Are there any references to William Shakespeare's Macbeth on any M*A*S*H
episode?

There was an episode in which an apparently sane visiting surgeon simply
loses it, and is found sitting somewhere saying that he can't get the
blood stains off of his hands. Maybe there was an "Out, out, damn spot"
reference there.

Or maybe not.

On the weird dream episode, at the very
ending, doesn't Charles comment:
"To sleep, perchance to dream...", which
I believe *is* a quote from Hamlet.

IIRC, everyone was appalled by the comment,
even Charles.

Not directly.

In "Heal Thyself" (Season 8), the visiting surgeon played by Edward Herrmann
is seen rubbing his hands during triage. Later on, he leaves the OR and
disappears. When he is found, he says that he cannot get the blood out, no
matter how hard he tries. Maybe someone has the exact quote handy?

So, if you want to be generous, you could say that it was a nod to
Shakespeare; if you want to be vicious, you could say that they stole the
line. Either way, it is part of what makes MASH so exciting. You can find so
many references to so many things, pop culture or classics.

Yes, that's from Hamlet. Act Three, Scene One to be exact. From the "To
be, or not to be" speech.

I have a vague memory, can't place which episode though, oh Hawkeye saying
"Lead on, MacDuff" to somebody. My memory could be playing tricks on me
though.
Actually this is a commone misquote of "Lay on, MacDuff" when MacBeth is
inviting MacDuff, to fight to the death.

I believe it's from "Dear Ma", at one point or another when Radar is
taking Hawkeye to another foot inspection patient.

I was going to mention it myself, but I knew it wasn't a real quote from
MacBeth so I didn't.

"The blood . .. it won't come out, no matter how hard I try. [tries to rub
out blood from gloves] Where do they come from? [shakes his head and
cries] I can't . . . I can't."

That's as exact as I remember it. If I see the episode I'll be sure to
write it down.

I don't think its MacBeth but rather an underlined theme of utter helpless
to stop the tide of wounded and death. The dream episode (Hawkeye's,
Father Mulcahy's, and Charles' dream- stand out to me). Hawkeye saying, "I
don't care. Trapper went home and they're still coming. Henry got killed
and they're still coming." Potter blowing up at the lieutenant about
treating white phosphorous wounds.

I'm sure they are other examples of the main/sub characters feeling/showing
their impotence of not being able to *really" help. Remember, Sidney's
patient who heard voices which ordered suicide?
