You untrusting people doubt the trustworthyness of the Lovely Amanda?!?! I
am shocked and apalled! ;)
Amanda provides comic relief to DM. Without her, he may get staid and a
little to holy. Because Amanda is so crass, so double crossing, and not
preciously beautiful, she proves that DM has a wicked side, too.
Can you imagine how dull the show would be if Tessa and DM were saying *I
love you* every ep and Tessa getting kidnapped over and over again?
Personally I also think Amanda is way more beautiful than Tessa (as
irrelevant as that may be) Amanda appeals to me so much and I don't
know why. She's the kind of woman I see and think "I wish I could be
like that." (except for the felony stuff. :) )
Andrea
I used to think Amanda was not attractive either. It wasn't until the
white hair episode (Chimmole) that I realized how sexy she can be. I've
always liked her personallity though.
No question Tessa is more beautiful and sexy than Amanda with or without
white hair.

Hey I think that the Amanda character is one of the best on the show. I
thinks she is quite sexy and very classy. (Then again it's because I
used to know a girl just like Amanda. Call me a masochist.)
Granted, I'm a relative newbie, but I just don't like Tessa, she
irritates me. Amanda, however, cracks me up. She's a strong woman and
doesn't need Duncan to rescue her all the time.

I've been avoiding this topic, but now I just have to jump in.
Amanda is attractive (Duncan certainly thinks so).
Amanda is very intelligent. A good cat burgler would have to be. Also
the fact that she's stayed alive for something like 1100 years proves
she's intelligent--can't survive that long being stupid. This is the
one reason that I also admire Kenny--he's a mean little kid, but he's
survived against the odds.
As for being crass, I don't think so.

Excuse me??? Amanda only shows up to see Duncan when she's in trouble and
needs to hide behind his back. Granted she is strong and ruthless and I
agree, she does provide some comic relief to keep Duncan from being too
perfect. After all, in the flashbacks those two seem to have a rollicking
good time together. Just when things are getting quiet with Duncan and
his life seems to be coasting along, Amanda shows up and Bang! Trouble.
That's why he's always so hesitant when she shows up -- he knows there are
clouds on the horizon. But, did you notice? He always seems quite eager
for those clouds. Amanda is attractive to Duncan for all those reasons.
What I don't get is, in the flashbacks Amanda seems to be so capable.
Like in Turkey during the flashback in Finale Part 2. She was doing a
darn good job of keeping up her end of the fight. Why is it that in the
current time scenes she seems so dependent on Duncan. I wish they'd let
her be a little bit more capable. After all, she didn't live to be over
1,000 hiding behind Duncan all the time.
Not, mind you, that I would mind hiding behind Duncan. In fact, if I
could get there, I'd stay there.
Sorry, I know some of you are tired of Duncan's butt. I'll stop. Maybe,
someday, possibly.

If you're suggesting that Tessa wasn't stong, I'd have to disagree.
Remember that "I'll give you a facial you'll never forget" line? Amanda,
being an immortal had to learn how to fight. But, Tessa was pretty spunky,
too. And it seems to me that Duncan has had to recue Amanda( usually from
herself / situations she's gotten herself into).
I think they're both great characters, just different.
Dooh1.
Amanda, on the other hand, is someone Duncan truly loves and is very
attracted to, but shares opposite interests with. Duncan has time and
again shown his loyalty to Amanda, but I think that they are so
different in their needs that they can only tolerate short bursts of
"togetherness." If they hooked up permanently they would end up arguing
and hating each other, thus spoiling a great relationship.
Amanda, by the way, is a great character. She is spoiled, no doubt, but
keeps Duncan a bit off balanced in a light hearted manner which gives
Duncan's character more depth. I like the interactions between Duncan
and Amanda.
Marita,
Tbe only thing I have to say is you must be a woman. If your were a
man, you'd know the answer to the questions you asked!

D,
Amanda is simply using whatever weapons she has at her disposal. She is
as tough as they come, but certainly is not above relying upon help if
possible. It's made very clear that Duncan is one of the best Immie
swordsmen alive. The fact that she uses him in no way detracts from her
toughness, it reinforces it. I think she honestly cares for Duncan, but
she always remembers that in the end, there can be only one.

