Does anybody know why Tom Servo's head is cylindrical rather than
spherical in the "Ring of Terror" rerun? I kinda liked the
cylindrical head: paired with that beak of his, it really sets
off the incongruity of that big voice inside that little robot
frame. Also, it made Tom Servo's silhouette look even funnier
than usual, especially when they were all bobbing up and down
shouting "Ford Beebe! Beebe! Ford Beebe!" One last thing: why
does Tom Servo sometimes wear a fez during the between-the-
scenes skits but never during the movie? Is the fez a tribute
to Matt Groening's Akbar and Jeff?

He had the new head for a few weeks. I think it was a bad
haircut. At one point he complained: "It makes me look like Bart
Simpson!"

I think the fez is just Tom's idea of "casual wear."

My guess is that someone at Best Brains accidentally dropped Tom Servo
and broke his globe. Perhaps they were unable to procure a replacement,
so they used a glass or some other cylindrical object, and made up the
"haircut" idea while they searched for a replacement part.

All speculation of course.

Come on, now--how many times have they "cooked" Servo's head?
It seems like about every eighth episode, he thinks too hard
and...FOOM! Fire and smoke come out of his head, cooking the
plastic globe. They must have a bazillion of those gumball
machines around.

Also, they've shown Servo before with a cracked globe. Check
out the shot in the intro when they're all looking through the
hex-field screen and are seen from behind. Servo has a nice
three-pointed star crack in the back of his globe. This also
showed up in some episodes, but I can't recall which ones.

I would think it would be harder to find a glass or piece of
Lucite (it would have to be light, or the otherwise plastic Tommy
would be top-heavy and tip over!) to fit snugly in the rest of Servo's
head than to find a new globe.

Nice guess. Actually, "toolmaster" Jef Maynard keeps lots of extra
parts on hand in the prop room for Servo, such as globes, mouths and hands.
Unfortunately, he has been unable to locate another barrel (Tom's torso)
of the same size, so if that breaks, Servo would have to look different
on a permanent basis.
