RADAR AND THE BEAR-Elsig

Last night I watched Match Game at 11 PM, and Gary Burghoff was on
there (this was from around 1975 I believe). In one of the questions,
the contestant answered "teddy bear" (I don't remember the question).
and Gary Burghoff said, "What else would Radar O'Reilly say? Of course
it's teddy bear!"

That got me wondering two questions:

(1) whose idea was it for Radar to have a teddy bear (along with the
story behind it), and

(2) When you guys first cast the show back in 1972, was there ever any
question as to whether or not use Gary Burghoff in that role? did you
have anyone else in mind?

I know that was a few years ago and you might not remember that far
back. but I was just wondering.

(1) l wrote the prop into an early script and it just never went away.

(2) Gary Burghoff was the first and only choice.
