This morning I read in a magazine that the Vatican has no extradition treaties.

Knowing the Church's current position on capital punishment I'm surprised that no one has sought sanctuary in the Vatican.

In Rome if a criminal for whatever crime runs to Saint Peter's Square do the Italian police have to stop their chase at the boarder? I suppose that's true for any country. If a person were to commit a crime in El Paso, Texas they could flee across the bridge into Mexico and the US police could not follow. And vice versa.

Given the Church's current position on capital punishment, it should
come as no surprise that Italy doesn't have the death penalty.

Under Article 22 of the Lateran Pact, Vatican City will turn over all
persons who may have taken refuge there who are accused of committing on
Italian soil acts which are criminal in both nations. This is not an
extradition treaty. There is no reciprocity.

Thanks for the clarification!

The reason I brought this up was because the article I read was about a pedophile Archbishop who was the Vatican ambassador to the Dominican Republic and whether he should be sent back to the DR for trial and punishment.

The RCC removed sanctuary from the Code of Canon Law in 1983.

No. Under Article 3 of the 1929 Lateran Treaty, the Italian police have
jurisdiction over the Square, not including the steps leading to the
basilica:

The USA police could not follow into Mexico but the USA could darned sure have a criminal extradited from Mexico. Mexico has an extradition treaty with the USA.With the terrible relations the USA is starting to have with immigration and Mexico it would take a foolish person to try to hide in Mexico. A criminal may simply end up in a Mexican jail where Lord knows how long before you get out. USA police do not have to follow into a country for usa government to request extradition from a country with usa extradition treaty.
