As a follow-up to their investigation in New York, Bayliss and Pembleton
question Egan's wife and son to try identify any accomplices. The "tip of
the iceberg" that Brian Egan spoke about tries to keep him quiet by
killing his wife. New York City detectives Briscoe and Curtis come to
Baltimore. Munch finds out that Briscoe knew his ex-wife intimately (she
had moved to New York City after their divorce). The son is taken into
protective custody, where he is questioned further and he gives up a name.
The suspect is caught trying to escape in his seaplane. Then the New York
City DA's office comes down to extradite him back to their
territory. Pembleton is upset by this and made further upset by the status
of the suspect before the train pulls into the station.

Part 1 of this story aired as episode #124 of Law & Order.
As viewer J. Michele Freeman pointed out to me, the fanatical nutball in
this episode would go onto join Law & Order in the 8th season as recurring
character Emil Skota.

Munch also loses about five hundred dollars to Lennie in a game of pool.
There's a spectacular scene with Briscoe, Curtis, and Claire Kincaid sitting
around drinking with the Homicide squad:
Curtis: "Married six years, three kids and at night when I have dirty dreams
they're about my wife."
Kay Howard: "Oh, make me puke!"
Tim Bayliss: "And I am utterly single."
Claire: "Stop staring at me."
Briscoe: "Here's to wearing a badge, carrying a high-powered firearm, and being
right more often than we're wrong."
>Then the New York

To spoil the end (but since the show's in syndication, it doesn't really
matter): the suspect, Alexander Rausch, has a minor heart attack while being
interrogated. The judge rules in favor of extradition to New York. Pembleton
is not amused. While the detectives wait with the suspect for the train to New
York, Rausch has another heart attack and dies. It's an incredibly powerful,
well-played scene.
