Does anyone know the episode where TM finally goes to visit the Wall?
And what song was playing in the background (I think it was Joe
Cocker). Please e-mail me as WDe...@iag.net

thanks

TM visits the Wall at the end of the season six episode "Going Home" (6.6).
The song is Joe Cocker's " I Shall Be Released".
He visits the wall again in the series finale "Resolutions".

Pete,

Not exactly sure what you are referring to here because I can't remember what
thread this is, but if you are asking if Joe Cocker's "I Shall Be Released"
from the "Going Home" episode where TM goes back to the Wall is played again in
"Resolutions," the answer is no.

But the episode does have some great songs in it, including Otis Redding's
classic version of "Try A Little Tenderness" (which was first used in "Forty" I
think), and the Temptations Motown gem "My Girl."

There may be some more songs used in "Resolutions," but right now I can't think
of them.

And, of course, Joe Cocker is used in the series again in the first episode of
the final season, "Infinity and Jelly Doughnuts" through the use of his song
"I'm So Glad I'm Standing Here Today," which is actually him accompanied by the
jazz group the Crusaders.

All these songs can be found on the Magnum Soundtrack (1989) available from
David Romas/Magnum Memorabilia. "I Shall Be Released," written by Bob Dylan,
was originally released on Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help From My Friends"
album on the A@M label, and the song from "Infinity...Jelly Doughnuts" was
originally released on the Cruasder's album "Standing Tall" and has been
rereleased on Joe Cocker's box set.
Best,

Jake

Doesn't he stop and ponder at the name of Joey soomething (half brother?)
engraved on the wall? Was that name actually on the wall or was that a Hollywood
prop cut into the scene?

Lots of good music threaded throughout the
series. I even liked the periodic John Denver
stuff. But I think the most effective musica
background was in the Frank Sinatra episode.

Yep, Joey Peterson, either his half brother or his stepbrother, I can't really
remember which.

That's a good question, Jim, and one I wondered myself last time I watched
"Going Home." David, anybody, do you know?

Being biased towards "Limbo" and to being a John Denver fan (yeah, I'm not
ashamed to admit it), I give the nod to the most effective use of music in the
series to Denver's "Looking For Space" in the "Limbo" episode.

But, I agree with Jim that the "Laura" epsidoe also effectively used music, as
did the recently talked about Joe Cocker music in both "Going Home" and
"Infinity...Jelly Doughnuts," as well as the music used in the episodes "LA,"
"Forty," "Resolutions," "Death and Taxes," and so on. We could do this all
day, I guess.

Does anybody else have any favorite examples of uses of music in certain
episodes?

Thanks for the note, Jim, and to the others who have posted as well. The
discussion of music used in the series is one of my favorites.

I live just outside of DC and have passes by the Memorial many times. The
next time I am there I will check out the Joey Peterson listing and let everyone
know.
If it turns out to be on the wall it will raise a number of interesting
questions, won't it?

I couldn't find any info on Joey Peterson on the wall. Here is their search

It is really well done.

Chris/Jim:

Thanks for all the research on this. If anybody comes up with anything new,
please let us all know, or email me privately.

Thanks,

There is a Paul Joseph Petersen, from Michigan. Which makes me wonder: was
there ever a reason given in any episode why Magnum was a Tigers fan? He was
from Virginia after all.

It's a prop. I first visited The Wall in 1990 and the very first thing I
did was search for Joey Peterson. No such name there.

In the sixth season episode "Going Home" we find out that, as a kid, Thomas
idolized his maternal grandfather Everett Wendel Currier. In a clip from an
old home movie Thomas is watching, we see that Everett wore the Tigers cap.
I think we're supposed to make the connection that Thomas picked up his love
for the Tigers from his beloved grandpa. Why Everett would have been a
Tigers fan in the first place never is explained. Although, I suppose we
don't know for sure that Everett too was from Virginia. For all we know, he
could have been from Michigan.

And, of course, the reality of the situation is that Magnum wears a Tigers cap
because Tom Selleck wanted him to wear one. Selleck was born here in Detroit
and has lots of extended family here in different parts of Michigan. However,
he has lived basically his whole life, from the time he was a toddler (and not
counting the years he made his residence on Oahu) to the present, in Southern
California.

"Unfinished Business" is one of my favorites, and I liked the use of "The
Brazilian" in that episode. I also liked the "love theme" used in "Memories
Are Forever".

To answer you question, I believe that was something TS added to the
character...he is a die hard Tigers fan.
Somebody correct if I am in error.

Since we are posting about the wall, this is not really OT.
I was a military brat and my father served over in Vietnam, thank God he
returned home fine. My mother used to do a lot of work campaigning for the
POW/MIA's, so the Vietnam war was a part of my growing up. When I started
watching Magnum and became really aware of how badly our soldiers were
treated when they returned home it really bothered me.
So I decided to do something to remember them by, albeit small, it is my way
of saying thanks. When I turned 18 and regiestered for the draft, I poured
through documents at our local library. I did not have access to the
Internet back then. I found that there were 17 soldiers killed on my
birthday 17 Feb 66. Every year on my birthday, I drink a toast to those 17
men that gave their life on the day I was brought into this world. I had a
plaque engraved with their names and a little poem I wrote and every year on
my birthday I read over their names and drink a toast to them. It is my way
of saying "you will never be forgotten".
To all of you that served and are reading this, I am drinking one to you
now.

thanks,
chris
