The fact that you referred to Barnfather as a "suckass bureaucrat" tends to
validate a need to keep him on the show. Sorta like the man you love to
hate. Bureaucrats are a sad fact of life in the criminal justice system,
and I kinda liked the way G blew up at him on last night's episode.

No, I don't love to hate Falsone...I just hate him. There's a difference.

COL. (Chuckling out loud) When I first joined this group, I made a
comment that I liked all the actors except the one who plays
Barnfather. I got an e-mail from another ath-er who asked if I wasn't
confusing the actor with the character; and, of course, I was.

I love Clayton; hate George(?). Unfortunately, I hate Seda in the
Falsone roll. No enjoyment whatsoever.

The interesting thing about Barnfather is he's fickle. A lot of the time
he holds the land-speed record for being a prick, but now and again he
does something that casts him in a slightly more sympathetic life. I
actually like characters like this.

Gaffney, OTOH ... well, short of the squad discovering he shot Gordon
Pratt, I'm not sure there's much that would make me stop wanting to see
that character get hit by a threshing machine. If this is the last season,
ol' Rog needs to get his comeuppance. Maybe bring down what's-his-name, Al
Freeman's character, with him.

And Falsone ... spit.

IF the Capt place was to be given to Al... then Gaffney would be colonel
right? Now this would spread huge problems with the Detectives.

Actually, Gee was offered the position of captain of the Property Crimes
division; presumably, Gaffney would remain captain of Crimes Against
Persons. (I may have the division names a little off, but AFAIK they are
separate.)

Definitely. I loved the episode where he was held hostage and was all
tied up.

This is definitely OT, but what is it with unit names in police
departments? My favorite is from 'NYPD Blue'- the unit upstairs from the
15th Squad Detectives is the 'Anti- Crime" unit. I thought that was the
point to the whole Police Department...

the next time you feel the need to utter such nonsense, make sure that I
don't end up reading it, b/c I'm very close to reaching through my
computer and strangling you. Barnfather is an asshole, but quite
necessary to the show. he also happens to be one of my favorite
characters so I'm probably a bit biased in my opinion. Gaffney, OTOH,
could take a flying leap....preferably taking Dullzone with him. and
maybe Gee, Jr. and the BBQ.....

Both the Barnfather and the Gaffney characters are assholes, and meant
to be, but the only believable one to me is Gaffney. I've never felt
that Clayton LeBouef was believable in the Barnfather role. A quick
check of DejaNews shows I've been occasionally bitching about that as
far back as 1996...

I, what's the term...."love to hate" Gaffney. He's a great villian, very funny,
and a better actor than the Frightening Four combined. Gaffney is also a good
foil for Gee, his "I haven't taken my happy pills today Al" is one of my
favorite season 4 lines.

yes, you're right. unlike some of the other distasteful characters on
H:LOTS, Gaffney is just a joy to hate. of course, I'm beginning to think
that an episode where the detectives have to investigate his murder might
be interesting. oh wait....would they even bother to investigate? it
would be the first unsolved poh-leece shooting in BPD history.

now don't get me started on that other comment about Barnfather and
bondage. *doh!*

Season 7 Homicide: Meldrick would agree with you, Falsone would whine to Gee
that every murder deserves investigation, Sheppard would attack the squad for
being anti-Irish, Ballard would roll her eyes, Gharty would drink a few in
honor of his memory, Munch, he'd give the token mention of Homicide history by
saying Gaffney was a bastard, and a lousy detective. Bayliss, he'd wander into
the squadroom for a few seconds, hand someone a piece of paper, then vanish.

Falsone\Stivers solve the murder, in a two minute music montage (probably using
the music of Matchbox 20 or another pop group). The killer: Gee Jr. He had to
do something to have a purpose on the show. The murder will be solved in the
last few minutes of the show, and comletely forgotten by the next week.

I've always found Barnfather to be a very interesting character. He's
one for whom playing the politics of the department comes first. When
it won't hurt him, he might be willing to give some help (see during
the shooting a few seasons ago), but all that comes secondary to
maintaining his position. The fact that he's a suckass bureaucrat is
exactly why they need to keep him - because Homicide is closer to
reality than most cop shows go, and a lot of people in the real world
are "suckasses" concerned primarily with their own station.

Gaffney's good because he was promoted primarily to make a point. He
knows at some level that he is manifestly unqualified for the position
he's in, so he tries to fake competence by being an a**hole to
everyone under him.

Barnfather is the man to hate, and he is well cast as the total "prick".
The bureaucrat
is needed to counterpoint the gritty "reality" of the rest of the
characters.

My favorite scene was 2? years ago, when he was held hostage. Finally
released
and none other than G {painfully} rips the duct tape from his mouth. I
Laughed so hard...
Would not have been so funny had he had any compassionate qualities...
