Hi, folks,

this must seem a very silly question to you, but as a viewer
of the german sync version of M*A*S*H there occurs the
question of the subject. Let me explain:

In the german version, Radar orders Grapefruit juice, but
the bottle he always gets contains rather dark liquid.
Therefore I suspect a sync fault.
Does he drink grape juice or grapefruit juice and if it
really was grapefruit juice how come it is so dark?

Greetings, John.

It's grape Ne-hi(?), a soft drink. One of the most classic Ne-hi moments,
IMHO, happens either in the series finale or during one of their bugouts
(can't remember which right now) when Radar and Hawkeye go to the Officers
Club for one last drink, and what does Radar drink but a Ne-hi, and after
taking his first swig of the stuff, says to Hawkeye, "Hmm, it's still got
its fizz.", to which Hawkeye replies, "Would I deny you a belch?". I've
always had to at least smile at that line. --- Cory

Radar's beverage of choice is Grape Nehi. Nehi was (perhaps still is) a
flavored soft-drink (soda-pop). Being grape flavored would explain the
colour. I would guess 'Nehi' didn't translate well.

This must be a sync fault. The name of the stuff is "Grape Ne Hi"
(or is this a pun on "knee high"?). I think it is supposed to be some
kind of grape juice, so that would be "traubensaft" in German I guess.
Must be a "grape <-> grapefruit" error. I have seen the same kind of
mistake in Dutch subtitling, but then I could still hear the original.

Neither, it's grape ne-hi, or simply put, grape soda. Wonder why they'd
call it grapefruit juce?

An error, I think. They translated "grape" to german
"Grapefruit", aka "Pampelmuse" in german. The correct
translation would have been "Traube".

Thank you all for your verifications.

It was a bug-out, esp. since Radar wasn't around for the finale.

And that's a classic scene, indeed!!

Not meaning to really got off the subject, but I need some trivia help here.
A friend and I were wathcing MASH the other night when he asked me what the
name of the song was for the TV show intro. I was totally stumped, and he
didn't know....that's why he wask asking :P. Anyway I know the theme song
for the movie was "Suicide IS Painless" but don't know about the TV series.
Is this the same song that is the intro for the television series or is
it some other song?
Plus another thing that really upsets me that after all summer without seeing
MASH, fox 21 of Greeneville has moved it to weekends only with one episode
a night. I guess every Fox station is getting new at ten now.

No, it is called NeHi. In fact, I have been told it is still sold in
certain parts of the US.

It is a soda pop drink called "Grape NeHi". I think that is the correct
spelling.
It is similar to orange soda but grape flavored. As far as the coloring I
am not sure if the studio used real soda or colored water as a prop.

Radar's drink of choice is Grape Ni-Hi (I think that's the spelling).
(Prounounced Knee-High) Ni-Hi was a soft drink company in the American
mid-west.

Just wanted to mention that several folks have spoken of Ne-Hi in the
past tense here, I've seen it for sale several places as recently as a
couple of years ago, so I do believe they still exist and it's still
manufactured. I just don't know if it's widely distributed.

Radar orders "Grape Neehigh" . I believe it is some sort of grape soda.

"Nehi" was the brand name of a soda pop. It was popular when I grew up in the
western US in the 60's. It came in orange and grape flavors as far as I remember,
there may have been a cherry flavor too. Anyway, Radar is drinking a
"grape Nehi".

Remember the scence in the officers club at Kimpo Airfield waiting for
Trapper's replacement. Corp. Capt. Radar orders a Grape NeHi with no
straw and the soldier next to him is looking at him and Radar says
something like " we don't use straws in combat fella".
Does anyone know the exact conversation in that scene?

I believe he drinks grape n-hi soda. I am unsure of the correct
spelling of N-hi.

Delurking just long enough:

Grape Ne-Hi

The brand stopped being offered I believe sometime in the 60's.

It's an error in the translation. What he drinks is actually
'Traubensaft', which explains the colour.

It is the same song. They just removed the words and play it as an
instrumental song, with a little bit more speed. But that's really easy
to hear.
