However risky a move it might have been, it could have presented the
one change that may have redeemed the worst of M*A*S*H seasons and
perhaps even added one or two more. Thing is, I think the primary cast
was losing its effectiveness long before the close of the series
anyway, and I suspect writers were considering that before attempting
anything new.
I think the only time where Hawkeyes rank would have played a minor
part was in the early series. Frank (and Margaret, but even less so)
tried to play his "I'm a Major, you're a Captain" card a few times,
but unsuccesfully.

"You can't order me"
"Then make it a threat"
"Oh, well, that's different"

No one would care about it, and least of all Hawkeye himself. When
exactly did he show any respect for <quote>that GI crappola<\quote>?

There was a glimpse of it when he was left in command and blew his cork when
BJ left camp without telling him.
Margaret: "If Frank Burns could see you now."
"This was a swell war till you guys showed up."
" I love it here"
And how about Winchester as camp commandant?

To this day, I still laugh my arse off at that scene... hell,
practically the whole episode (and not in a "ha-ha funny!" way,
either... more like a sarcastic, "you gotta be kidding me with THIS
crapola!" kind of snicker). Margaret is so dead on target when she
throws that Burns line at Pierce that it's not funny. I keep thinking
during this episode that the writers must have been on strike or
something and that this was the scab writers' idea of a practical
joke.
It was a stupid episode. HAWKEYE in charge???!! I KNOW that that was
the gist of the episode, but c'mon... all of these conditions
collided, in a manner of speaking, like a perfect storm, to thrust
HAWKEYE into the CO's chair???!! WHO were they KIDDING???!!

Ya know, Cory, there had to come a day when you and I would completely agree
on a single episode. That day has arrived. Please pass me a Guinness Extra
Stout!
OK... here!
;-P
Seriously, this is one of those rare episodes where it seemed like the
writers sat there and said, "Y'know, we're fresh out of ideas... what
do we do?? Oh! I KNOW!!!"
Yeesh...

It's not. I laugh in a "Are you kidding me with this?!" way.
