I am a new to the show this past season, and like it a lot. But one
thing bothers me: How exactly does Monk afford a full-time assistant?
Is he independently wealthy? Government disability assitance?

Monk is paid by the Police Department or the client that he helps. I've
just been watching a re-run of the episode where Natalie is trying to
get Monk to ask the Captain for a pay raise so that she can also be
paid.
