What's the significance of Decatur on the camp's directional post?

Just wondering . . .

I have been wondering this for a long time also. I also want to know
which state it is referring to and which character is the one who
removes it in the finale movie. I have figured it to be in one of two
states but would like to hear other opinions on where it is.

Right here in good ol' Georgia, me thinks.

Or it could be here in Alabama, too.

But I bet it's the one in Illinois.

Indeed there is. About an hour east of Springfield.

How were the signs on the post chosen...was it random? I'm fairly sure one of
them said "Moscow" on it -- sort of an odd thing to see on a U.S. military post
in the early fifties considering McCarthy was riding high around that time.

To all who are wondering,

Decatur (Illinois) is where Col. Blake is from. You will often see him
wearing a sweatshirt with the letter "I" in referenece to the University of
Illinois.

My theory is that it is left open to interpretation. It could be on of the
bigger Decaturs that the previous postings to this thread mention. It could be
a small town somewhere that maybe one of the crew was from-there's a really,
really small town by my cousin in Mass which is, you guessed it, Decatur.

To all who still wonder,

Col. Blake was from Decatur, IL...you may often see him wearinf a sweatshirt
withthe letter "I" on the front. The "I" refers to University of Illinois
(Champaign/Urbana), which is about 1.5-2hrs away from decatur.

Col. Blake is from Bloomington, Illinois. But I guess the connection with
Decatur because of the University of Illinois is possible.
I ran a web search on Decatur, and there are Decatur's located all over the
country, cities and counties. Unless Larry G can say any different, I'd say
Decatur could be representing anything or anybody.

Come to think of it, there is also a Decatur in East Texas

Just for the record....the "University of Illinois" is in Champaign, Il,
and "Illinois State University" is in Bloomington, Il (where Henry
claimed he was from).

I can't really think of anything that's in Decatur, Il.......well.....I
take that back... I stopped at a McDonalds there, once.

He was not. Henry stated several times in dialog onscreen that he was from
Bloomington, Illinois. This was a side effect of that McLean Stevenson was
from Bloomington, Illinois.

Blake went to U. of Illinois (as witnessed by his sweater and story about
taping Tank's uninjured ankle). Lorraine went to Illinois Normal, which
(I'm fairly sure) is now Illinois State.
