I just saw the episode in which Hawkeye sent out telegrams to all of B.J.'s
friends to find out what B.J. stands for.
So, my question is this: Do we ever find out what B.J. stands for?
Just remember: I am a new M*A*S*H fan, so have mercy on my soul and ignorance.

They never said what BJ stands for. It is assumed that BJ is his name, and

His parents Bea and Jay, yeah, that's what B.J. told Hawkeye.

OK,...but only because you asked.

"wrong" is spelled with a w.
episode has an 'e' at the beginning.
"father's" does not begin with a 'd'.
The contraction for "I am" has an apostrophe in the middle.

;-) sory, just hahd too due it. No hard feelings, this is supposed to be
recreational typing. I only commented because my own typing is rated in

I remember reading someplace that the army didn't accept initials as a name,
and those cases had to pick something for their name to stand for (I vaguely
remember Johnny Cash had to do this, as his name was really J.C. I could be
wrong.) Anyone with military experience or knowledge want to clarify?

Yeah, but Hawkeye was bugging him about his initials at the time. I don't
think he was serious, he was just saying it to get Hawk off his back.
Besides, if he were serious, wouldn't it be B and J Hunnicutt, not Bea and
Jay?

When he was just trying to get Hawkeye off his back, he said, "Anything
you want."

His parents were named Bea and Jay...so they named their kid B.J....not real
creative, I mean, if they were that desperate for a name, they could have
picked Angus or something (a name that I, personally, love) ... but let's
remember, it's fiction...a story...and that's just something that some
writer came up with after (probably) some fan wrote in and asked what B.J.
stood for...

I think, that the origin of that name is clear:
B stands for Bill - William
J stands for Jurgensen
William Jurgenses is the director of the photographie and author of some
episodes

But why the name of the man was BJ - nobody knows....\

Sorry, I`ve made some mistakes in English

The correct text is:

What do the initials B.J. stand for ?
There are 2 answers to this: In the series B.J. said he was named after his
mother and father Bea and Jay Hunnicut. Larry Gelbart said the character
was named after William 'Bill' Jurgenson the director of photography on the
series.

You really know your MASH!! Your e-mail line shows you're from Russia.
Do you get MASH there? If so, what do Russians think of it?

Indeed -- this is a small world!! :-)

MASH is currently running for the second time in Russia on a small Moscow
channel (REN-TV) 4 episodes every weekend. Maybe it`s runnig somwhere else
(e.g. in St-Peterburg or in Kiev (Ukrain)), but not on the big national
channel, so not more than 15.000.000 russians (of 160.000.000) can watch
MASH. Today episodes were "Major Trooper" and "Your Hit Parade". The first
time MASH was shown was in 97-98.
It`s translated into russian, no subtitles - actors speak russian so it`s
impossible to hear real voices of the actors and exact original english
text.
It is not polpular here, knowbody knows it here (but I do).

The movie MASH was in prime-time on the main national channel but also had
no success and was forgotten very soon.
Of course no AfterMASH and Trapper John MD.

So it`s impossible to say that MASH is loved in Russia :-(.

The book of Richard Hooker was never translated into russian so I had to
buy it in Chicago and read in English (and it was an exploit for me - I
learned french at school)

BTW can anyone show me the URL were I can find the text of others MASH
books, especially MASH GOES TO MOSCOW

I think that to understand MASH you have to know something about America
about that style of life. For example, nowbody knows what Big Mac is, in
"advanced" cities (Moscow, Leningrad) everybody thinks it`s a hamburger.
And in fact it`s Gen. McArthur. Knowbody knows who is Odry Hepbern (sorry
for spelling if it is not correct) and what is it Potter`s favorit
"Sentimental Jorney" ( I know it because Ringo Starr made an album with it)
that are mentioned in today`s "Major Trooper" and "Your Hit Parade".Nobody
understand why Milton Fridman became Sidney. And that`s why it`s very
difficult for not educated russian to understand MASH
and then to love it. And MASH itself, I know that it is Mobile Army
Surgical Hospital, but the ordinary russian do not understand it, for him
"MASH" is a kind of magic word.

The translation of MASH into russian is difficult. For example "Hot Lips"
would be "Goryachie Goobki" in russian, and it`s to big to use it as a
nick-name (too many letters, impossible to pronounce it fast), so Margaret
has no nick-name in russian MASH :-). And Hawkeye is simply
"Yasterb"="Hawk" for the same reason. And Henry`s "Abissinya"="I`ll be
seeyng you", how you can translate it into russian??? But famouse Trapper`s
"figure A is attracted to figure B........because figure B has such a
greate figure" is possible in russian because the word "figure" in russian
has two meanings too.

The stange thing is that MASH runs here not in it`s original order, e.g.
after episode #118 (according to the official episode guide) runs episode
#128 and after that #119.

The TV-shows that are loved in Russia are (I hate them all, except Get
Smart):
Santa-Barbara
Beverly hills 90210
Alf
Invaders
3rd rock from the sun
The murder she wrote
Babylon 5
Helene et les garcons (France)
and others

>
> Indeed -- this is a small world!! :-)
>

You can think that I must hate MASH because the USSR army helped North, not
at all.
We (russians) do not think about that war as a war - USSR provided
technical and financial help, but no russians were killed, it wasn`t a WAR
for us. It is the war in Afganistan (1979-1989) that is russian Korea and
russian Viet-Nam.

So, once again: nobody knows and loves MASH in Russia but I really DO!

Yes, I suppose it would lose a lot in translation...I was a nanny a few
years ago for a 10 year old girl, and we were watching MASH and she thought
the same thing about Big Mac -- that it was a sandwich.

But the way I see it, you're probably not the ONLY one in Russia who likes
MASH, or a) they wouldn't show it, and b) it wouldn't still be on the
air...they'd yank it for Alf re-runs or something. So keep looking -- there
have to be more fans out there somewhere :)

ALL of the movies & TV shows are ALWAYS translated the same way (no

subtitles - actors speak russian so it`s impossible to hear real voices of
the actors and exact original text.) in Russia.
It`s russian tradition and nobody will watch the film if isn`t translated
and have only subtitles.

>But the way I see it, you're probably not the ONLY one in Russia who likes
>MASH,

I`m not the only one, but we are rare.

I think it`s because of finance, to buy MASH is chipper then to buy
something more fresh and contemporary

> they'd yank it for Alf re-runs or something.

Alf is running for the 3rd time here

I promiss you, I will try

BTW, do you know, that Igor Strawinsky is russian by his ethnic origin?
(not Jeff Maxwell of course, but Igor)
