At 8:00am EST this morning: 245 people! (come on, 5 more, will ya?!)

First, a big thanks to Jacob Weinstein, as well as others who commented
on the petition and helped me fix the errors and stuff. Jacob provided
several several suggestions (as well as some rewrites :), but it sounds
much better now. Also, I use a spell checker, so no more complaining
about spelling! (If you want to yell at someone about spelling,
yell at Stephan Ratliff!)

Secondly a big thanks to everyone who has their name on this list.
I really really hope this helps convince CC that they made a mistake.

Now, I am not adding anyone else after 3:00pm EST TODAY (11/18).
I want to get this in the mail tomorrow, and thus, I want to
print it out here at work on the nice laser printers :). I
have the envelopes, as well as the address. I also have stamps :).

For those of you who miss this deadline, I am sorry that you didn't
make it, but I did give you sufficient time. I do have to put a
limit to how long I ran the petition. If you still wish to get
a message to CC, I still would suggest that you mail or email them,
and please, take a non-hostile approach (look at the petition text
below to get an idea for what I mean).

If I do get any responce, I will definitely let everyone on (r)atm
know. (One of the reasons I want to get this in by Saturday's mail
is that it has a chance to reach CC by Turkey Day. Maybe there'll
be something on the air about that....hmm).

Again, thank you for your participation!

Vice President Vinnie Favale, General Programming
c/o Comedy Central
1775 Broadway
New York, NY 10019

November 18, 1994

Dear Mr. Favale,

My name is Michael K. Neylon, a graduate student at the
University of Michigan. I am also a loyal Mystery Science
Theater 3000 fan.

I maintain Web Site Number 9, one of several pages
dedicated to MST3K on the World Wide Web, as well as
frequently posting on the two USENET news groups,
rec.arts.tv.mst3k and alt.tv.mst3k. Not only do I
participate in the 'MiSTing' of bad fan fiction on the
Internet along with several others, but I am also the
maintainer of a mailing list for this group.

However, I do not approach you as an individual, but as
a representative of a large group of over 250 people who
participate in similar activities and are all fans of MST3K,
as well as the millions of other MST3K fans. Our group,
whose names and email addresses can be found in the
following letter and were collected over the 7 day period
from November 11 to November 18, 1994, strongly urges Comedy
Central to reconsider its new schedule. We strongly feel
that the current schedule does not have everyone's best
interests at heart, and can be revised to make watching
MST3K a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

We thank you and Comedy Central for supporting of such
a great show, and hope that you continue to do the same in
the future.

Sincerely,

Michael K. Neylon

[page break...]

We, the undersigned fans of Mystery Science Theater
3000, are disappointed at the new schedule. We strongly
urge you to reconsider the new schedule. At the least, we
urge you to replace the old midnight showing of MST3K, or at
some other late night time.

During your appearances on Comedy Central during the
past two weeks, you explained some reasons for the new
schedule. We respect these reasons, but would like to
explain why we disagree with them.

First, you noted that the ratings for the old midnight
MST3K did not have very high ratings. However, we would
like to point out that a significant fraction of MST3K fans
are college students -- a group that does not generally show
up in the ratings. Speaking from personal experience, we
know that, until the new schedule took effect, groups of
friends would gather in college dorm rooms throughout the
country to watch the midnight showing every weeknight. That
this high viewership did not translate into high ratings
seems to be a quirk of the ratings system.

You also noted that the new schedule was intended to
benefit viewers whose access to Comedy Central was split
with another station. We appreciate the good intentions
behind this change, but our experience indicates that it has
not benefited many viewers. Most of us have seen our MST3K
viewing time go from 12 hr/week to 4 or 6 hr/week.
Furthermore, the new schedule only provides 3 different
episodes of MST3K a week, compared to the 5 different ones
offered under previous schedule .

We are very appreciative of what Comedy Central has
done with MST3K and its fans, including removing the
station's logo from the screen, avoiding voice-overs during
the credits, running the annual "Turkey Day" marathon,
creating the Mystery Science Theater Hour, presenting the
College Tours, and, in general, providing 24 hours a week of
MST3K under the old schedule, an amount of time that most
other stations, either broadcast or cable, would never think
of donating to a single show. We also appreciate your
continued support of Best Brains, Inc., as well as
maintaining the rights to such a large number of movies, the
airing of shows with awkward formats (Seasons 2 & 3), as
well as the attempts to show Season 1 episodes. Those of us
who are affected by the split stations appreciate the
morning showings of MST3K that you run as well. Finally, we
wish to thank you for taking the airtime on November 4 and
11 to discuss viewer concerns with us.

However, we are disappointed at the new schedule, for
it seems to indicate that Comedy Central is turning its back
on one of its premier shows. We strongly urge you to
reconsider the new schedule. It seems that the change has
not fully considered all the facts about the viewing
audience, and with some additional research and viewer
response, a schedule that fits both our wants and your
limitations can be found. We are thankful for the support
that Comedy Central has shown in the past years, and we hope
that you continue to support Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
