The reason for this somewhat odd request? I work at a K-12 school and
a middle school teacher has a successful knitting club. The problem?
Pretty much only girls ever sign up. So, she has begun a bit of a
'campaign' at school to recruit boys into the club. Part of that is
finding celebrities and iconic characters that knit.
Now, I know they're in the series, there was one point Hawkeye's
insulting Burns in the swamp and knitting. I even re-winded the DVD a
few times to take note of Alan Alda's technique. (I'm a craft nerd,
we're even worse than regular nerds I think) I also know their is a
scene where someone insults Hawk an BJ saying "If you boys are done
with your knitting (blah blah insult) But with 11 some seasons to go
on, and only a vague notion. Well, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help on this somewhat quixotic quest,
Paula

That quote is from "The Grim Reaper", but I don't think Hawkeye was
knitting, he was just making a ball of string or wool.
I don't remember much knitting, but they did darn their socks and fiddle
with their martini olives a lot.

Hmm, I'll check that out. It might be enough for a screen cap or
something for class.

I am not so sure about knitting on MASH, and I think in the scene you are
thinking of, Hawkeye is just rolling (if that is the proper term) a ball of
yarn, "do you want it fast, or do you want it round", but presumably it is
for kinitting. I did, howvever, find the following sites:
http://www.menwhoknit.com/community/: There is a video available on it to
buy called "Real Men Knit," and in the promotional material for it, it
states that knitting was invented by men, and has interviews with Kaffe
Fassett, Brandon Mably, and Rick Mondragon. It also says it states that
there are stories (and perhaps interviews, but this is not specified) of
"real men" who sew.
http://menknit.net/main.html: Has a history of knitting, and a gallery of
pictures of men knitting (unfiortunately, no "celebrities" like football
players.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/02/04/national/main671644.shtml: A story
from cbs news about how more men are taking up knitting.
http://knitting.about.com/od/patternsformen/Free_Knitting_Patterns_Knitting_Patterns_for_Men.htm:
Free patterns for men who knit.
http://www.amazon.com/Knit-Dogs-Love-Them-Great-Looking/dp/1579908748: Book
on amazon of patterns for men, seems to have fairly favorable user reviews.
http://www.ksdk.com/news/cover_story/cover_article.aspx?storyid=111798:
Another news story about how more men are taking up quiltuing.
There are lots of other hits as well, I just used the word "men" and
"knitting" on a google search. This message is rather long, and most of it
has very little to do with MASH, but I am somwhat sympathetic to you cause.
I don't knit (in jr. high art class I may have tried either macrame or
crochet, but I really don't remember), but I do sew.

Seriously thanks for all the links. I'm sure she'll love them. I do
know there's a scene SOMEWHERE of Alan Alda knitting... I remember
because I stopped and jumped up and went, "OMG he's using the European
style! (A way to hold the needles and control yarn tension, Americans
style usees the right hand, 'European; style uses the left.
So, back to the trenches for me...not that I mind really. ::snicker::
Any excuse to watch good TV.

Nothing to do with MASH knitting, but you might be interested in this

The episode is on Hallmark Channel now in my area. It's the one with
the crossword puzzle, and Klinger is eating a jeep. I don't know the
episode title or the season; but it's one before Frank leaves the unit.
This episode also includes one of my favorite MASH scenes... where
Hawkeye mimics a Southerner saying "bedbuhhhg." :)

That should totally be enough to narrow it down! Thanks! Wooot!
