Someone on another newsgroup said he was "fired". I have
no memory of any controversy. In fact, my memory is that
he ran the show for its entire run. So my memory's not
reference-quality on the issue.

The FAQ's no help.

What's the real story?

The reason why Larry left the show, we should leave up to Larry, but I don't
believe he was "fired" Gene Reynolds comments in the book on MASH "When he
[Larry] walked away after being so devoted, it was hard. Losing him was a blow,
..."

Larry was only the producer for the first four seasons, with Burt Metcalfe as
producer/executve producer for season 5 through 11.

Mr Gelbart left the series after Season 4 because he felt he had gone
as far as he could working on M*A*S*H. 97 episodes is quite a lot of
work.

Some people have mistaken Larry Gelbart for being on M*A*S*H for the
entire run because his name is in the credits of every show.

I've seen him listed with a "Devoloped for Television" credit

If I was fired, the mail must be awfully slow.

I was CO-producer (along with Gene Reynolds) for seasons 2, 3, and 4.

The "Developed for TV" credit appears on every end credit. A Consultant credit
does not.

I believe that's why it's called "snailmail".

Yes, but we're talking about Larry Gelbart's credit, not Alan Alda's.
Gelbart was never listed as a consultant.

Gelbart "developed" the series for television, and was credited for
doing so at the end of every episode. Later seasons also included
"creative consultant" credits for Gene Reynolds and Alan Alda.

It's nice to come back to the group and see Larry straightening out the
kids with their wacky ideas again ;) The posts about what credits appear
on "MASH" made me realize I don't have any "MASH" episodes on tape - and I
don't think I want to start taping them off Fox, what with the cuts and
time compression.
So I'll ask what has probably already been answered - is "MASH" on
video, DVD, or another channel which doesn't cut the episodes as much?

The episodes on DVD and the new VHS cassettes are completely uncut.

It's a revelation to watch the series evlove in its first year.

Yay! I rented some "MASH" from a video store several years ago and
never did know if it was a legal VHS tape or dubs from TV... but my video
catalogue of choice didn't have "MASH" listed so I assumed it wasn't even
out on video.

I'm just happy I was old enough to remember some of the later seasons,
although it means I know when parts have been cut from the FX versions,
which causes much anger on my part.
Next year, I'm asking Santa for a DVD player.

And that's EXACTLY why I love season 1.

I've only watched three or four of the first year's episodes. It all looks so
innocent, so pristine.

There's a neatness about everything - the actors' appearance, the camp, the
dialogue.

When we started maturing, letting the series look and feel like Hawkeye's
progressively scuffier shoes, I think things started looking up.

More on all this later, I expect, as others here join in this refresher course.

I imagine after a few years you want to move on. Many do (David E. Kelley,
Bochco) leave the show they pioneered after a while to do other things, not
get stale, create other shows/projects, etc. It's great seeing the DVD's as
shows are in order (they always showed Henry Please Come Home as the second
episode after the pilot where I lived, and Fox--never mind, they jump all
over the damn place). Even CH videos were a hodge-podge, but at least they
were uncut. But the DVD's are perfect, great packaging with the listings,
etc. And I can try watching without the laugh track, haha. Everyone buy a
set so the sales are good enough to run them through all the seasons.
