I was wondering on this. This incident [from the 11/20 show] happened
a few months ago not too far from where the L&O version took place.
The writers also threw in a bit from Columbia University's ongoing
plan to redevelop a good size chunk of West Harlem as a second campus.

But the real life storeowner was treated as a hero. But now he sees
this episode, sees that Elliot Gould is playing him; does he tell
everyone he knows to turn in, and then what; he sees his heroic act
turned completely in its head. Do you know if the show's producers
contact the people their shows are based on and preview it with them?
Otherwise it must be quite a shock if unprepared.

they take a story and always change it,
if they ask the real person anything or for their story they have to pay
them

"the names have been changed to protect the profits"
