This episode opened with Olivia and Fin in an undercover cop car with Fin
heading to get some coffee when a man walks into the shop with an automatic
rifle with Fin being shot (but alive) along with another man, an unarmed kid
and the shooter who was dead (shot by Fin), while a kid in the store was still
alive.
The next scene has Fin in the hospital in shock and headed for the OR for
emergency sugery, with after a change of clothes Olivia going to see Fin's son
Quazi to tell him what happened, with Quazi noting he had not seen him in
years. At the same time, Elliot and Fin are at the bodega where this happened,
with the tape then being shown to Cragen and other cops that showed the
"unarmed" second victim it turning out throwing a gun onto an overhead shelf.
Like at this point how the cops made it obvious that Fin did everything
correctly.
Fin's son walks in, but in turn only sees his dad briefly. We after that see
Fin out of the hospital a few days later walking around, with Fin talking to
Don when another woman (Sandra Knowles, Jeanetta Arnette) then coming in
screaming that Fin was no "hero" in her eyes, claiming that Fin put a gun to
her head, with Fin saying he had no choice at the time while working
undercover. That seemed to be par for the course here, especially since the
story otherwise would have ended way too early.
Fin is then seen quite upset when Cragen walks in. He noted how a top coke
dealer named Vance Dennis (Kevin Pinassi), now serving 20 years in Attica had
Fin as a bodyguard while working undercover, with Sandra's daughter Trisha then
ratting out Vance at the time. Vance was no help to Fin when he saw him, and
Fin now felt he killed Trisha. Fin then heads back to his old Narcotics
department and gets a rookie Detective (Mike Sandoval, Nicholas Gonzalez), who
then talks to another of the heads of the coke ring ("Fat Tony", Jeffrey
Thompson), who then buys coke frome him and Fin then arrests, bringing him into
interrogation.
Fin then demands that "Fat Tony" wants info on Tricia, and slaps him. After
Sandoval then notes they had other info on him, "Fat Tony" notes the Murphy
Twins paid Trisha a visit and killed her. The opinion was then that Trisha may
have killed herself, but it was also noted in the autopsy report that Trisha
had a baby, which was a very interesting (but not surprising) twist in the
story.
Fin is next seen with M.E. Warner where Trisha's grave is on an Island in
Manhattan where her body is pulled out of a grave, with Fin taking a careful
look at the numbers on it before we next see him with Cragen telling him to
back off before he realized that he could not do that. He then asks Casey to
look into it, with after Sandoval first not happy with Fin before realizing why
Fin was doing this, he then went to the doctor who took care of her and then
went to a diner where the owner noted how Trisha was roomates with a Lizzie
Jones, who then after Trisha was killed apparently took her baby, Austin. They
then talk to Sandra, who explains how she tried to separate Trisha and Lizzie
apart. They then head to a project in The Bronx, where they talk to several
homeless people about Lizzie. Apparently, Lizzie stole a lot of items that she
then sold to them, and she always had the baby with her.
Sandoval and Fin then head for the house Lizzie was appearing to live in, with
Sandoval about to go in when Fin realizes there was a "trip wire", and an
explosion of the house happens that Fin gets Sandoval away from.
Fire trucks then come to the scene, who note that millitary schrapnel was used
all over the house, with firefighters then noting that no bodies were in the
house, with tons of matchbooks in the house. They then note that no drugs were
still used there, as that would have blown up the entire house. They then note
that Lizzie's beau T.D. had been stocking up supplies of stuff used to make
methanphedomines, noting that much of it was cold pills that were stolen by
Lizzie in the Bronx and extreme upper Manhattan (the 230s). Fin then talks to a
man at one store who tells them Lizzie was headed for an auto supply store,
where Fin and Sandoval find Lizzie, who notes that T.D. had Austin with him.
Fin and Sandoval are at a day care center when a bunch of kids and a woman come
out from the smell of Methanphedomenes when Fin decides not to wait for HAZMAT
crews and suits, with Sandoval getting the kids out, and T.D. refusing to give
up the baby before Sandoval gets Austin safely from behind, and Sandra then
comes wanting to see her grandchild, which sets up a very tearful reunion.
This episode was quite a showcase for Ice-T and another excellent episode.

Do you think he's the son of Officer Nikki Sandoval from A Death In The
Family? B^)

From what I remember about the season one original episode, I don't think she
did have children, but it would have been very interesting if he was her son
(and since that episode originally aired 14 years ago, it would not be
unrealistic either).

The "MAC-10" Is a fully automatic sub-machine gun (also can be had in
semi-automatic variants variants) and is legal in only NFA-friendly
states if manufactured before 1996 with the proper tax-stamp and LEO
sign off.
When you say "automatic rifle," that could mean this:
The Select fire BAR machine gun:

Thank goodness the writers for SVU pointed out the MAC-10 in FA is
nearly tactically useless, the man was shot in the body, then in the
head, then half the wall was sprayed with bullets. Without a
compensator/suppressor and the stock folded the thing is useless.
What gets me about people is they fail to differentiate between
"machine gun" and "semi-automatic."
People were not pleased with phone-in vote gimmick stuck onto the end of
last week's episode. Now it seems that simlar forces are threatening to
reintroduce a "Falsone" character such as threatened to make Homicide
into a formula potboiler. At least Seda was a competent actor as
Falsone.
New series would not directly degrade quality of SVU, except that it
seems to be taking away Finn, to do which I think would be a bad
mistake. And I'll bet that the character who replaces him is a prettyboy
or prettygirl.
