Elkton, Ohio police need your help in tracking down two prison escapees:
Rafael Herrera, 53, and Juan Gonzales-Valencia, 30. The inmates escaped
from the Federal Correctional Institution in Elkton (eastern Ohio)
Saturday, July 21 around 7 p.m., acting warden Mary Anne Varner said in
a news conference. The minimum-security prison houses about 2400 inmates
and is situated in Columbiana County, 20 miles south of Youngstown.
Varner says Herrera and Gonzales-Valencia broke through a fence in the
complex next to the main prison building. She did not state how they
made it through the fence. Herrera and Gonzales-Valencia are both
Mexican nationals with addresses in the United States. Herrera (of
Chicago, IL) was serving a 20-year sentence for conspiracy with intent
to distribute cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. His projected release date
was December 20, 2006. Gonzales-Valencia (of Fresno, CA) was sentenced
to ten years and one month for conspiracy to manufacture and distribute
and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. His projected
release date was November 26, 2007.
When Federal authorities discovered the two men were missing, they
notified local and state law enforcement agencies. State Highway Patrol
troopers and helicopters searched both land and air and were at a
dead-end in the search, until a neighbor of the federal prison provided
a crucial clue. The neighbor says she recently saw a strange woman in
the area, a woman later identified as the girlfriend of escapee Juan
Gonzales-Valencia. According to the US Marshals Service, Lorena
Briseno-Solorio, 24, and her son visited the prison July 21, the very
same day Gonzales-Valencia and Herrera escaped from the Federal
Correctional Institution. Authorities say the toddler's father is Juan
Gonzales-Valencia.
Investigators say the four may have left Elkton that day in a burgundy
or maroon 1989 Buick Electra with Washington state plates, a car
matching the description of a rental vehicle overdue at the Pittsburgh
airport. They speculate the group is probably on its way to the Chicago
metropolitan area and ultimately the Mexican border. Authorities do not
know the toddler's name, although he stands out because he supposedly
wears several necklaces and bracelets. Briseno-Solorio is five feet, six
inches tall and 140 pounds. Gonzales-Valencia is five feet, six inches
tall and 190 pounds. Herrera is five feet, seven inches tall and 170
pounds. Investigators have not determined if the four people-Herrera,
Gonzales-Valencia, Briseno-Solorio, and the toddler- are still together.
