I haven't seen "Six feet Under" but I did see a fleeting picture of one
of the actors on ET, and I 'think' they said her name was Lauren Ambrose.
If so, is she the same young actor from L&O's "Damaged" season 8? Thanks.

Yes, it is. She is a repeat offender, actually.

I read an article about Six Feet Under and indeed, it is the girl who
had quite significant parts on L&O twice that I can recall. She played the
younger sister of the boy who killed his father after a history of abusing
him, and she played a developmentally challenged teen who is gang raped,
although the judge said she wasn't, by a group of boys in a high school
where she was being mainstreamed. When you figure out that she's seventeen
now, and how old she must have been when she did the first L&O ep she was
in, you've got one hell of a good actress for someone so young.

Lauren Ambrose is in her early 20's and married.

She got good reviews in a bad teen movie (Can't Hardly Wait). I like people

She earned some kind of award for her Valerie Maxwell performance.
That part that had a million ways to do it badly, not to mention the
potential for offending the developmentally-challenged and their
families, but she pulled it off with incredible dignity, skill and
sensitivity. (And once again, this reinforces the notion that a
talented actor doesn't need half a season to get into a character.)
Anyway, every time I see this episode I'm just amazed at how good she
is. Likewise, she nailed her other L&O appearances too. It's nice to
see that she's getting regular work these days. Too bad Six Feet
Under is so forgettable otherwise.

Whoa! Somebody got it wrong. I think I saw that she was seventeen on
some television interview or other . . . or a TV guide article, can't
remember now. Are we talking about the same actress? Pretty, red hair?

Maybe I misunderstood. I've got to say, I find it easier to believe
she's older, given the depth of her performances.

Perhaps you misheard - I think she was 17 when she did one of the LO
eps. I know she's in her 20's because I read it on the TV Guide 6 fet
under web page and was amazed at how well she still played a high
school girl.

Another actress from 6 feet under also shows up on Law and Order - the
woman who plays the mother, Ruth. She was the spiritual healer on LO,
the one who tried to exorcise the girl who died...

Yup. It's listed in the imdb.com. She was married in 2001. Birthdate
is 16 November 1978, making her 23.

She really is a good actress, though. Her early appearances on L&O were
excellent, and she was just a child then. And she cracked me up as
"Chicklet" in "Psycho Beach Party".

Wow! I'm really impressed. (You know I keep forgetting how long ago
some of the L&O eps were made!) Even at 23, she's one hell of an actress.
And, she can play young for a few years yet, she's got a very youthful look.

Now I wish we got Six Feet Under! ;-))

Wouldn't be the first time! LOL! If I had a nickle for every time I've
misread/misheard something I'd be . . . well, comfortable. ;-)

I don't remember seeing that one. I stopped watching for a while when
Angie first joined the cast, and of course if Skoda wasn't in it, I might
just have been in another room. ;-))

Actually, I didn't think she was convincing; more so than the girl that played
"Guinevere", but both were very overdone. I'm around retarded people quite a
bit, and the only actor I've ever seen really nail it was Leonardo DiCaprio in
"Gilbert Grape"!

The mother, "Ruth", from SIX FEET UNDER is most memorable for having played the
Dominatrix, Elizabeth Hendrix in the frist season in an Episode that mimicked
the killing of a model last name of Vesti by Bernard Le Geros who alleded he
did so at Andrew Crispo's say so, the controversial art dealer, who I believe
is in jail for threatening the life of a lawyer's child who was handling the
bankruptcy reorganization of his Gallery. Crispo, long known to be a "rough
Trade" kinda guy escaped prosecution in the Vesti murder despite some pretty
tantalizing evidence. See the book BAG OF TOYS, now out of print but easily
available on Half.com for the full story of the Vesti murder.

Oh, and I forgot to say . . . I liked her performance. She didn't
overplay it, in fact, considering what's usually on offer, I thought she was
respectfully subdued; going for simple rather than stereotype.

I've worked with developmentally challenged adults and youths and I
agree, it is almost impossible for actors to portray them even adequately.

The problem is there are many causes of developmental arrest and each
comes with a specific set of complications and characteristics. Too often
we see a kind of generic "retardation" (a term I don't like) enacted, where
certain physical traits are overblown by actors over and over again. Part
of it is the fault of writers who aren't specific about the cause of the
developmental disability they're writing about and its characteristics. But
actors who resort to the generic portrayal without really understanding the
almighty What, Why, and How of the character are responsible too.

I've seen a few memorable performances, but my absolute favorite was
Cliff Robertson in Charley.

I agree that she did an amazing job with that character, and with the
first one she did. Unfortunately, for me, I've not seen her in anything
else. I'm sure she's equally good in everything she does.

Maybe they'll have her back on L&O? Too bad they didn't think of her
for the new ADA? ;-)
