Hi, everyone!

Long-time lurker, long-time MASH fan, first time poster here.

Just saw the episode the other night where Scully comes back and asks Margaret
to "dress up" for him, and she has to borrow a frock from Klinger. Made me
wonder what kind of clothes the characters had in their footlockers besides
uniforms. I figure maybe Margaret hadn't packed anything but fatigues since
she was "regular Army", but what about the others? BJ is always seen in that
pink longjohn shirt...Hawkeye in his Hawaiin shirt.....yet in the "Hey, Look Me
Over" episode, Hawk appears at Kellye's tent in a tuxedo. Did he bring that
with him? I doubt there was a formal wear rental nearby, and any of Klinger's
outfits would be too small for Hawkeye. Or is this just one of those timeline
glitch things?

Also, as Charles is my favorite character, can anyone recall him wearing
anything outside of his Army issue clothes? I remember him in a shorty kimono
once, as his own clothes had been stolen, but that's about it.

Hawkeye's Dad sent him the tuxedo.

There is an ep where Charles is hunting (with Klinger as his "dog") in the
Abercrombie & Fich hunting attire.

That's all I can remember.

Jeez, I must be getting old....I've seen all the MASH episodes I don't know how
many times, and until someone mentioned it here, I'd forgotten about the red
laundry incident.

As for Margaret's black (and brown) sweaters, I wasn't sure if those were
Army-issue or not....they're still both very Earth-tone, and match her uniform
to a certain extent.

However, I did notice on tonight's episode, Charles had several silk shirts
packed in his suitcase. Don't know if he ever wore them anywhere else except
for while on R & R....

I can't speak for the American Army, but, in the Canada army (Which, untill
recently, used almost the exact uniform pattern they used in Korea...)
issues "Commando" sweaters, which have epaulets, and patches on the sleeves.
I highly doubt Margrets black sweaters were army issue, but the brown
sweaters are a possibility.

I've always believed that his hat was an army model. In the movie, Hawkeye
(Donald Sutherland) wears a similar hat. Somewhere I've heard that it's a
jungle combat-hat that in reality weren't used in Korea but in Vietnam.
Does anybody know?

Yep, at least back in the 80's. The US Army had an issue pull-over
wool sweater in olive drab. I had a Royal Navy issue pull-over in navy blue
(black to you civvies! ;) ) that I got away with wearing, but I was a
submarine sailor and back then we could pretty much do what we pleased,
regulations be damned; dunno if the US Navy actually issued 'em or not. The
warmest thing they ever gave us was those goofy orange survival suits....

Robert

The U.S. Army does indeed issue a black commando sweater,or at least they
did in '86

Yes - Henry's hat is an ordinary fishing hat - the military hat is
called a "boonie" hat (that's the common slang term) and has a _much_ wider
brim; they really don't look at all alike.
(Just looked at the label on mine. It's proper nomenclature is "Hat, Jungle
Type II" )

Actualy, it wasn't the colour, more so the fact that the sweater was not a
Commando sweater... so chances are it wasn't issued. I can't recall if the
olive sweaters were commando style or not.

Didn't Hawkeye wear a boonie in some of the early episodes? And when did the
boonie make its first appearance in US Army?
Isn't there also something called a "ranger-hat", looking more like Henry's
hat but in reality maybe not used before the 1960s?

BTW, is the "scout-hat" occasionally worn by Potter an authentic American
cavalry-hat frpm WW1?

Surely tight black sweaters would be issued to nursing staff to boost
morale?
