Actor James Gregory Dies; Starred on TV's 'Barney Miller'

SEDONA, Arizona (AP) -- Character actor James Gregory, who played Inspector
Lugar for eight seasons on television's "Barney Miller,'' died Monday of an
undisclosed illness. He was 90.

In the late 1970s and early '80s, Gregory was well known for his role as
Inspector Lugar during eight seasons on the "Barney Miller'' series,
starring
Hal Linden.

Gregory also appeared in 25 Broadway shows, including a stint as Biff in
"Death
of a Salesman.''

Among the actor's 30 film credits were the Elvis Presley vehicle "Clambake''
in
1967 and the 1965 western "The Sons of Katie Elder'' with John Wayne and
Dean
Martin.

In 1962, Gregory played Senator John Iselin in the acclaimed John
Frankenheimer
film "The Manchurian Candidate.''

He'll be missed. Inspector Luger was a great character -- my favorite
parts of the show were his scenes. He was also good in Star Trek's
"Dagger of the Mind" and in MASH as "Iron Guts Kelly."

Will

I'm very sorry to hear that. I was watching him just the other day on Hawaii
Five-0. He always added a lot to any project he appeared in.

Did he die like "Iron Guts"? (Sorry, couldn't resist).

Awww, so long "Iron Guts Kelly." Inspector Luger from BARNEY MILLER was one of
my paternal grandfather's fave characters. Personally, i adored his voice and
wanted to have pipes like his. I'm going to take it very hard when the next
member of Monty Python dies, as well as M*A*S*H.

God bless him, he lived to the ripe old age of 90! Sedona is an absolutely
beautiful place and I'm sure he enjoyed the surroundings there very much in his
last years. He must have been around 70 when he was doing Barney Miller.

Sincerely,
Becca

And don't forget his classic line in Beneath The Planet Of The
Apes........"The only good human is a dead human!"
He had an unmistakeable voice.

One of my all-time favorite Barney Miller quotes came from Inspector Luger.
He'd wanted to hold some sort of a party at the 12th precint, but events
kept getting in the way that day. At the end of the episode, Inspector
Lugar walks in, wiping his hands, and says, "The ice cream melted in my car.
You oughta smell the trunk, Barney -- smells like it's been full of babies!"

Yes, Sedona is gorgeous, even though it's being heavily developed, like most
of Arizona. How sad. The first time i visited it was in 1994, and it now
seems like a tourist trap. Still, the beautiful red mountains are there.