We speculate on what has happened *off screen* so to say all the time.
Can't we grant that Amanda is taking care of herself very well during the
times she is not with DM? Take a look at the scene with the thief protege
in *The Colonel* ep. Amanda says she gave it all up for a man...yeah...
Duncan. I think she knows she must appear a little dependent or DM can't
get his hero/protector fix.
I think she truly loves DM, but she love Amanda also. It was said in
Pharoah's Daughter..."Don't women use sex any more to get what they
want?", I forget DM's reply. But I think that is just what Amanda is
doing. The time of Gathering is here remember...she wants every advantage
she can get (smart cookie)...and she knows her best edge on survival is
DMOTCM.
I think one of the best indications of DM and Amanda's differences is in
the Eurominutes of "Return of Amanda" - in the scene after the "where is
the tattoo" scene (sigh!), when they are lying in bed, before the USA
version when DM says "Why can't I just smile" - Amanda says something
like "I could really get used to this" and DM replies "For 2 or 3 days?"
- I think DM realizes that Amanda is not the domestic-scene type
(witness her occasional attempts to cook dinner) and I think that he
enjoys the type of domesticity he had with Tess, and so he realizes that
he and Amanda couldn't possibly make it together long term, no matter
what they feel for each other.
They actually did try a while, in early season 4(?), for several eps in
a row, until "The Colonel", when Amanda's friend was almost killed and
she couldn't handle the guilt...she had to cut out and "get away by
herself" to deal with it.
Kathy
Physically, I think Amanda is more attractive than Tessa. I thought I
would hate it when she did the platinum blonde thing, but she was able
to do it well. I did have the pleasure of going to the first Con, and
she looked as good in real life (however, I must admit that Peter
Wingfield held most of my attention and Jim Byrnes can really flash
those eyes at a woman!!!!) I also like the fact that EG is tall (5'10")
because I am too! Its nice seeing an actor/tress on tv and knowing that
you will not tower over them in real life!

I'm sure no one else cares but me, but....
I'm gonna have to go with MaritaCro on this one. Amanda just has
never done it for me, I'm afraid. Something about her sets me off. That
said, Most of the female types with whom (ooh, grammar) I've watched HL
are also not big Amanda fans. I'd be curious to know: How many gals,
chicks, ladies, females, women, womyn, etc. like Amande, and how many
don't? And why? And does anyone but me think it's time that a female
Immortal showed up who isn't a complete wimp (most of them) or Amanda?
How about a woman of REAL substance.
I'm sure I'll catch a lot of heat for this. Don't get me wrong.
I like Amanda OKAY, but I think there's definite room for improvement.

Bleah! No offense to the actress that plays Amanda but I'd pick Alexandra
10 times out of 10. Amanda has her attributes but beyond those 2 things I
see little to recommend her. Alexandra is gorgeous and sexy and classy.
She has a great accent and dancing eyes (OK, OK, I'll stop! :-)
The Tessa character seemed to fit Duncan a lot more. I see him as going
for her much more naturally. I see her as an effective character for the
show. As for the insinuations that she is weak or whiney, HA! She was a
strong and capable character even is she wasn't Superwoman(tm). And that
first episode where she was tied up...well...hrm.
The Amanda character is a sleeze with little honor. I think if they had
Duncan staying away from her, but her causing him problems all the time
it'd be more realistic and I'd like her character much more. Her
character would be more internally consistant. Heck, Duncan would be more
internally consistant.
Oh and I saw the Victoria Secrets commercial. Dennis Rodman turned AP
into "the other guy in the commercial". It didn't seem to work AP's
features very well (not that it matters much, eh?) but heck; let the
ladies decide that.

Interesting question, Regina. I think it is the female version of the
AP v the ROG debate. I can see why women are attracted to Duncan, but
not Methos. Yet, the posts here make it very clear that many women
prefer Methos to Duncan. I think it's the same with Tessa v. Amanda.

The problem with Tessa was that her strength seemed to come and go.
Sometimes she was really tough but sometimes she could be amazingly whiny.
Mountain Men is the best example of this: she spent most of the episode
trying to turn the three kidnappers against each other, and then started
screaming and whining when one of them killed another. What on earth did
she think he was going to do? Most of the time I really like her, but I
have to admit that sometimes I wish Duncan would just duct-tape her mouth
shut.

