Um, I just heard from what I consider to be a reliable source (my mother) some
of the saddest news in the world. Apparently, Ernie is going to die on Sesame
Street. It would seem to be cancer. This is not a practical joke, I swear.
The information may be wrong, but it is what I heard. I'm trying very hard not
to break down here in the Computing Center. I'm not letting myself think about
rubber duckies and "Hey, Bert!"
I thought I should let folks know, whether it's true or not.

lots of sad stuff removed...

Are you sure? Where did your mother hear this? I really don't think
that CTW would do this. I know that they have dealt with the subject of
death before (Mr.Hooper), but I seriously do not think they would "kill
off" a muppet. Not that I am doubting your mother, but I have a few
reasons.

1. Mr Hooper was a real person who really died. CTW had to work this
into the script. Ernie cannot die "in real life." Therefore they would
have to "kill him off" much the way they do with soap opera stars who
are no longer needed/wanted.
2. There are better ways of teaching kids about cancer than having a
muppet die from it. There are plenty of children who have cancer who
could appear on the show to explain it. When something happens to a
muppet, it is much the same as having something happen to a cartoon
character. The cat bonked in the head turns into an accordian and
wobbles away. In other words, it is less real.
3. Not less than one year after Jim Henson's death, they will not want
to have one of his characters die. It is bad enough that so many people
insist that Kermit is dead. To lose Kermit and Ernie would be too
traumatic for anyone.

just my $.02, well, maybe $.03

Please, if anyone has any definate info. on this, please post it soon,
before I worry myself sick over it. Thanks

[personal reaction deleted]

This rumor is completely untrue.

I just spoke with the folks at the Children's Television Workshop. They
say they have not heard of this at all and Ernie will, "Live forever."

They have asked the rumor be stopped since it is UNTRUE. I don't know
your mother's source, but it is WRONG

(*Phew* sure scared me for a minute there though)

This stuff has nothing to do with where I work. Don't blame them for my
opinions.

Actually, I am really impressed by this since CTW didn't *have* to
work it into the script. They could have gone one of the traditional
condescending routes: he left for a long trip, he relocated to another
block, etc. Instead, they had the courage to meet the subject head on
and show kids in a healthy way that death is a normal part of our
lives. The only other show I can think of which has done this is
Barney Miller when one of the detectives died in real life (his name
escapes me) and they mourned him in real way. This is another reason
why I think Sesame Street (& CTW) is one of the classiest operations
around.
Peace,

Yep. The Barney Miller character was Nick Yemana, played by Jack Soo (my all-
time favorite Barney Miller character, I really hated to see him go). There
was also a "Cheers" episode that focused on the coach, Ernie Pantuse.

Not to digress from whatever this thread was originally about, but if
you really want sadness...

My roomate and I came up with a list of silly newsgroups, and for the
past week or so I have been doing a poll of the groups on the list.
Guess which group is number 1 at the present time? It is...

alt.sex.bestiality.muppets

Sorry, but I had to break the news. Maybe when I re-post the thing, you
can vote for other newsgroups and hope to drag down the percentage.

BCN y'all.
