That's such a good explanation that I'm not sure if it's fake or not
lol.

To be fair, MTV does still air music videos. They just put them on
during the small hours of the night when nobody watches them. Nobody
in their right mind is going to stay up until 3 AM just to see a music
video when odds are they have an Internet-ready device less than 5
feet away from them.

If the stuff on now didn't get good ratings they'd pull it. So to me
it's not so much that no one is buying music like they used to, but as
they explained themselves, they get better ratings when they have full
shows as opposed to a video that lasts 3 minutes

Oh sure, blame the audience for your descent into suck. Was that Lars
Ulrich's brother?

there's a great big pile of mtv channels and most of them are music
videos 24 hours a day - there's like what? - 12 or more of them? mtv
dance, mtv classic, mtv base, mtv rocks, the list goes on.
why watch the 1 mtv channel which isn't music based and then pretend mtv
doesn't show music videos anymore?

There's the reason. As much as people may remember MTV as it was and hold out hope it'll return to those days, there's no point, nor profit, in waiting for a video to come on when you can have it pulled up within 5 seconds. There's really no reason for MTV to show videos with the internet around - it's just not smart business.

Bingo. The televised video block is obsolete in 2013. MTV in its original format wouldn't be able to gain any audience past a very small nostalgic niche, and with the internet (and thus any video one wants) rapidly becoming more available to the average person every day, that niche audience is gonna keep shrinking.

And that video was annoying as hell.

MTV as a brand name still has value, but as stated earlier (and better) there's no reason to wait on a video when you can get it within seconds on youtube. Plus it's cheaper to produce shows themselves than to pay record companies for use of their videos.

Besides youtube, music distribution has changed in the last decade. It used to be that the majors were trying to sell albums/CDs, but these days they are happy to sell songs via digital media. With that shift in paradigm, there is no need to invest money in music videos and the the, for lack of a better term, payola to get the video played on MTV.

Radio is dying also. We went from 3 rock stations to one rock station that is talk radio for 8 hours a day. Rap station, all talk. Good riddance, radio has sucked ever since computers decide what we listen to and not the DJs themselves.

Thing is MTV probably shows more videos now than it did back in the day.

It's just the videos aren't on the main channel and are instead on the spin off channels.

In America they have this channel called MTVU that only shows videos, all day that shows some good music (in between some awful shit granted) they also have MTV Hits or whatever its called that caters to a more mainstream audience and they have a few genre specific channels.

Growing up in the UK our version of MTV would show music videos all day then in the late afternoon and evening we would get shows that played music videos like MTV Select (which was eventually cancelled and replaced by the American show TRL on a month or two delay to compensate for the different release windows for music at the time over here) then they'd show videos again, then from like 8 or 9 at night we'd get programs like Jackass, Celebrity Deathmatch and Dancefloor chart. Now instead of having the shows relegated to the night and the music in the day they've split it to a channel showing shows all the time and multiple channels showing music all day and night, much better system imho.

And officially the "M" in MTV doesn't stand for music anymore, they changed the name to just "MTV" a few years ago. KFC doesn't stand for Kentucky Fried Chicken anymore either and WWE doesn't stand for World Wrestling Entertainment either.

Music isn't as big a deal as it was, if it was, they would at least have music related programming. With youtube though and smartphones, and even Vine, people are watching the shorter videos now, but television is a different beast and on the way out I think, it's pretty obvious how little they care anymore, with the stuff they just slap together.

Just look at the new MTV logo for proof of that, they just cropped the words "music television" and it's like they're saying "here-whatever"

They just don't care.

If all that were true, then radio stations that only play music would have gone the way of the dodo over 10 years ago, as would all of MTV's satellite stations that still show videos and music-related programming. The primary reason MTV doesn't show videos anymore is that cable TV has become homogenized. The History Channel is just History, American Movie Classics is just AMC, The Sci-Fi Channel is just Syfy, and the list goes on. The niche channels of old have been converted to generic, cookie cutter, lowest common denominator TBS clones because those are more profitable.

But the teenage girls and middle age housewives that make up 75% of MTV's audience would rather watch crap like "Teen Mom" and "Awkward".

But really most cable channels have succumb to "Channel Rot". Look at The Learning Channel, what was the last thing they aired that was educational? Or AMC,which use to stand for American Movie Classics and now seems to stand for "Add More Commercials". It is the only channel I have seen take a film that is 1 hour 20 minutes uncut. Then edit it and add enough commercials it airs in a 3 hour block.

Reality TV and channel rot are just two of the main reasons I gave up on TV back in 2007.

I became disillusioned with MTV when one of their former execs said that they started making shows because the novelty played music videos all day was going to wear off soon. That pissed me off because the novelty of playing everything but, music on MTV was wearing thin with me at the time. Then I flipped out when they classified playing nothing but videos as suspended programming after 9/11. The coup de gras of my MTV rage happened when they turned 30 and didn't acknowledge it of their own network. Oh no, we can't tell the kids that this channel has been around for longer than five or ten years.

I'm g;ad I listen to R&B because I don't want Youtube as my exclusive source for music videos.