Sleeze? I do think that's being a little harsh. Sure, she's a thief, but
then you're also talking about people who kill to survive. *shrug* Not only
that, but she IS (or was?) trying to give it up for Duncan. That's not
exactly what I refer to as sleezy. Sure she tends to cause trouble, but not
always. I quite believe that she does love Duncan...such things are not
beyond her. Observe her love and loyalty for Rebecca.
And as for Duncan's love for her, she's his weak spot. Maybe he shouldn't
love her, but he does. And he has explained his feelings about Amanda, in
part, to Tessa. ("Lady and the Tiger") Something to the effect of "she made
me smile when I didn't have much to smile about." Which she always tends to
do...eventually.
I donno. I'm an Amanda fan, too. She's not perfect...but sleaze?!?
Definately not.

Hear! Hear! :) :)

Well.... I'm a woman and I love Amanda. I don't think she's the right
woman for Duncan as a life partner, but gawds is she ever *fun*. I don't
think she is a physically beautiful as Tessa, but that is just my
personal preference. (The exception is that episode with the counterfeit
plates where they had flashbacks to WWII and she was singing at some club
in this little black halter and shorts and heels, very D/s, yummmm!) I
adore her playful attitude, her daring, her live-on-the-edge lifestyle.
Duncan needs someone like that now and then to keep him from being so
angst-ridden that he sinks under the weight of his own personality.
I agree, too, that we need more "real" women immies. The only strong
female immies we see are either Amanda, evil, or on the verge of being
evil (Ceirdwyn and Rebecca being the exceptions). I'd love to see one

There have been a few female immies but I have to agree that most of
them are lousy fighters. I can only assume that they survive mainly
by running away and taking the heads of more vulnerable immies. The
exceptions to this seem to Cierwyn (sp?) and Rebecca. Unfortunately
Rebecca lost her head because she fell in love with a man who, despite
knowing all about her, wouldn't do as he was told at a vital moment.
I think we need a female immie who is a good fighter and as pragmatic
as, say, Methos. Someone who doesn't fall under DMs spell (like the
rest of us) but treats him as no better than an equal.

When I first "met" Amanda in The Lady & The Tiger, I didn't like her much,
more like a pest than a real irritant. Then, when I saw her in The Return of
Amanda, I strongly disliked her, mostly because Tessa just died and Mac was
still mourning her and needed a friend, not a lover, even though they ended
up in bed together and she did make him laugh and smile, if for a short time.
When she showed up again in Cross of St. Antoine, I started to like her a
little better. More of a friend that Mac needed. And then, in Finale I &
II, I finally decided she's not as bad as I first thought. I don't think of
her as Mac's "Love of His Life" like Tessa, but a good friend and occassional
lover. This really gelled for me in the Finale eps. She has made him laugh
when he needed it and consoled him in bed when he was lonely. I do wish he
could meet another woman that he really loves like he did Tessa, but somehow
I don't think it will happen, esp. if this is gonna be the last season. :(
Too bad. Duncan deserves a deeper love than Amanda can give him. As always,

I sort of like Amanda...who is way better than Dr (h-s) Anne. I like
Amanda better than "Why don't you quit the game and...." Tessa, who
was about as annoying (to me) as "when ya gonna tell me what's going
on" Charlie. I was pretty much glad when Charlie died, and I was not
unhappy to see Tessa go, either. I like Amanda better, bless her evil
little heart. She's interesting and to me, seems more independant
than Tessa. And I really think she does care about OPTH, though she
doesn't emote well in the soft squishy female sense of the word.
Heck, she's not really a frilled white organdy type of person. She's
more of a black leather type person. (Makes me wonder about their sex

like Amanda, and I'm female. Never did get the point of "womyn"

I like Amanda she has spunk for lack of a better word. She gets into
sooooo much trouble.
You didn't ask this but so far as Tessa is concerned "something about
her sets me off". Off subject slightly but I have never liked the
actress Shelly Long either. I have never been able to watch anything
she has done for very long. I think it is more the actress than the
character. Kind of like if you have ever met a person and taken an
immediate dislike to them without knowing why.

