HLOTS *may* get a best series nomination (maybe the nom
that usually goes to NYPD Blue? ER, X files, or Law & Order
won't lose the noms - though there's the Ally factor. Depends
on if they decide that's a drama or a comedy). I doubt it will
win, but the recognition would be nice.

Braugher will get a best actor nomination - he may even win
if the academy's thoroughly sick of picking Dennis Franz
every year. Personally, based on this season alone, I think
Anthony Edwards should win this award, mainly Andre
really hasn't gotten enough screentime - but he's had
some flashy moments (Subway, Mercy, the end, it looks like)
and besides, he deserves it if only as a lifetime achievement.

Should get *one* slot for best supporting actor - up in
the air b/t Diamond and Secor.
Diamond deserves it just because Secor hasn't had a helluva
lot to do. Don't be incredibly surprised, though, if it's Seda.
Whoever it is probably won't win, but it'll be nice anyway
(unless it's Seda, in which case Secor, Johnson, and Diamond
should kill him.)

Best guest star - either Durning or D'onofrio, probably the
latter, who I think will probably win, though I don't have
a good idea of what the competition would be like.

Best episode/writing - I think "Subway" has an excellent
chance of winning this.

Carrie Pruett wrote , predicting a whole slew of Emmy nominations, from best
series, to best actor (for Braugher), best supporting actor (Diamond, Secor
or Seda), best guest star (Durning or D'Onofrio) and writing (Subway)

Don't hold your breath, Carrie. While I agree with you that most of these
are _deserved_, I'll be surprised on H:LotS gets that many nominations.
I'll, frankly, be happy with just a couple of well-deserved ones -- well,
not happy, but I'll take what we can get. After this many years of ignoring
TBDSOTV, I seriously doubt if the Academy will suddenly wake up and start
handing out kudos all over the place to the show.

But, as Dennis Miller says, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Yes, but considering the perverse nature of the universe and the fact that Our
Show sucked the scrotum off a dog for most of the year, I'd be willing to lay
odds on it*.

Speaking of awards, if you want to fly your fanboy/girl colors,
you might be interested in in submitting nominations to
rec.arts.tv's annual Ratty Awards. If so, go to

, where you'll find a list of the categories and the address to send them to.
Please be a lamb and don't send them more than one set of nominations per
person.

Carrie's Emmy predictions, while well-thought-out and certainly well-deserved,
I'm afraid probably won't happen. I know Academy members who vote year after
year after year for H:LOTS in as many categories as possible, and every year,
not a single one of their votes results in an actual nomination. There was an
article last year that speculated that one of H:LOTS' problems in getting
nominations is that it is shot in Baltimore. This means that there isn't a lot
of schmoozing Academy members, and most of the crew is from Baltimore rather
than Hollywood. Both of these factors cut a great deal into H:LOTS chances of
getting nominated. But if anything does it this year, it will be the Subway
episode.

I'd be willing to bet that the only sure nomination will be Durning for guest
actor, based on large part by the Academy's recognition of him.

I'll be shocked as hell if it gets even one -- we have six seasons or
precedent established that it gets virtually ignored. Don't see why
this season, its weakest ever overall, should be the exception.

I view this season as better than the 5th, but worse than the 4th.
The 4th, at the time, was the weakest of the seasons aired. Of
course, I could be wrong. I'm not, but I could be.

Dave Locke graced us with a brief critique:

>The 4th, at the time, was the weakest of the seasons aired. Of

I'm inclined to say that the sixth season sucked more. The fifth season,
while weaker than most, still had a pretty good handful of worthwhile episodes:

"Kaddish"
"Prison Riot"
"The Heart of Saturday Night"
"The Documentary"
"Control"
"Blood Wedding"

A similar list for season 6 would be much smaller, I think. Plus, season 5
didn't contain a similar bludgeoning of the audience with Falsone -- boy wonder
detective, nor the antics of poor writing and acting we've seen with Ballard.

Of course, comparing season 5 to season 6 is on the same plane as comparing a
tax audit to a tooth extraction, so this commentary is probably worth about as
much as the time it took to type it.

hrm, I seem to recall Andre Braugher getting one Emmy nod and the other
acting Emmy nod going to Robin Williams. I guess the rest of the cast
just sucks compared to Jimmy Smits and Dennis Franz. pardon me while I
hurl in the direction of Anthony Edwards for winning the Golden Globe this
year when it clearly should have gone to Andre.

That was one nomination, in 96 as I recall. Sadly, and quite unjustly, no Emmy.

To be honest, only a fool would bet against Dennis Franz winning the Emmy,
especially this season.

I don't know. With this last L&O Jerry Orbach may just be in the running.

Orbach's performance is good, but they won't deny Franz the award for his
performance as a prostate cancer victim. My predictions for this category
are:
Sam Watterson
Dennis Franz
Jimmy Smits
Anthony Edwards
David Duchovny
