I recently saw the 1951 Gary Cooper movie "High Noon" for the
umpteenth time, and I finally realised that a young Harry Morgan
was in it,playing a cowardly deputy who runs out on Cooper.I am
not sure why I missed this before. In the credits however,it gives
his name as "Henry Morgan".

According to an interview with Morgan, his real name is Henry Morgan and
he had to change it to Harry as a stage name, because of another actor
named Henry Morgan (SAG rules apparently don't allow multiple actors with
the same name.) Some of Morgan's earlier roles list him as Henry "Harry"
Morgan ... or is it Harry "Henry" Morgan? I can't remember right now,
it's 5:45 am ;)
Morgan also has some excellent scenes in "The Oxbow Incident" and
"Inherit the Wind".

Posting at 5:45 am, if you aren't bright eyed and bushy-tailed, is not
recomneded:

Neither Henry Morgan (Radio, TV personality) or Harry Morgan (MASH) were born
"Morgan" they were respectively born Henry and Harry, but their father's last
name was not Morgan. The following information can be found at the Internet
Movie Database.

Henry Morgan (I)
Radio and TV personality possessed of excruciatingly sarcastic wit.

For his Film and TV work see:
<http://us.imdb.com/Name?Morgan,+Henry+(I)>

Birth name: Henry Lerner Von Ost Jr.
Born: 31 March 1915, New York, New York
Died: 9 May 1994, New York, New York. (lung cancer)

Not to be confused with the film actor Harry Morgan, who in his earlier days
had used the pseudonym "Henry Morgan." (But radio's Henry having used that
moniker first, filmdom's Henry renamed himself Harry.)

------
Harry Morgan [of M*A*S*H]
Radio, TV and Film actor

For his Film and TV work see:

Birth name: Harry Bratsburg
Born: 10 April 1915, Detroit, Michigan

Neither is posting AND e-mailing all your posts, but I'm a nice person
and will let it slide.

Then I can only conclude that what Harry Morgan meant in his interview
is that he could not use the name "Henry Morgan" because it was already
taken, so he used his real name, "Harry".
This may not be the case, though, because I notice that he was credited
as Henry Morgan up until the mid-1950s, a good 10 years after his career
in movies began. Since this roughly coincides with the time when Henry
Morgan of radio fame began *his* movie career, I'm inclined to believe
that Henry, being actually named Henry, won out in this battle of the
first names. That's rather unfortunate, to take away an actor's name
after he's used it for so long.
