Since AOL won't let me send any goddam mail, I'm going to post this here so the
one or two people I was going to send it to will read it, along with a WHOLE
bunch of people I wasn't going to send it to who will just click "next" (unless
they, too, are bored.)

Hi. I'm bored. I'm really, really bored. I did a search for surrealist word
games on the web and found this:

How to make a Dadaist Poem
(method of Tristan Tzara)

To make a Dadaist poem:

Take a newspaper.
Take a pair of scissors.
Choose an article as long as you are planning to make your poem.
Cut out the article.
Then cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them in
a bag.
Shake it gently.
Then take out the scraps one after the other in the order in which they
left the bag.
Copy conscientiously.
The poem will be like you.
And here you are a writer, infinitely original and endowed with a
sensibility that is charming though beyond the understanding of the
vulgar.

---

This is the best one I came up with (some advice, try to alternate taking out
little tiny words with big ones, or you'll end up with sentences with a lot of
"to and of the a are a" at the end of your poems.)

Anyhow:

Reservations advised independence, the great
By commitment. The excellence provides their immediately secure innovators.
The strangely revealed presents product of a winter...
Heroism to both retrospective government,
To everyday calling and cornerstone modernism,
Our service this of one.
An artist in of this.

I added the spacing and punctuation to make it more palatable. <g>

Oh jeez. Okay. I spent 3 hours cutting up words - I changed the rules a bit. I
cut up a bunch of articles etc, put them in a tiny box.

As I was waiting 10 minutes for AOL to connect <grr> I came up with some gems:

Complete telephone symptoms for inches, thighs, except provinces opening
population.

Manipulative guest daughter, scorching was taste of wine that efforts itself,
that's Paula, son.

Lobbies sex the life but take people's settings.

Celebrate the underdog taste who braces registration.

If it made sense...it wasn't dada. Now take a civil comlaint for the state
of Indiana....THAT'S dada in the extreme.

Sorry gang, one of our Indiana attorneys just quit and I'm getting a crash
course in Hoosier Law. Ugh....My brain hurts!!!

I'm a bit late on this thread, but just about a week ago Bravo did this whole
profile thing on David Bowie. He explained that this Dadist method of creating
poetry is how he comes up with a lot of his songs. There was a clip of him
from the late 70's or so, demonstrating for an interviewer how he does this -
he was cutting lines from a newspaper, putting it in a plastic bag, etc. Then
it cut back to the recent interview with him, where he explained that he still
does this(showing Hallo Spaceboy) but a friend designed a computer program that
does this for him to make it easier than cutting up newspapers. Just though
I'd share :)

I saw that too! DB is intriguing . . . he kinda scares me, and I like
that. ;)

Cut-and-paste is a fun way to write. I think William Burroughs was one
of the first people to try this technique. . . There's a Burroughs
website somewhere with a cut-and-paste generator. You enter your words,
and it re-processes them and spits them back out. It's given me some
pretty crazy-ass stuff. I recommend it to all you tortured geniuses.

...and idea he got from Brian Eno, producer of _Low_, _Heroes_ and (I
think) _Lodger_. Eno describes it in his book...the title of which escapes me.
I do hope Master Bowie gave credit where it was due (he does seem like the kind
who would, but looks can be deceiving).
