Hey Gang,

Just curious if anybody out there has been successful in tracking down either
the VMO2 Da Nang cap, or the patch to put on a cap yourself. I did a search on
the web and one site came up, but unfortunately with the note that the patch is
not currently available from them.
David Romas sent me the info on this a couple of years ago, which naturally I
have misplaced, but I was just wondering if any of the gang here has tracked
the patch and/or hat down recently.

Thanks in advance!

Jake

Hey Jake,
I thought I'd respond here in case there were others looking for the patch as
well.
Douglas Boyer Militaria in Honolulu has the patch. They're $4.00 each.

You'll need a navy blue cap to sew the patch on. If you want to go as
authentic as possible, it should be a fitted wool serge cap with a green
underbill. Otherwise, any navy brushed cotton or wool serge cap should do.
If you need some sources for blank caps, let me know. I found several places
on the web to get them.

Thanks for the information, Dave. I appreciate it. I'll get in touch with you
if I can't find the cap.

Best,

Here are several sites that sell blank caps:
http://www.hatshack.com/index.html
http://www.capfactory.com/
http://www.copycaps.com/index1.html
http://www.pluspos.com/pages/Baseball/Caps.html

I recently found a nice blank cap at Wal-Mart. It's a navy blue
wool cap made by Headmaster Inc. It is the superflex style. It
looks like a fitted cap but has spandex to stretch to fit. They
make them in two sizes, S-M and L-XL. It's a lower profile
structured cap and is very well made.
Good cap hunting.

The closest I've found is Custom Clothing.
http://www.custom-clothing.com/hats.html

It is their item number 120A. They call it "Wool Serge Pro Cap". It is
actually 86% polyester and 14% wool. It's a high crown structured cap with a
green underbill, however it isn't fitted - it has an plastic adjustment strap.
Made in Sri Lanka

I ordered one, but didn't use it. It's just too big for me. It looks like a
saucepan on my head. At 5'11", 170 lbs, I'm not a big guy and don't have a big
enough head to fill the thing out. I ordered a structured medium crown cap
from Copy Caps - http://www.copycaps.com/index1.html - and used that,
although I may switch over to the wool superflex cap I picked up at WalMart.
Neither has a green underbill, but that wasn't as important as the thing
actually fitting me.

The HatShack has all wool fitted blank caps, but there is no mention of
underbill color.

I don't really like plastic adjustment straps, but it does make it more
authentic.
I've got two Navy ball caps with me right now and the boat names and
dolphins are sewn in there, not patched. (So if you want to go all out,
get someone to stitch it in. <g>)

The one with the green underbill has in its tag:
Gull Associates
Old Lyme, CT. 06371

The other one which has a navy blue underbill and is at least 8 years
old and seems more polyester than wool (Boo Hiss USS Daniel Boone for
getting cheap caps) says:
Northstar (Since 1976)
P.O. Box 569
Kingston, WA 98346

Magnum's VMO2 cap and Tigers cap are fitted. Caps with adjustment straps
actually are less authentic.

Magnum's "VMO2 DA NANG" is a patch on his cap, not stitched into the
cap itself.

Dave Snyder's recommendation of Douglas Boyer Militaria is a good one.
That currently is the only source for the VMO2 patch that I have record
of. Other sources have come and gone over the years but Boyer (which
used to be called The Military Shop of Hawaii) has had the VMO2 patch
available for at least thirteen years (that's how long ago I got mine
from MSOH) and probably even longer yet.

The Military Shop in Honolulu is a good source,

They do mail-order.

Don't know if they have a website, but their phone is listed in the
Honolulu Direotry white pages. . .