Uh, exactly how does Charlie fit into a list of Duncan's girlfriends? Unless,
of course, there was something they weren't telling us all.
I've always liked Tessa better than Amanda, especially since they chose
an older, not conventionally beautiful woman to play Duncan's true love
I do think Tessa is beautiful, but in a understated, classical way.
Her charachter does tend to say things like, "Duncan, I'm scared!",
but I prefer that over Amanda's devil-may-care attitude that though
is mixed with affection, tends to get people in trouble and sometimes
near death. (Also, Amanda has incredible skinny legs that I find
revolting. They are too thin!)

I wasn't going to get involved in the whole Tessa/Amanda thing, but since
you asked... I think both women were/are good for Duncan, but for
different reasons. Tessa is one of his Great Loves, maybe THE Great Love
of his life. For 400 years he had not told any other mortal woman about
his immortality until Tessa. They had a "one-ness" of souls that overcame
all the inherent problems of the mortal/immortal relationship. Whether
Tessa was strong or weak or whatever is not relevant to the relationship,
they loved each other and that was enough.
As a fellow immortal, Amanda brings an understanding to the relationship
with Duncan that Tessa never could. They are equals, they are friends,
they are lovers, and they are (at least to some degree) in love with each
other. She is unpredictable and spontaneous which keeps him from staying
too serious about life ("She made me laugh when there wasn't much to laugh
about"), and having lived through the same eras as he has, she understands
how he was raised, and that as liberated as he may try to become, he will
always be an old fashioned "open the door for her/protect the lady" kind
of guy. There is an ease and understanding in the relationship that
allows both of them to come and go as necessary, and yet always be there
for the other if needed. And it seems to work for them. Amanda is not
the perfect love of his life, but she is a very comfortable relationship
for him.
So, I like both Tessa and Amanda, for different reasons.

I like the fun and lightheartedness that Amanda brings out
in DM. She is an interesting, independent character, but not
my favorite and NOT DM's love of his life. I have to agree with
you that HL needs a regular female immie that could hold
her ground against DM, RR, ROG, & Amanda.
Someone like Ceirdwyn. How about it TPTB? Willing to

In a match between the two I'd bet on Ceirdwyn myself.
Of course she would have to spare Mandy for DM's sake. He's such

I agree with your comments about Tessa and Amanda. Amanda, I think,
really does love DM, but she can't bring herself to say it after
centuries of being so independent of men. Saying "I love you" would
be too much like an admission of dependence on DM. It doesn't really
matter that he knows, she still can't say it.
About Charlie, though, I've got to disagree. Of all of Duncan's
mortal friends, excepting Joe, of course (and many of his Immie
friends as well) Charlie was the most entertaining. Unlike Maurice
and others, Charlie was more than just a stereotypical character
placed in an unconventional setting. He was honorable, like DM, yet
streetwise (a rare combo). He was REAL. I hated to see him get killed
off.
As for Charlie asking Duncan what was going on, that would have to be
Duncan's fault. Some very bizarre things started happening when DM
showed up, and like any normal human, he wanted to know what the hell
was going on. The weirder it got, the more he needed to know. After
all, he nearly got killed by Horton's renegades after seeing DM get
"killed"; wouldn't you like to know why someone you saw die was up
and walking while you suffered a non-fatal injury and were laid-up in
a hospital bed?

*grin* Had to add my two cents here. In my case, it's not really
the looks of the darling ROG that makes the package. It's the
attitude, the poise, the je ne sais quoi...not particularly the bod.
I mean, really, (apologies to Barb in advance) he's not classically

all respects. Given a choice (do I HAVE to make a choice? Can't I
have both? Please? This *is* fantasy, here...), though, I'd have to
say that I would probably trip Methos first...must be that dry wit, I
suppose. But I wouldn't LIKE making the choice. (In case anyone's
interested, Dawson is third, the evil guy from the first movie (what
can I say...I'm a sucker for guys with extra holes in their bods...),
and Xavier St. Cloud are fourth and fifth. RR is a very distant

Don't apologize, dear. I've never stated otherwise.
I've got the Dashing Duncan's poster up on me wall

While I admit to a preference for lanky dudes with

at the sight of skinny Brits, my fondness for the oh-so

Ok, I can't really comment on attractivness nd such forth, being a straight
guy and all. however, if it comes down to which of the two guys I most would
try to be like, it would be Methos all the way. He's just too cool. I'll
agree, there's something about him. Where Duncan is obviously very cool,
Methos brings it across in much more subtle, and therefore more effective,
ways.
Plus, he gets ALL the best lines.

