I thought I heard Goren say that charismatics were boys in ancient Rome
who had been castrated.

Huh?

Charismatics are those xians who speak / babel in unknown tongues like
the holy rollers. !@#$%^&*()_+

You probably didn't. Castrati were boys in Rome who had been
castrated.

Though eunuchs were common in many cultures - Byzantium, Ottomans,
Imperial China etc. - I thought the "castrati" came about in the Baroque
era as church / choir singers.

I thought Goren said "ancient" Rome and he didn't mention singing.

In ancient Rome there were the "galli" the priests of Magna Mater the
Great Mother.

Actually he makes quite a few boobs. Remember that Goren is a
character. He is written by a writer and played by an actor. In one ep
he thought that a conman spoke with traces of cockney and Welsh accents.
Cockney comes from a small area of east London, and even many Englsih
people are confused about what it is and isn't. Anyway the character
spoke with an upper class accent which is not geographical. The writers
often show surprising erudition, but they do screw up sometimes.

I thought "Charismatics" was wrongly used there. I just read about
castrati. How sick is that?!

Very, but the guys involved do not, on the whole, seem to have been
unhappy. It got them a career, after all.

An interesting novel is "The Persian Boy" about Bagoas the favorite
eunuch of Alexander the Great.

But he didn't screw up here . Although the reference is rarely encountered , the arabs used to castrate boys to sell to the romans and they indeed called them charismatics .

I'm sure it's a rare reference. Where can I encounter it?

Does he mean the Arabs or the Romans? The root is Greek and, while
educated Romans understood Greek, Arabs of the time could hardly have
done so.

Which time? Why not? Wouldn't Greek have been a language of somewhat
common usage in the ancient Arab world. After all, the Greeks
occupied some of the Middle East It stands to reason that many Arabs
would have spoken Greek.

Arabs at the time were mainly bedouin.

They would have had some trade though. How did they communicate when
they were in town?

You did see Goren say that. Season 8, Episode 11. "Lady's Man"

Educated Arabs knew Greek. They translated the Ancient Greek philosophers to Arabic. In turn, hundreds of years later Europeans translated the Arabic to Latin and that is how Late medieval Europe got Plato and the gang.

Yes you did. You started it with a question about some bullshit Goren
was talking that seemed to confuse Charismatics with Castrasti. That
was a long time ago though.

Thanks! It must have been years ago then and someone dragged it up recently.

That was a bit surprising. Goren's flights into academia are usually
better researched, except for the fallacies about UK accents, but these
are universal in America, and pretty common in the UK itself.

Too funny, it's 2017 and I'm watching this episode. I went to look it up too. Charismatics is just another name for eunuchs. The rulers did this because the eunuchs were in charge of looking over and caring for the king's cuncubines. They didn't want the guys getting ideas. The king's had it wrong....it's not always about sex.

A Byzantine eunuch called Narses took over as a general at one point and
ran a successful campaign. He was in his eighties.

Here's a good book where Narses is mentioned. I've not read it for decades.
