Bob Crane quit his DJ job at radio station KNX to become a regular on The Donna Reed Show fifty years ago today on July 22, 1963. When that series ended he immediately got the role as Colonel Robert Hogan on 168 episodes of Hogan's Heroes!

Not quite. The Donna Reed Show ran until 1966. Crane's character had
been getting more popular and his agent wanted more money. Crane and the
producer often argued, making headlines in the press. Crane was also
tired of the "nice guy" role. Ultimately, Crane left before the final
season.

Also, he did not give up the radio job when he started with The Donna
Reed Show. He left when he started Hogan's Heroes.
