Speaking of Orbach, his reaction to his daughter's murder really rang
true tonight. If you watch his reaction, he loses his balance the way
someone who's just received traumatic news would. He's one more
reason why that show continues to be outstanding.

I haven't been following it this year. There seems to be a lot more
personal stuff going on. I had it on tonight, but more as background
noise. I lurked the L&O ng, and the big question seems to be: Is anyone
coming back next year?
Lynn
Yep! Looks like I'll have to start watching L&O again; I knew Briscoe had a
daughter, but I'd missed the whole druggie nurse storyline. It's a tribute to
Orbach, though, that even though I didn't know how or what was going on with her I
was devastated at his reaction to her death. He'd fit in fine at 'Homicide',
although I don't suppose he wants to leave NYC. He does theatrical benefits and
stuff occasionally and he's happy to be part of the theatre crowd.

I've heard Lowell and maybe Bratt are gone...interesting, there's
been a lot of talk of Chris Noth maybe joining the cast of HLOTS as
Logan or even as a new character. Maybe he and Briscoe could
be a new pair.
Seriously, might there be any possibility that Noth, at least,
would joing our crew? It's not like he's been getting all
these great film roles. Anyone know why he left L&O
(I hear he was fired.)

Even though that scene initially struck me as mildly obvious, the
way it was done made it one of the finest moments I've seen on
television this year (perhaps in several years). To be fair, the
entire ep was strong and probably had a lot to do with creating
a mind-frame that enhanced the final scene, but, even in isolation
the scene is a gem. The entertainment industry often does a very, very
poor job of portraying death and grief, which is, IMHO, nearly
pornographic. The exceptions are rare, but this one was stellar. I
hope that L&O will gives us some glimpses of Briscoe's grief over
time.
Of course, L&O has been through numerous cast and character changes
over the years, and has rarely produced lemons. Like many people,
I grumbled when Chris Noth was replaced by the (somewhat Falsone-like)
Benjamin Bratt, and I wasn't immediately charmed by Sam Waterston (I
admit I was tickled to see J.K. Simmons back as Dr. Emil Skoda). In
the end, though, this program is an amazing ensemble work.

If Bratt leaves, I'll start watching again. Bratt and Lowell are the two
characters I can't stand. None of the other cast changes ever bothered me,
but these two made both the "law" and the "order" unwatchable.

I think "all the talk" has been on ngs, tho. I haven't read anything
"official". NYPD fans want him to replace Smits, too.

It was time to renew his contract; he wanted a raise; the next thing he
knew - unemployment line. I think the official line was, he just got
caught up in the normal turnover.
Lynn
BTW. What's the address for the L&O ng? Thanks.

I am used to seeing Orbach's stellar turns in live theatre. That he can
transfer to the small screen and be so affecting in a different style says to
me that he is one of the rare breed to which Braugher belongs: not just a good
actor, but a great one.

Yeah. And then Frank could go back to New York. He and Logan could pass
each other in the train station and do a reverse version of their Baltimore
vs. NYC argument.
Maybe they could do that backwards recording trick like in Twin Peaks. David
Lynch could direct, and Falsone could be the midget...
Not that it would have ever fit the H:LOTS "world", but I would love to have
seen David Lynch write/direct a first season episode. With that cast? That
would make a killer episode of *something*.

wow. lucky you. and I'm right there with you on lovin' this man! I keep
hoping that the day when I finally get to meet him I won't be so
tongue-tied as I was when I saw Nathan Lane and Chris Noth. Jerry Orbach
is the definition of cool. and he's a pretty good singer too.

Wonderful. I'm glad I'm old enough to have seen Orbach as the original 'El
Gallo' in The Fantasticks; I've even got the original LP* of the show. One of
the character's songs is "Rape"...controversial even in its time....and Jerry
is sarcastically brilliant in its delivery. The show is still running, some 35
years later, off-Broadway....but I don't think I'd want to see it again without
J.O.

Hum... I was actually thinking of him as Munch's new partner! That
would be an interesting challenge for the writers, and we might recover
some of the Munch from the Bolander days.

I agree, they have reduced Munch to not much more than comic relief. I am
trying to think of some scenes when Munch has a suspect in the box, I
can't. I know there must be some. Probably when his old girlfriend got
killed. Hell, you hardly ever see Munch working on a case. They have
really let his character go. WE DEMAND MORE AND BETTER QUALITY MUNCH
TIME!!.
You want to show your age? Be like me and call the place where one purchases
CDs a "record store". It kind of fun to say it to young'uns--they have no
idea what you're talking about. But really, what are you supposed to call
them? To me, "CD store" doesn't roll off the tongue, and "music store" is
where you buy sheet music.

You *really* want to show your age? Call then "albums." This dates back to
the days of 78s, which had a very short playing time (3-5 minutes each).
For a long work like a symphony you needed perhaps half a dozen records.
These came in large bound books with a separate sleeve for each record, just
like a photo album, hence the name. Even when LPs came along, with just a
simple cardboard sleeve, the name stuck.
Enough OT. Now back to Homicide! (Did you know there's a book...?)

albums.
oh, you mean those big black CDs???? and how young are you that you are
too young to know this stuff???
