Who is Phillip Morris?
Gotta Know!
Jeez. I feel old.
>Who is Phillip Morris?
>Gotta Know!
Phillip Morris is a tobacco company (I believe they produce
Marlboro?).
In the early days of advertising on TV, they used a bellboy (a midget
I think) who would enter the lobby and say "Call for Phillip
Morris"
Thanks to Gary and MrQuixote for the answer! That's realy cool!
Sometimes a joke can be funny even if you have no idea what it meant, in
this case it was humourous to see Frank react like that but now the joke
makes sence and it realy was funny.
Thanks a lot guys.
Mike
More of a "What" than a who, it's the largest agency in the
business (acting that is). Casting, etc...

Maybe so, but you really did miss the joke, it had nothing to do withthe
tobacco company, it has to do with the Phillip Morris Talent Agency.

Phillip Morris was, and is, a tobacco company. It was their ads to which
Frank referred.
You're thinking of WILLIAM Morris.

M*A*S*H by Richard Hooker...)

John Lennon,
"A Hard Day's Night"
Phillip Morris was a tobacco company with an ad campaign on radio
during the early 1950's (and I guess early TV too?) which is completely
consistent with that remark on Maj. Burns part for two reasons.
1) The bellhop was always yelling in his distinctive style to find the
person
whom the call was for. That would explain the "unless there's a
call for"
line.
2) The actor who played the bellhop in the ads was very short and
thin, about
the physical stature of a jockey. With all the jokes and asides
Radar
seemed to get for his size it's a natural comment. Burns is making
a joke
that Radar is a rather small individual.
I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that the talent agency you're
referring to is the ***WILLIAM*** Morris Agency. Not Phillip.
Hate to disagree, but I don't think he missed the joke, I think YOU
did.
Ken
That's WILLIAM Morris for acting/casting and PHILIP Morris for yelling in
hotel lobbies.

What does a talent agency have to do with this joke? It sounds like
the midget bell-boy is more on an answer than simply saying it's a
talent agency.

Uh, no. The agecy is *William* Morris.
Allan
I'm afraid you missed it, bud. It's the *William* Morris Agency. Phillip
Morris is a tobacco company. There is also another Phillip Morris who
is one of the largest magic and costuming suppliers in the world but I
suppose that's irrelevant in this case.
