If you were creating a compilation of the best sketch comedy ever to
appear on tv, what are some particular examples you would identify?
Not particular shows or "performance ensembles", just individual
sketches that you feel define what sketch comedy should be.
I am posting this to the following groups: snl, python, thestate, kids
in the hall, as well as alt.comedy.imrpov, and alt.simpsons,
alt.comedy, and alt.conan.
I guess I should only ask that you not be afraid to name something
outside of your usual favorite ensemble.
Thanks,
Mike.
P.S. - you can just identify the sketches by their title or simple
premise.

I know I already have way too much stuff listed for UCB (what can I say? It
was a great show) but I also have to add more 2 sketches:
"Color Blind" (with Amy Poehler as Gillian; probably one of the funniest
characters I've seen her do.)
and "Astronaut Racism" (Matt Besser stole this sketch as the redneck)
"THOR!" <almigh...@ohyeah.com> wrote in message

What about the flying simulator where Amy Poehler curses a blue streak,
another man (I suck with names) prays to the devil and yet another asks his
co-pilot to tweak his nipples during the flight...that killed me...and the
Charles Manson/Girl Scout skit...

Is this the one where Colbert has a long kiss with Dinello? "I couldn't find
the cat so I dressed up like a scarecrow!"
Another personal favorite of mine was when Paul Dinello was mocking Colbert
and Sedaris' baby: "Look at her, she's enormous!" and after an onslaught of
weight-related insults, the crib breaks. ROFL!!!

>The Merv Griffith Show,
I was talking about this skit with one of my best friends mere weeks ago.
This sketch is so brilliant, it's like being inside one of those Russian dolls

unflattering (what *was* the deal with the pillow down the pants, anyway?)

LOL I loved that "Pilot's Last Words" sketch, I forgot all about it, Matt
Besser was the one who turned into the devil worshipper in the matter of
seconds while in the planecrash simulator, and played that part hilariously.
Later in that same episode that devil pilot wrestled a crazed WWJD camp
counselor (played by Ian Roberts).. Speaking of which that episode had
another one of my favorites sketches: the WWJD/Bug Juice sketch.
I also loved the Girl Scout sketch, but I think you mean the Unibomber, not
Charles Manson. (with Matt Besser playing the Unibomber in an extremely
feminine manner.)
> Exit 57: Colbert and Sedaris as the strange parents,
> Is this the one where Colbert has a long kiss with Dinello? "I couldn't
find
> the cat so I dressed up like a scarecrow!"
I'm talking about the one where Colbert and Sedaris would make up all these
weird scenarios to their son (Paul) to make him feel sorry for leaving the
house. For example, they asked which parent he would save if both of them
were drowning. I think they had a catchphrase (I hate that word, but they
said it in all the skits) in it like, "Weeeeeeeellllllll...." Does this
sound familiar at all?
I can't really remember the above sketch you mentioned, it's been so long
since I've watched Exit 57, which is why I didn't list as many sketches for
it as I did for the others, because theres so many sketches I can't
remember. I should I have taped it while it was still on the air. Maybe CC
will bring back the reruns some day now that Stephen Colbert is pretty
popular on their channel; but it's not too likely.

speaking solely of "mad tv" (and pretty much ignoring the rest on the list)
they have definitely had their moments of excellence. their regular characters
are irritating as hell, but if you hold them up to something like the last
couple of years of SNL you can really see where SNL has fucked up. for example,
"mad tv's" spoof of "the west wing" last year was dead on brilliant. SNL's was
so lazy that if they didn't put the title up and spell out what the joke was,
you might not even know who the actors were supposed to be portraying. "mad tv"
isn't all that strong when it comes to creating their own things, but they have
enough respect for the things and the people that they're doing parodies of to
actually *understand* their subjects.
and maybe it's just me, but i never get tired of their randy newman bits.
> But I never really paid attention to it, this

and speaking of noggin (random rant, completely OT) not only are they fucking

aren't showing the final episode either. jesus, what is *wrong* with them?

i have this sick desire to see "fifteen", actually. i keep thinking that that
would make a nice show to air between P&P and "clarissa...".
actually, i wish noggin would have, maybe, a rotating time slot or try some
variety in their nighttime lineup and try airing some shows like that and
"welcome freshman" and "you can't do that on tv", etc. i don't think shows like
"out of control" or even "turkey tv" (which wasn't that good in spite of my

perfect for noggin's primetime/late night lineup.

it's a digital channel that specializes in old nickelodeon and public
