Police found the body of a 20-month-old girl reported missing since Wednesday,
and they say the boyfriend of the girl's mother was involved in her death.
The body of Liana Marissa Sandoval was found at about 7 a.m. today in a canal
at 23rd Avenue and Indian School Road, Phoenix Police Sgt. Lauri Williams said.
Police would not comment on how the girl was killed.
Juan Velazquez, 23, who lived with the girl's mother, was arrested at 11 p.m.
Thursday on charges of child abuse involving the girl's 3-year-old sister. He
later admitted to hurting both girls and told police the location of Liana's
body, Williams said.
Velazquez, booked into Madison Street Jail, has not yet been charged in
connection with the girl's death.
Liana was reported missing on Wednesday morning by her mother, Virginia
Venegas, and Velazquez. Venegas told police that Velazquez had gone to their
apartment complex laundry room at about 7 a.m. She assumed Liana had gone with
Velazquez but when she called him about 7:30 a.m., he said the girl was not
with him.
The girls' biological father, Anthony Sandoval, took custody of the 3-year-old
as the search for Liana continued. He noticed unusual markings and bruising on
the older girl and took her to a hospital Thursday.
Venegas and Velasquez were previously investigated by state Child Protective
Services for allegations of child abuse or neglect involving both girls,
authorities said.
