Various sources have reported that NBC has chosen to not renew Melissa Leo
and Max Perlich's contracts, possibly because of their off-screen
exploits.

Leo is unhappy about the decision, and has said so publicly. _The
Hollywood Reporter_ reports that Perlich's manager calls it "a mutual
situation" (but, as we all know, it's *always* mutual).

This possibility has apparently been rumored for quite some time. In an
_NYPD Blue_ Summary/Review in the end of April, Alan made a reference that
Leo was in a similar boat to _Animal House_'s Delta House.

Well done NBC! Underutilize and piss off your (probably) most talented
actress so that you can promote two other actresses you brought on later,
both of whom are (somewhat) less talented (but more attractive).

How I mentioned how *much* I love NBC recently?... <sarcasm off>

As for Perlich, the show will do fine without him.

I agree 100%. Just another case of the system screwing the victim. However,
I'm shocked that anyone would expect any sign of intelligence from network
suits.

Two actresses? Is Isabella Hoffman rejoining the series?

Better than with him, as far as I can see. Wonder if they'll write
Brodie out in a fatal manner...

You are so so correct, Ian. I am still dumbfounded by this particular move
... I am very thankful that we've just begun Season 4 downunder, so we still
get the next two seasons' worth of Leo+Braugher (my votes for the top actors
working on the tube currently). I am frustrated beyond words.

Our luck: In a really badly written exposition scene, Gee tells Gaffney
and Barnfather how Howard and Brodie ran off together. To France. After
she was suspended over "an incident." And they took The Dog with them.

But then Kay woke up, realized what she'd done, and committed suicide.

Only Meldrick doesn't believe it was suicide.

No, it was a reference to Brodie's nemesis Alan Schack ("Valentine's
Day"), played by Neil Patrick Harris who is best known for his lead
role in the erstwhile show "Doogie Howser, M.D.".

Although I appreciate the reinterpretation of Falsone's name
... :-)...,
"Doogie Howser" was a TV series about a child prodigy who went
through medical school and became a doctor when only a teen.
It starred the actor Neil Patrick Harris, who I think went on
to guest star in a particularly awful episode of H:LoTs. I don't
remember the episode title or the plot, exactly. Anybody want
to help out?...

In the episode, which aired on 14 Feb and was called "Valentine's
Day", Neil Patrick Harris played a killer who Brodie knew from
school. At one point in the episode, Brodie was attacked by an
unknown assailant; Harris's character was implicated/suspected
in the attack.

No wonder. Since when has being the victim in a criminal case -- one
that resulted in a successful conviction -- been considered an exploit?
Did NBC expect Leo to keep quiet and not make waves when she felt she was
being stalked? Did they think the publicity somehow *negatively* affected
HOMICIDE's ratings? If anything, it probably drew the attention of casual
viewers who don't normally watch, but who might have tuned in out of morbid
curiousity after seeing coverage of her case on ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT et al.
Even if the story had reflected badly on Leo -- which it did not --
that kind of notoriety could only *help* the show's ratings.

>Well done NBC! Underutilize and piss off your (probably) most talented

More attractive? Imho, as well as perhaps being more talented, Leo is
also better-looking and more attractive than either Hoffman or Forbes
(though perhaps not Pembleton's/Braugher's wife ;-). Maybe she's unfairly
handicapped by the fact that her character isn't into wearing makeup?

>How I mentioned how *much* I love NBC recently?... <sarcasm off>

Well, I did like that "documentary" episode ... ;-)

Just a guess, but I remeber hearing about Max Pearl getting arrested for
discharging a firearm and posession of pot earlier this year. I don't
know if there has been any resolution to that problem.

As for Leo, she has been having a lot of difficulty with her ex, John
Hurt (stalking,etc.). Maybe she wants to get out of the limelight for a
while.

The conversation at the end of last night's ep. betw. Frank and Tim was
one of the most memorable ever. Chills and goosebumps all at the same
time. But it once again called to mind the fact that the '95 season was
absolutely stellar. God-there were just so many good eps. that year
-Sniper and A Doll's Eyes, The Hat and The Wedding. This doesn't negate
the fact that the very early eps. with Crosetti et. al. weren't great but
somehow 95 just picked up with themes and dialogue that felt so solid.
Seven more left on Lifetime to the season. I'm feeling sad already.

Max Perlich recently had his charge dismised on a technicality--I cannot
recall the specifics.

That may well be. Although he was convicted, it was for a misdemeanor.
His post-trial comments on TV news reflected no remorse and little
insight into his own behavior. I think he would contemplate doing it
again, and she may have sensed this. Getting out of Baltimore, to
something closer to a safehouse than is possible for a memebr of the
cast of a baltimore-based show, would be a wise move for her in the long
run. She can get work, as she is a good actress, and will be a safer
not tied to one known city.
