something that is
planned for next season.

I just rewatched it on CBS.com....I think that Joe Bank's call girl/wife is
"Leon's" sister. I also think that Vance and Owens were closer than just
friends. I suspect that Owens, Vance and the hooker are related somehow. She
made a comment about Owens being family and something about Vance abandoning
them.

Based on Gibb's statement about not recognizing that Vance was a Marine, as
his wife claimed he was makes me think that he and Owens traded places
somehow. The thought occurs to me that Vance is actually ex/current CIA and
had an identify change early in his career ( pre-marriage ). Why else would
the CIA have such a thick file on him.

They show went a long way to making Vance likeable. He has a nice family,
seems like a much different person at home. I even think that Gibbs kind of
likes the guy, but is leary of him. It is now apparent that he chews on a
toothpick when he is stressed. Bet the writers got that one from Dusty
Baker, the baseball manager. I really liked the way Vance's wife puts him
in his place when at home....:)

I didn't get the impression that Gibbs opened the envelope at the end of the
show, but eventually he will.

Did anyone catch the exchange between Ziva and the hooker ( what was her
name??? ) with Ziva showing er the picture of some guy on her cell phone.
They were obviously talking about someone that Ziva cares about. The hookers
mentioning that Ziva needed someone closer and Ziva's expression sure mademe
think that she and Tony will "hook up".

This was a great show,a nd sure peaked my interest in the rest of the
season.....

Did he just "tell" his wife that he graduated from Anappolis, or did he
actually do that? If he never actually served, then hemight not have ever
come across some of his classmates, although working for NCIS, it sure seems
that he would have had dealings with at least some of them over the years.
I'm still thinking CIA connections and a new identity, but who knows. I
think we will find out sooner or later. I hope it works out, because I kind
of like the interactions between Vance and Gibbs. I could see it developing
into a nice counter balancing between the two.

but there is that letter he shredded when he took over NCIS. I am
betting its his brother he switched with and maybe before he even went
to Annapolis. I see ethro finding out the truth but accepting Vance
once he knows the story. Otherwise vance's very nice family gets a
big hit and thats not Gibb's style.

His brother had surgery for a detached retina, but Vance said he finished
Annapolis but didn't go into service for that reason. I guess Vance could have
also had a detached retina, but this says maybe he didn't go to Annapolis at
all. Or possibly the other guy (his brother?) pretended to be Vance to give
Vance an out from going into the active military. The other guy's face was so
bloated as to be unrecognizable. Maybe he was Vance's identical twin and that's
not really his picture on Vance's wall.

They're making too big a deal about Vance's toothpick. It might play into
things some way.

Whatever, it's a curious situation. Who knows how it could turn out? NCIS
writers are devious and have a way of planting innocent-looking seeds for things
months and even years in advance. My guess is this will go on with possible
solutions that don't pan out. Then there will be a big cliffhanger at the end
of the season, and we'll get the summer to mull things over. And the more
everybody frets over it and makes ridiculously wrong guesses, the happier the
writers will be.

If Gibbs doesn't open that envelope soon, I plan to steal it and open it myself.
Of course I'll report here on the contents. ;)

I expect Gibbs to see picture of the two of them at Annapolis
graduation and the one NOT labeled Leon will have a toothpick. and
Gibb will realize but not sa anything

It could be they switched so Vance could get out to be recruited into
some black op.. Sort of Body Heat meets Without Remorse (Clancy novel
about recuiting Jack Clark)

You are sooooo right about how the writers planting something innocent, and
then bring it out later. Or they go back and see something in an older show
and pick that out to expound upon it. Either way, the writers have always
written tight scripts that hold your interest, and that is one of the
reasons that I really enjoy watching, and re-watching the shows. I have
found myself re-watching and old show and picking up on something that was a
clue to what would happen in a later episode.

If you find out whats in that envelope, let us know!

I was thinking the same thing, although they don't necessarily have to be
identical brothers, just look enough alike. (They could be cousins.) Vance
didn't have a detached retina but his brother did, so they switched places
for the medical exam. The shredded page could be a medical report indicating
the detached retina, so Vance got rid of it to avoid someone from checking.
As a draft dodger he would be a criminal and at the very least his career
would be ruined.

I remember the discussions at the time, and some people were quick enough to
catch some of the info on that page he shredded, but I'm wondering now if
anyone noticed if there was a picture of the real Vance on that page. If so,
that could be why he shredded it.
