Glen here...
VALEENA just sent in this brief message about NBC's under appreciated
Homicide.
Despite the general perception (and all but forgone conclusion) that
Homicide would
end its run at the conclusion of this season, there have been many rumors
scurrying about suggesting
that somehow...in some way...the series might "go on".
Well, Valeena's message doesn't make that prospect look too hopeful. Seems
Valeena went to an establishment frequently used for location shooting on
the series, and here's what she had to say:
This may or may not constitute "news" over on Ain't it Cool, but I was in
Fells Point yesterday and dropped in at the Waterfront Bar to grab an Anchor
Steam on tap.</I>
All of the overhead gaffer's piping that's been mounted in the ceiling of
the bar lo these many years has been removed.
I asked the bartender what was up, and he said that they've not only
completed filming of the series for the season (maybe forever), but that
he'd seen the final script and it "sort of wrapped the series up.
I asked him if he knew whether that meant the series was definitely NOT
going to be picked up for another season and he said that while he didn't
want to "pee in anyone's beer," (thank goodness for that!),
things didn't look good so far as he knew.
Since all those mounts for cameras and lights had been up on the ceiling for
so long - even tho'
they only shot in the Waterfront on occasion - I think that their removal
is a Very Bad Sign for the most intelligent series on TV...

I watched several iterations of a scene being filmed at the Waterfront
a couple weeks ago. I got the impression the crew won't miss the place
much if "the show must go on." It was *freezing* in there (admittedly
it was unusually chilly outside, too ... ), and the place was shabby
and dirty (Let's just say I cringe to think when may have been the last
time the kitchen was graced with a visit from a health inspector ...)
One of the guys on the crew said the place had rats as big as
Ballar .... I mean chihuahuas. He said the ceiling panels would bend
when the rats ran through the ceiling. And supposedly the first several
feet of the front part of the building has no real structural support
(the building originates back to about 1781, I think ...) In between
one take I joked with the guy about, after all these seasons, the whole
thing collapsing when the director yelled the last "Cut!"
I do think the place was great as a setting for the detectives bar,
though. I always figured three guys on detectives' salaries (suspending
belief in the process that cops would even be *allowed* to own a bar
...)
probably weren't going to be able to afford to invest in some chi-chi
bar in some swanky part of town. So in that sense, it all worked for me.
Possible spoilers .... if you don't want to know any theories about
what might happen if, or if not, there is another season, don't scroll
down or read any farther!

The episode for which I watched some of the filming was probably the
last ep for this season. It seemed like they set things up (as far as
the Waterfront storyline) so that things could go either way ... it
could work as a series-ender, or, if there's another new season, it
could be written into the new episodes that the detectives had lost
their ownership of the bar because it never brought in enough business
or revenue. Just my personal observations and resulting impressions ...
Several of the crew members did holler a hearty "Good-BYE, Waterfront!"
when the filming inside was finished. (Was it Mark Twain who wrote about
a little girl moving from her home town saying, "Goodbye, God -- I'm
leaving Missouri." <Or was it "going to" ... or some other place ...
I really can't remember ...> Only Twain wasn't sure if she instead had
said, "Good!! By God, I'm leaving Missouri!" ... <tee-hee> ... )

That's very close to being interesting. I also recall this 12/20/97
post in here concerning the bartender at the Waterfront and how the
show wouldn't be renewed for a 7th season:

Unreal. the guy is Data....12/20/97 indeed...
I recall a post here on, ummm, not too long ago, that mentioned The
Waterfornt being sold, which indeed it was. Another post has
negotiations between Hlots and The Planet Hollywood in Balmer for a
recurring shoot site. Some scuttlebutt has The Waterfront people and the
show's people at odds over a money issue, and I was told that that was
the main reason why the crew stopped hanging out there, and switched to
Koopers...
so who knows whats goin on. i just sit and wait for word...

Hey, knock it off... I remembered the bartender giving tales of doom
to the tourists about the 6th season being the last. One click gives
me my browser, another gives me DejaNews, I type in "Waterfront bar"
and "bartender", and "alt.tv.homicide" and my email address, and there
it is... One more click gives me the above shortened "bookmarkable"
URL. Elapsed time, fifteen seconds.
It really is amazing what you can do with Web resources, and how
quickly...

Wouldn't all the piping have been removed because the bar had been sold?
And that was why there was talk about Planet Hollywood?
Or did I miss something again...

Yup.

Ayuh.

Nope, you've been paying attention real good...
During my recent visit to Fells Point, I spent a LOT of time both in
front of and behind the bar at The Waterfront (don't ask).
As of March 13, 1999 The Waterfront still belonged to Gene and Chet, but
they had an "understanding" with a young man named David about
purchasing the bar.
I was actuallly in the bar when the techs came to remove the lighting
rig. This was done to accommodate a number of renovations the new owner
is planning, among them, a new tin ceiling.
Up to the time I left, the new owner had not heard from the Homicide
folks about whether they would be using the bar next season. Everyone I
spoke to from the crew, production staff, and cast seemed confident
that the show would be renewed. I also eavesdropped on a number of
conversations. None of them contradicted what I'd been told.
If the sale of The Waterfront does go through, TPTB are going to have to
do some fast writing if they are to explain how the bar's fictional
owners managed to pay for all the renovations, given the establishment's
shaky financial state.
So, now you know.

My guess is, when Lewis told Kellerman that the bar was eating up
every extra cent he had, that was a set-up for the downfall. If they
don't actually show the bar being closed this year, it'll be mentioned
in the first episode of SEASON 8!!!!!!!!!
Oops. 'Scuse me. Got a little <<sniff>> carried away there. Anyway,
they wouldn't have to show the interior at all. Wish NBC would tell
us what they've decided. I can't believe another sweeps month will
make a difference.

Hey! I know you! We were the other people hanging around the kitchen
that night. And yes, we did hear the rats scurrying around overhead. As
I recall, the owner said it was his last night, they had signed the
paperwork over that day.

It was the last episode of the season being filmed, and I have a call
sheet from the last few scenes of the episode. I don't see anything in
it that makes me think the guys are losing the bar, nor that it is the
last episode of forever, rather than just the season. Now, Tim is
another question, but that's a spoiler for a different post.

They're also going to have to do some fast writing to explain how they
manage to renovate the bar, given that it's a historical landmark. (Has
any more been made of this, or have I just not been paying attention since
"Every Mother's Son"? It *was* declared a historical landmark, right?)

Maybe they'll go for a night club with Hip Hop music :-)
