So, Keiko Saito in anime? The US anime distributor, AnimEigo, has
recently released the early-80s anime series Macross as a DVD box set
(Macross was re-edited into the first third of the American cartoon
Robotech). In episode 18 of Macross, "Pineapple Salad," a sign on one
of the businesses along a street is translated as reading "Keiko
Saitoh".
I asked the folks at AnimEigo who or what Keiko Saitoh was back in
1982 (when Macross was being made), and went on to say that the only
person by that name I knew of was the guest judge on Iron Chef.
Their lead translator replied that it is indeed a reference to the
same person. It seems that back in the early '80s, Keiko Saito was a
poster girl for Japan Airlines, and from there went on to be an idol
star!

So that was Keiko Saito? Wow...who knew 20 yrs later she'd pop up
again on IC?

I remember that, too. And I think she was about 20 in 1980....
While back in Japan last week, I saw a cooking/spa program where people
talked about visiting a country inn/spa and eating some good food. Keiko
Saito-san was there. She's alive and well, dressed in Kimono and looked
beautiful. Oh, her hair was brown and she wore glasses. There were a few
guests but another notable was Hattori-sensei (in his black jacket).
Sorry, I did not have access to a videomachine......
Another show I really botched was a cooking show, "Iron Chefs visit
SouthEast Asia". Three Iron Chefs (Michiba-san, Chen-san, and Sakai-san)
went to Viet Nam, Thialand etc, and they tried local dishes. Funny thing
is (a) It was done by Asahi TV (not Fuji TV) and (b) in Japan, people
still consider Michiba-san as "THE Japanese Iron Chef". I wish I had
caught that one.....
Cheers

IIRC, we saw her a few times wearing glasses on IC, particularly when
they showed the commentators while cooking was going on.

Interesting. Was this program promoting visiting those kinds of places
for vacations and such?

Rats! But welcome back anyway, Chief.

Were Chen, Michiba and Sakai identified as Iron Chefs in the show? I'd
think there'd be rights issues involved if they were. Of course, if Asahi
paid Fuji enough.....