I would LOVE to see her again (Cierdwyn). You think if we'd harass Rysher

Jessica, Jessica. This is fantasy! Why can't we end up in bed with all
of them -- one for every night of the week?????
Just call me D.
Anyway, I agree with both sides of this argument! How's that for
diplomacy. I didn't like Tessa at first - she seemed whiny to me. But
then, after I got the season 1 tapes and watched some of the earlier eps
with her in them - I thought she really was a strong character. I think
the problem was that when the writers wanted her to seem vulnerable, they
made her whiney instead. That really rubbed. Basically, though I liked
her, but could see why she had to go. The time had come and, it was a
great ep! (not her being killed of course). Her character was limiting
the story lines. Didn't you notice toward the end all we saw of Tessa was
in scenes here and there, sort of an "also ran". "Oh, by the way, we
haven't seen Tessa in this ep yet, let's show her working on a sculpture."
It was sad. But three character lines are hard to keep going. Ever
notice the problem on Lois & Clark?
I also like Amanda. The characters are apples and oranges, so quit trying
to compare them. Amanda makes Duncan laugh and remember what their lives
are about. I think she also keeps him sane because she is one of them and
can understand like no one else -- not even Tessa. He can let down his
guard with her (well almost). Like he said in "Lady. . ." "More like a
bad habit." That says it all. And, she is a good character because she
comes and goes. Imagine how boring it would get with a steady love
interest like Tessa. It would be great for awhile, but eventually they'd
have to get rid of her. With Amanda, they can have her show up and leave,
leaving our boy to play the field for our fantasy and delights.
I can't wait to see Double Jeopardy (hey! I got it right. Keep trying to
call is Double Trouble). I liked Renee. Also, I liked Beth in that ep
"The Dictator??" or something like that. With the guy who killed the
president of his country and there was a guy who was trying to assassinate
him and Duncan couldn't interfere because he had given his word not to 75
years ago.
I like it better when Duncan has variety in his life. Amanda is the one
constant -- someone he can always count on. Sometimes being a friend is
more important than being a lover.
Let's not mention Dr. Anne (hawk spit). Big mistake there! Terrible.
Just call me D.
I'm typing and I can't shut up, again.
If DM and ROG had gone to high school with me, I would have had a massive
crush on DM and gone steady with ROG.

I agree with the bit about Methos. :) If I was given a choice between
Duncan and Methos, I'd have to go with Methos. (That would be *quite* a
desicion...) There's something kinda scary about being with a guy who's
so... *gorgeous.* Methos is a little more ordinary looking, with the
lankyness (is that a word?) I kinda like. And he's got a wicked sense of
humor...
Of course, if I was actually given the opportunity to curl up in front of
the fire with either of them, I'd probably be in shock for a week. ;)

The only thing I really didn't like about Charlie was more the writers
fault than anything, (IMHO). He was *supposed* to be an ex-Green Barret,
or something like that, but he NEVER acts like it. It was his stupid
actions that got him shot by Horton, and what a *wimp* he was when camping
with Duncan in "Bless the Child".
However, If I were him, I think I'd have been even more insistant about
asking Duncan for some kind of explanations.

OK,I prefer Methos and not DM & I don't think I'm an exception.
I've noticed that men with personalities that I really like get better
looking as time goes on. While men who irritate me get less and less good
looking.
I took a unoffical poll of the women I work with to see if this works for
them too. Here are the results.
Agree - 3 (good personality improves looks)
Disagree - 2 (looks are most important)
No Opinion - 2 (male - I didn't ask them)
No Opinion - 1 (female - thought the question was "stupid")
Also look at Lyle Lovett & Julia Roberts. I would think the guy would be a
riot, have you ever heard his songs? I suspect this is an example of
personality improving looks.
Anyway, this is a possible explanation for the popularity of Methos, even
though lots of people seem to find him, ...UMMMMM, somewhat challenged in the
drop-dead georgeous department.

