I just saw the episode last night where Klinger gets married. There was a
scene in post op where a GI is holding a cat and won't let it go.

Fr. Mulcahy: He's not hurting the cat, he just won't let it go.
Hawkeye: My mother had the same problem with me at the induction center.

I had never noticed Hawkeye's reference to his mother before in that scene.
This was obviously an earlier episode (Henry & Trapper were in it). It
wasn't until much later in the series, in a scene with Winchester, where he
says that his mother died when he was a child.

Part of the fun of writing MASH-fanfic is dealing with subjects like
Hawkeye's Mom. My explanation, as posted in "...Bothered, and
Bewilderded" :

As told to Charles, Hawkeye lost his mother when he was young. As told
to Radar, Dan Pierce met a woman he liked, but Hawkeye was bitter. Since
Hawkeye was trying to bring a point home to Radar about accepting his
mom Edna's new beau, his story left out his eventual acceptance of his
new stepmother and her daughter by a previous marriage. Sometime in 51',
Hawkeye recieved the news of his stepmother's death. Moreover, his
still-underage stepsister went back to live with her father, a man who
neither liked nor approved of Dan. Hence, Hawkeye lost touch with her.

This is a chain-breaking address. If a fwd is sent that is not an
original work of fiction by yourself, or a close friend, etc., it will
be discarded. Any bad luck or disaster will then fall on the sender.
This is fair warning.

Actually, wasn't there a very early episode where Hawkeye is writing home to
his father and he says something like "love to mom" at the very end of the
letter?

In the episode where Hawkeye is suppose to be dead (The Late Captain Pierce), he
says something to the effect that his father is probably wandering around that
empty house thinking that his son is dead. If she's not dead, then I assume that
they must be divorced.
Just my two cents. (keep the change)

I'm thinking of an episode way before that one - all the way back to the first
season. I know there are a number of later references to the fact that
Hawkeye's father is alone, but I'm thinking back to first season.....

I remeber in one of the episodes in the 6th or 7th season where Radar is upset
because his mother has a boyfriend, he asks Hawkeye for advice and Hawkeye says
that his father was a widower and that he was in love with a librarian or
somthing and because Hawkeye didn't accept her, his father didn't get married
and is alone to this day. It was a cute scene because Radar then said that
maybe his mother and Hawkeye's father could get married if his mother's
boyfriend didn't work out.

Chill buddy, I have the answer you seek. The episode from season 1 is
Dear Dad...Again written by Larry Gelbart and Sheldon Keller, directed
by Jackie Cooper. It's the one with Capt. Casey and ends with the
Swinging Surgeons show. At the end Hawk ends his letter to dad with,
"kiss mom and sis." Yes it's true, he refered to his mother.

He's also referring to his sister, but, in a later episode, he tells someone he
is an only child.

Is it "Dear Dad Again"? Granted I can't remember which Dear Dad or Mail
Call title goes with which episode, but I thought this was the Christmas
"Dear Dad" which was (if I'm not wrong) "Dear Dad [One]".

He does say "kiss mom and sis" in Dear Dad Again but now that you
mention it he may refer to mom in the first Dear Dad as well. Will have
to check. He also referrs to his "parents" in the pilot.

Currently watching Mash on TV. I've attempting looking up references about his parents. Ho-Jon, their houseboy, was accepted to Hawkeye's old college. They received a letter of acceptance for Ho-Jon, stating they had to come up with $1000.00 tuition for him and money for travel and clothing. Trapper added and besides, what's Jon- ho going to do when he gets yo America?! Haweye says, that's no problem, he can stay with my parents!
Instantly, I was thinking, HUH! I thought his mother died when he was young?!
Not sure at what point, they killed her off...
She was referenced many times.
I'm just wondering, did they for get🙃

Just another example in a long list of inconsistencies in MASH time line. For example Potter was old man 1950 in a war for all seasons which covered the period between New years even 1950 to new years eve 1951. Potter did not arrive until Sept 1952.

The constant reference to Godzilla which was not created till 1954 a year AFTER the end of the war. The mentioning of the Blob (1958) radar's impersonation of John Wayne in McLintock(1963)

Let not forget Hawkeye's sister with her 10 magic fingers which knitted him a sweater. Not only was his mother dead, but we are also told he was an only child.

Blake's wife name changing from Mildred to Louise.

Hot lips father coming back to life.

No idea how this series won so many awards for writing.

When was Hot Lips's father dead? Was he known as Alvin or Howitzer in that
episode?

DO NOT even try and comprehend all the inconsistencies in the MASH story line. If you do you may end up with Klinger's Sec 8.

The continuity in the series is some of the worst ever of any TV show.

In earlier episode when Hotlips wanted to borrow some money, Frank asked if her dad did not leave her some money when he died and she mention that her mother drank it away. That half her pay goes to sobering her mom up and the other half bail. When she was sober she was a Klepto.

Howitzer Al was his nickname. Do not know when the writers gave him that nickname. Maybe after he came back to life.
