Before you buy.
From that description, I'd say you're closer to being right. Hawkeye
and Margaret fought a lot in the first 5 or 6 seasons, mostly while
Frank was still in Korea. They became closer in a few episodes, most
notably in "Comrades In Arms" when they kissed in an abandoned hut and
in the final episode when they kiss again. The pair kissed several
times, but those two were both mutual (Hawkeye instigated the others).
Tell your boss to watch those two episodes again if he gets a
chance...he'll probably rethink his position.

Do not forget, that Hawkeye in one of the first seasons, during christmas
time did kiss Hotlips very warmly. Burns yelled "big animal" after Hawkeye
and Hotlips ... who had lost her breath, did aggree .. but not in the harch
way as Burns ..
In Goodbye, Farewell and Amen, Hotlips and Hawkeye did also kiss very
warmly, so in my opinion they were very much in love and attrachted by
eachother

That wasn't warmly. That was hotly.

They did more than kiss in that episode -- it was obvious from the aftermath
that they'd had sex and Hawkeye regretted it whereas Margaret briefly thought
she'd have a future with him. As for how Hawkeye and Margaret felt about each
other, I think "Comrades in Arms-Part 2" summed it up for their future and
part of their past. They were attracted to each other in a semi- sexual way,
weren't compatible at all as lovers but then found a common ground as
affectionate friends.
I do think that Alda and Swit had wonderful chemistry in every sense of the
word, so I loved "Comrades in Arms" as a little sexual resolution of that
attraction.

As I recall, she takes a long look at Hawkeye after saying that and continues,
"Well, maybe 5 percent." It's been a while since I saw that episode, so I
can't remember completely whether I thought she was teasing him or not about
demoting his percentage in her ideal man.

Margaret: Next time, I won't bother with him until he meets the minimum
requirements!"
Hawkeye: And what are they?
Margaret: 20% my father, 10% Scully (the guy she just ditched), [looks at
him], about 10% of you.
Hawkeye: Thank you.
Margaret: 3% Frank Burns and 2% my unmarried ex (or words to that effect)
Hawkeye: That sounds about right.
Margaret: No, 1%.
Hawkeye: [nods] You know, the trouble with us is that we're both waiting for
a custom
fit in an off-the-rack world.
Margaret: Looks like it's going to be a looong wait.
Hawkeye: Well, in the meantime [pushes Scrabble board at her]
etc.
Hawk beat out everyone but her father and Scully. Says something.

Thanks for running this through (yes, it has been a few years since I saw that
episode, and I see where my memories of someone being demoted came from).
I really did not remember that she ranked Hawkeye over Frank! That does say
something. Never could figure out what she saw in Frank anyway.

Of course she got used to his antics. After about season 6, he no longer had any
antics! :)

This could easily become a hot topic for debate, but here we go anyway.
I've never had the impression that they had sex. For one thing, they wake
up fully clothed, and while that's not conclusive, the impression I've
always had is that they fell asleep in each other's arms after they
hugging/kising frenzy.

This topic has been discussed in the past, but in more detail on Andy
Lawson's site - check out
the bulletin board: http://www.mash4077.co.uk/
It's not as obvious as most people think, what they did, but I think that
there are subtle clues
to the fact that they did do the deed. Two or three are in the episode
itself: 1) her attitude towards
him upon waking in the morning was very friendly and satisfied; remember,
HotLips (she was still
half HotLips/half Margaret in Season 6 - hadn't completely transitioned) was
hot to trot; 2) when they
went to bed, there was a candle and two empty cups on the table. When they
woke up, there were
empty food wrappers and an open can on the table when she went over to it to
get breakfast. They
had a snack after all that kissing and whatnot. We don't get the benefit of
any further bonding or
conversation that happened over that late meal. 3) Two scenes that are cut
in syndication: a speculation
between Potter, BJ, Charles and Mulcahy in Potter's office as to what
happened, and a conversation
with BJ in the Swamp, where Hawk tells BJ what happened; I think someone
transcribed it somewhere,
either on this newsgroup (do a Deja search) or on the bulletin board above.
and 4) subsequent references
to it, which are very subtle, but one is in "UN the Night and the Music" in
which Hawk is surprised that
the Swede would turn down a night with her, as you "could feel the earth
move without the aid of artillery".
Food for thought, anyway.

Unfortunately it doesn't, it just confuses it more. I can't
remember exactly what Hawkeye says, but it was something like
'they turned to each other' and 'he turned away first' and 'may
have insulted her'. Hawkeye also says that for awhile, when he
was angry at her, part of him was still thinking about the night
before.
I think we_are_supposed to believe that they "did it". Perhaps
they were just a bit too vague.

They were fully clothed? Well, sure -- would YOU like to be caught in
war-torn Korea in the morning nekkid???
As for the ambiguity, classic drama. Conflict, par excellance. But then,
we know that, don't we?

This whole debate also calls to mind the time BJ "fell off the fidelity
wagon" I think thse were his words anyway. It's difficult to say whether
or not there was any sex or just kissing. The way he describes his
feelings to Hawkeye might at first glance seem to indicate it, but this is
BJ we're talking about. He's so devoted to Peg that, to him, kissing
another woman is as much being unfaithful as sex would be to most others.
Any comments?
