I taped the 1AM showing of the second part of L&O:CI.

This morning when I went to watch I only got the first few minutes. The
cable must have gone off.

Anyway I saw the cemetary funeral scene. The character Jeff Goldblum
plays was wearing a police uniform but Goren just wore a suit.

Was that proper attire? Though rarely seen don't all detectives have a
dress uniform?

They're supposed to. Perhaps Goren has put on a few pounds and it no longer
fits? :)

I think it is up to them. Here is a description of a real police
officer's funeral that of New York Police Department Police Officer
Omar Edwards who was killed on May 28th, 2009 (unfortunately it was
by friendly fire. He was mistaken for a perpetrator). The funeral was
held on June 4, 2009:

"Picture a sea of NYPD officers in the streets, lining the route
Jess casket is to take. As many as ten thousand strong, they are
five rows deep in places, turning out to catch one last glimpse of
their colleague. Each officer is decked out in his or her dress blue
uniform, complete with polished brass buttons and pure white gloves.
A group of Detectives can be seen standing separate from the main
crowd, dressed in suits and trench coats with their badges
prominently displayed."

So detectives could wear civilian clothes and not a dress uniform at
at least a patrol officer's funeral.

Of course I don't know for a fact if detectives are required to were
a full dress uniform at a Captain's funeral or not.

I think Goren didn't wear his is because he likes to walk to the beat
of his own drum. He isn't a uniform kind of guy no matter what the
regulations are. He chaffs under the chain of command even the
relatively loose one of a civilian police department (as compared to
the more rigorous one the military has) so it wouldn't be like him to
wear the uniform required or not. I could imagine Goren constantly
being cited for uniform violations when he was a beat cop, like not
having his shirt tucked in not wearing the uniform cap etc.