And yes, a thief. Thieves are sleezes. Killing to survive is one thing,
stealing for fun & profit is another. If you know someone who had got
robbed, ask them what they think of the thief. But wait, there's more!
Setting up Duncan for the guy she was traveling with and vice versa (I
think it was lady & the tiger? - the one with the book she tried to
steal).
Stealing the guy's head when Duncan had won the fight (I thought immies
stayed out of each others fights).
Wheedling Duncan for help (god i hate that) only to suck him in to some
scheme of hers. Then giving a cute pout to say "awww, forgive me". Oh
and I don't find her pout cute.

Now, I would -never- EVER think of Methos as ordinary looking. I think DM
fits with the classic-good-looks model, and Methos has a different kind of
cuteness. I like different. IMHO Methos is much better looking that DM.
(Weeelllll, not "much" better, but still better.) I'm not sure if it's
looks, voice <swoon> or that great sense of humor, but every time I hear
"the alternative is unthinkable" I have to sit down.

Duncan is EXTREMELY good looking, I will grant you
that. He's got a great smile, and gorgeous eyes but
he doesnt IMNSHO come CLOSE to holding a candle to
Methos!! I can't quite place my finger on it.
I dont know, does anyone else find that Methos has
a certain quality that no one else has? You can
SEE in his eyes (Oh those eyes!! *drooooool* -- Oh
shoot I think my computer just shorted out) the
centuries that he's lived. I dont know how ROG
does it - maybe its his facial expressions - but
somehow he without saying a word is able to convey
all the things he's seen throuought the centuries.
The best part of him tho, is that DESPITE the fact
that he's seen everything just about under the sun,
life still holds wonder to him -- he still feels
that pain of losing someone he loves, the joy of
discovering new love, etc.
I think its the voice too, but when (oh shoot I
cant remember her name) whats her face asks something
about if he ever wanted time to stand still you
could see the pain in his face as the cruel irony
of the statement struck him. THAT to me is the
ultimate Methos moment.

He does have that elusive quality that makes us go mad. :) Has anyone
seen The Truth About Cats and Dogs. Ben Chaplin (i think) in that
movie had a voice similar to ROG's and it made me melt. (And he was
cute too :) ) Oh well, I'll just go back and lust in private. :)

Nice to hear from you again, BJ, even if you are kinda disagreeing with
me. :)
I must say in Charlie's defense that his reaction to seeing Duncan
getting shot was actually pretty normal in TV and movies. Regardless of
character, if someone sees his/her friend shot, (s)he'll react out of
emotion, not reason. Common sense would dictate that Charlie remain
hidden or run like hell, but his friendship with Duncan and his instant
grief overwhelmed common sense, and he rushed to DM. Whether this
happens in real life or not, I wouldn't know (fortunately), but it's
pretty much accpepted TV-sidekick reaction.
As for "Bless This Child", you make an excellent point. One which I
can't argue with. :(

Personally, my friend Meg and I like both of them. As Meg said, they are both
so different it is hard to compare with them. Tessa is cool because she was
Duncan's truelove, she tried to understand him as much as she could, and she
put up with a lot of stuff for him. Amanda...well, she's just cool. She's
funny, and usually keps Duncan on his toes. At least he's never bored when
she's around! Plus, she's way cooler than Anne. *shiver* Anyway, I _do_ miss
Tessa though, mostly because it's obvious Duncan still loves her.

Duncan, on the other hand, does find her pout cute. Well nigh
irresistable, in fact.

Why do you think he wouldn't want to sleep with her?? They were already
lovers in the flashbacks to the time of the young Bonnie Prince Charlie.
I'd love to see her come back, too. Especially in a real relationship with
Duncan. (Amanda's ok, I guess. But only in a very casual relationship
with DM)

I'd like to see Ceirdwyn back, but she would prbably end up treating
Duncan like a child seing how much older she is. in fact why dosen't he
find an immortal HIS age to settle down with instead of 1200 year old
Amanda or mortal Tessa <R.I.P> who I certantly miss and Duncan still does?

It depends, some times they look better, then other times.
