About an hour ago, the Hanso Foundation website re-opened in
preparation for the Official Lost Webmaze. If we try to access parts
of the site, a person named **Persephone** asks us for a password. So,
we need your Greek Mythology expertise.

Come to the lost-tv forum linked below, if you can.

Don't you find it a little strange that the photo of Hanso is a screen
capture from "Lost," and not a regular photo like other photos of people on
the site?

They probably haven't cast the part yet. The window Hanso that we've
seen is likely just a stand in until they actually choose an actor. Like
they did with Libby, Ana, & Bernard during the 'Udders' encounter.

A book by Arthur C. Clarke in the Venus Prime series. About a woman who
is the product of advanced biotech.

Also "Hymn of Breaking Strain" by Rudyard Kipling.

Persephone is responsible, in mythology, for the earth going dormant in
the winter.

Okay, I just started reading alt.tv.lost for the evening, and I'm
seeing discussion about loads of new things. I see you got the
password for this. I will have to view the new Hanso site before I can
comment very much, but there are a couple of things I wanted to point
out about Hanso, Joop, and Persephone.

In my Greek mythology theory, Hanso represents Hades, god of the
Underworld. Persephone was his wife, and also the daughter of Demeter.
She was kidnapped and brought to the Underworld. I believe that Alex
represents Persephone, and Danielle represents Demeter. You can look
up more information about all three of them on my site:

http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/lostdogon/

I also speculated that Master Joop was a code name for Alvar Hanso.
See
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.lost/msg/84af14e417e648b3?dmode=source

Now it seems that there is some kind of shadowy figure over the Joop
webcam. Gotta check that out.

Finally, for those who still think my theory about Greek mythology,
Jason and the Argonauts, and the Dogon people is nutty - which must be
at least 99% of you :) - I'd like you to read this paragraph from
http://www.geocities.com/SATANICREDS/sirius.html . It ties everything
together in one neat little package:

"Ethnologists say the Dogons are the cultural and biological
descendents of 'ancient Greeks' from the Isle of Lemnos in the Aegean
Sea....The Lemnians themselves claimed descent from the fifty Argonauts
of Jason in Greek legend who, according to the legend, went to Libya,
migrated westward as the Garamantians, were driven south and eventually
reached the River Niger in Mali after many centuries to interbreed with
the natives and teach them."

And that, my friends, is why the creators of the show made Flight 815
into the Argo, and a lot of the Losties Argonauts.

Quote: "Her code name is Sparta. Her beauty veils a mysterious past and
abilities far surpassing those of a normal human. For she is more than
human, Sparta is a product of advanced biotech engineering. Now she
wants to find the memories that have been hidden from her."

So she has a name from classical Greece, and she's more than human.
Remember what I've said about Janelle and the "Lost" diary. There is
no new diarist. Janelle underwent some kind of transformation on Night
43, and now she understands her true identity, while her human identity
has been forgotten.

Two other references may be significant.

1. Arthur C. Clarke's original short story "Breaking Strain" (in which
two spacemen struggle over supplies enough for only one) had a cargo
ship with an ion drive. More about ion engines at
http://www.answers.com/topic/ion-thruster :

"Film creator and director George Lucas seems to have some confidence
in ion thrusters: in the Star Wars movies, the technologically
sophisticated Empire's TIE Fighters get their name from the Twin Ion
Engines used for propulsion. Furthermore, ion propulsion is the most
commonly used method of sub light propulsion for the great majority of
the starships in the fictional Star Wars universe.
Arthur C. Clarke's 1949 short story Breaking Strain features a cargo
ship with an "ion drive" powered by "Atomic motors".
In Star Trek (Episode: Spock's Brain), the Enterprise encounters a
vehicle using ion thrusters."

2. Breaking strain is the force needed to break a rope. This may have
significance in this "Lost" internet promotion, because it could be
connected to the Gordian knot, which was cut by Alexander the Great.

> Also "Hymn of Breaking Strain" by Rudyard Kipling.

"Hymn of Breaking Strain" (
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/etcbin/toccer-new2?id=KipBrea.sgm&images=images/modeng&data=/texts/english/modeng/parsed&tag=public&part=1&division=div1
)

The careful text books measure
(Let all who build beware!)
The load, the shock, the pressure
Material can bear.
So, when the buckled girder
Lets down the grinding span,
The blame of loss, or murder,
Is laid upon the man.
Not on the Stuff -- the Man!

But in our daily dealing
With stone and steel, we find
The GODS have no such feeling
Of justice toward mankind.
To no set gauge they make us, --
For no laid course prepare --
And presently o'ertake us
With loads we cannot bear.
Too merciless to bear.

The prudent text-books give it
In tables at the end --
The stress that shears a rivet
Or makes a tie-bar bend --
What traffic wrecks macadam --
What concrete should endure --
But we, poor Sons of Adam,
Have no such literature,
To warn us or make sure!

We hold all Earth to plunder --
All Time and Space as well --
Too wonder-stale to wonder
At each new miracle;

Till, in mid-illusion
Of Godhead 'neath our hand,
Falls multiple confusion
On all we did or planned.
The mighty works we planned.

We only of Creation
(Oh, luckier bridge and rail!)
Abide the TWIN-damnation --
To fail and know we fail.
Yet we -- by which sole token
WE KNOW WE ONCE WERE GODS --
Take shame in being broken
However great the odds --
The Burden or the Odds.

Oh, veiled and secret Power
Whose paths we seek in vain,
Be with us in our hour
Of overthrow and pain;
That we -- by which sure token
We know thy ways are true --
In spite of being broken,
Because of being broken,
May rise and build anew.
Stand up and build anew!

Hi all, not sure how often you guys are checking this thread, but here
is something that should interest you mythology buffs.
check out www.widmoregroup.com. (def another Lost related site), list
of company directors has names that should ring bells with Lost fans,
but if you click on latest 'projects', there is a 'Project Sparta',
which can only be accessed with a netowork login and password! Also on
the 'home' screen, if you 'tab' around to highlight the clickable
links, there are hidded easter eggs ones alongside the 'careers'
section.
What do you think?

Too bad, but a nice-looking site. The name Project Sparta may have
come from the password "breaking strain," which was the title of a book
with a female character named Sparta.

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/c/arthur-c-clarke/breaking-strain.htm

"Her code name is Sparta. Her beauty veils a mysterious past and
abilities far surpassing those of a normal human. For she is more than
human, Sparta is a product of advanced biotech engineering. Now she
wants to find the memories that have been hidden from her."

Not that this is necessarily far from the truth about Widmore, though.
:)
