This happens in the episode where Magnum was playing a game on the
computer and ended up erasing some of higgin's writing. So Higgins pays
him back, Magnum seals the cannon with cement, higgins cuts the rubber
chicken's head off so magnum blows up Higgin's little bridge and so on.
In the episode the end up getting stuck in a building together that is
supposed
to be blown up and this is where they get on the subject and Magnum makes
the claim. Sorry I don't recall the episode number but I think it was on A&E
last week.

There is a character called Robin Masters, we've seen him in
various episodes. I think Higgins and Robin were friends in
Higgin's vast military exploits. Robin bought the estate with
the profits of low-priced loot acquired during their many
campaigns and invited Higgins to stay and run the place for
him. Robin started writing the pulp, and sending it to Higgins
to be typecast and published. Higgins eventually took over more
of the writing himself, while doing the serious work of
recording his memoirs...
He would make various slips, and Thomas, that sharp boy, siezed
the idea and ran with it!
That's how it appears to me, anyway.

Doesn't that blow the entire thing out of the water?

Before you buy.
I think Robin saw the same need for space in Higgins that he saw
in Thomas, and gave him absolute freedom to stay as long as he
needed to. Higgins rose to the offer, of "say, Jonathan, why
don't you stay on here and help '...' manage the place?"
That makes it more plausible, don't you think?
Or just how did Higgins come to be 'Major Domo' of a plush
estate in Paradise...that's my question for the weekend!
