Illness? Surely NOT death? Just ready to retire?
Perhaps Steven will do a guest shot early in the season to bring some
kind of closure to his character. He (and Adam) deserve to go out on
a better note than Vaya, imo.

Before you buy.
Yes the "Vaya" episode would be a flimsy way to explain his leaving.
Unfortunately this is L&O and we may get barely a mention of it in
passing. Boy won't that be a bummer.
I was wondering that exact same thing when I heard he was "replaced" yesterday.
I can't imagine the writers just explaining away arguably the most popular
character on there with a few sentences. I would hope that Hill would make an
appearance...could even make it a good two parter to open the season with....to
explain the departure.
I saw on IMDb that Wiest appeared in several films with Waterston. Maybe she
came recommended by him? I still think it is an awful choice. I am trying to
remain open, but dang....

And what's this about Diane Weist? A good character actress and
fabulous in such films as "Independance Day", she would likely never
make my roster of actors primed to replace Steven Hill.
A suggestion of an appropriate show to pass the legal torch from Adam
to....well, Diane if that has to be the case, could be having him
experiencing a series of flashbacks to life with his beloved late
wife, first when they met, their courtship, marriage and long time
together before she succumbed to a fatal stroke several years ago.
After admitting to McCoy that he had "been with her all day" and that
he was questioning how he wanted to spend his twilight years, he
remembered a quote from his loved one that may go something like,
"Adam. none of us know just how much time we have. We must make the
best of it because it never rolls around again".
Yeah, kinda corny but at least it doesn't bump the poor guy off, a
ploy terribly overused in television drama today.

What this is about Dianne Wiest is that Wolf, thankfully, went outside
the box and hired a talented actress who will ,in fact ,be playing a
"character actress" role. She'll be fine. BTW, I doubt Steven Hill
would have been on very many rosters to play Adam Schiff back in 1990!
And that didn't turn out too be too bad a choice. ;)

I would do a "Vaya Con Dios" Part 2 myself to open the season, making that
Adam's last episode (and would have shot it immediately after the season finale
with two endings to allow for either way in the case of Adam), and introduce
the new DA (Dianne Wiest) in the second episode of season 11.

Please! No flashbacks! They might work beautifully on another show, but
not on L&O. If anything, a brief press conference scene, (or better yet,
Jack and Adam talking to each other before a press conference, or on
election night) where Adam announces his resignation and the governor
introduces his successor, or Adam concedes defeat in the election, or
whatever, and then let Jack and Abbie deal with facing a new boss in the
middle of a case.
L&O is about professionals, who take pride in their work ethic, and their
ability to separate their private lives from work. Let Adam leave with
understated dignity, as befits both his character and the show, and let
the new DA have a chance to establish herself in the show's formula,
rather than being burdened with an atypical episode as her first
impression.

Dianne Wiest was not in Independence Day. Who are you thinking of?

...and now on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" our next game is "World's
Worst". Each contestant must act out the world's worst thing in
a category of my choosing. Let's have the world's worst farewell
episodes for Adam Schiff:

> wife, first when they met, their courtship, marriage and long time
> together before she succumbed to a fatal stroke several years ago.
Wow. That's hard to beat. How about:
In the style of a recent "Just Shoot Me!" episode, the entire hour
of Law & Order is replaced with an episode of A&E's Biography,
telling the biography of Adam Schiff?
Others?
I'll miss Steven Hill, but I'm looking forward to the new DA.
Maybe this means when they come to their senses and boot angie harmon they'll
bring in a male assistant for jack.
Me.
Like I said before, I would have done a part two of "Vaya Con Dios" that would
have been shot with two endings concerning Adam immediately after shooting the
season finale, which in this case would be Adam's last episode. I would then
introduce the new DA in the second episode of season 11.
Very true about Steven Hill in 1990. Very few people would have thought of him
10 years ago (especially since he left Mission: Impossible after only one
season as Dan Briggs and Peter Graves went on to his greatest fame as Jim
Phelps on that show), remember, he only got the Schiff role in the first place
because Roy Thinnes (who played Alfred Wentworth in the original 1988 pilot)
was not available from my understanding.
All I can say is: WORD!
See why I love Ursula, everyone? She always says what I want to say; more
concisely and quicker.

Hehe... I loved that show -- the original one, that is.

They could do "Adam Schiff: Behind The (Complete Lack Of) Music."
Or... hmm... Adam quits because of Jack's Viking antics. "I told you: no
marauders."
And in the Whose Line? vein:
"Oh, look, it's the new D.A.: Clive Anderson!"

If Wiest's character defeats him in the general election, does that mean
she's Republican? If so, how do they explain a Republican getting elected
in New York County (i.e., Manhattan)? Manhattan voters are overwhelmingly
liberal and Democrat. If she is a Republican, that would mean a change in
policies in the DA's office (e.g., a Republican probably would have
squashed McCoy's prosecution of the gun manufacturer in "Gunshow").
A third-party candidacy is not out of the question (Liberal Party
candidates have won elections in New York City, IIRC), but it would be
unusual.
Any comments?
