A while back our newspaper ran an artical on what type of man a woman is
attracted to. They showed Sean Connery and Leo D'Caprio (sp). Can you beleive
that Leo was considered more attractive. It had something to do with him have
more delicate features. Yuck! I've always felt men like Sean Connery, Adrian
Paul, Gene Kelly, Tom Selleck were the most handsom. To me, Leo is a wimp.

It has to do with age groups and confidence in one's self. Supposedly teens
are more attracted to the *pretty boys* - the delicate featured, almost
androgynous actors and pop singers (Leo DC) - because they are
instinctively perceived as *safe*. As we get older and more confident in
our womanhood, we are drawn to the more *masculine* type of face - stronger
features, a certain air of *danger* (SC).

Surely this must have been intentional on the part of the producers of the show. I
can remember going to see the original Highlander movie many years ago and (knowing
nothing about it going in except that Sean Connery was in it) being very surprised
that he was playing the part of some Spanish guy and not the "highlander" himself!!
Of course, Christopher Lambert was and always will be Connor McCleod and after the
initial shock, it's hard to see Connery as anyone in the Highlander universe but
Ramirez. (Before being brought back to life in Highlander II...ugh, but why even
mention such a distatsteful subject? Sorry)
Still, others must have had the same thought. Connery, a bit younger, would have
been perfect in the role of Connor. So when Connor was reshaped into Duncan for the
tv series, why not get the most Conneryesque actor they could find to play the
part? A wonderful bit of casting when you think about it...making Duncan a sort of
composite of both of the heroes of the original movie.
Is it possible?

Granted. Perhaps I overstated the case.
Still, I think there might be something intentional in the resemblance; or at the
very least it didn't _hurt_ AP that he looks like SC. In my view, Sean Connery just
seems to belong in the Highlander universe. Maybe it was this sense, and not a
desire to create a composite character or lure fans of the movies into watching the
series, that led the producers to cast an actor who bears a strong physical (and I
think just as importantly, vocal) resemblance to Adrian Paul.
Of course, AP had a lot going for him on his own terms, and it's pretty hard to
imagine Duncan being played by anyone else.
With the obvious exception of Jim Carrey, that is.

That's interesting Jette. I must be against the norm. I have always been more
fond of the older more masculine man, even in my teens. And I definantly was
not a self-confident teen. Even though I am more found of a masculine male, I
have found David Bowie intriging (sp) since I was a teen and into adulthood. I
think its his eyes and voice.
How does every else feel about this? Have you always perffered a certain
physical type or have you tastes changed over time as you mature? I would be
intereted in both the ladies and the gentlemen's opions.
Katie
Definate *physical* type? No. Every single one of *my men* is different,
physically - but there is a resemblance between many of them in personality.
Probably you wouldn't recognise some of them, being UK based shows.
(in rough date order)
Adam Svenson/Captain Blue (ok, he was a puppet, but I was a little girl)
Commander Straker (strangely enough, played by the actor who supplied
Captain Blue's voice - a fact I didn't realise till much later)
Hannibal Heyes (as played by Pete Duel)
Arthur (from Arthur of the Britains - a dark, broody man with a big sword
<g>)
His friend Kai (a blonde broody man with a big sword <bg>)
Tarot from Ace of Wands.
Hosteen Storm (from the novel 'Beastmaster' - didn't look squat like Marc
Singer!)
Ker Avon
Starbuck
Templeton 'Faceman' Peck
Johnny Alpha (graphic novel character)
Joe Dawson.

Oh god....confession time. In my *early teen* years, as far as celebs were
concerned, it was all the girly boys, Sean Cassidy. Leif Garrett, Andy Gibb.
In real life I liked the tall boys, don't know if they were "pretty". I kept
dating taller and taller, blonder and blonder boys, until I ended up with my
6'3" Dutch green eyed boy with the big nose. Now...AP, PW are who I find
attractive. I think I would have found SK attractive if I was ten years or
more younger, but now I just find him "cute". Even in person, I only felt
motherly toward him, and he's only 4 years or so younger than myself. I don't
even think Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) is too-hunky-too-live-without since finding
AP and PW. But I see people "inside out" - if I like the person, I'll find
them attractive. If I think they are creepy, I will find them ugly. I have
friends who I vary in opinion of depending on their behavior.
Now I have produced my own little boys, and they are guaranteed to be tall,
thin, muscular, healthy guys. I think they will end up being my ideal men.
And I will be just so dang proud of myself. (Godhelptheevilbi#ches who tries
to marry them! <G>)

Hey Scott, welcome! I'm a new poster, long time lurker myself.
I'm sure someone will post the correct information, but I believe AP was
interested in the Bond role but either had other obligations or was passed
over.

Welcome to the sandbox, Scott.
I've never really seen the resemblance between AP and SC. They both have
dark hair. Okay But I think AP is immensely attractive and I never felt
that way about SC. The "young" SC that I remember always comes with a
narrow necktie and a smug look on his face. A 60s/70s kind o' guy. The
perfect James Bond for his time. And now I think Pierce Brosnan is the
perfect James Bond for <now>. Absolutely gorgeous, obviously smug and
obviously in control. I wanted Brosnan to do Bond ever since I was a fan of
Remington Steele. AP could <do> James Bond, but I'm perfectly content to
have him doing other things while Brosnan is at the helm of Bond. It would
be nice if AP could make a splash on the big screen, and if things ever get
moving, he'll have that opportunity as Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.
Personally, I see him as more the Cary Grant type ... light, romantic
comedy with the occasional foray into the dark side. He tends to overplay
on comedy, but he could improve. I see him doin' the kind of stuff Kevin
Kline does better than anyone else right now.
IMHO

Yup, AP was passed over on the Bond role.

There's something about the picture of AP on the front of the
first video set that really reminds me of SC. But, I also think
that AP is very much his own type...

I'm with you here. I guess we're both against the norm. <g>
(That's an interesting theory Jette...)
I don't understand Leo's attraction for instance, and wouldn't
have even as a teen. Pretty boys never have done anything for
me, as they (unfairly or not) convey superficiality to me.
(It always surprises me when AP is described as pretty.
He's handsome, yes, but his face has much more character and
depth in it than the faces of guys that I think of as
pretty...)
But perhaps that is because it was DM who made me notice Adrian
Paul, not the other way around. :-)
My teenhood was full of these young idols like Bobby Sherman and
David Cassidy, and they did nothing for me. I always watched TV
shows and movies with older, sort of rugged looking guys,
although I don't really remember having a crush on anyone...
I think today's stars are mostly disappointing, both male and
female. There are some very good actors and there are stars,
but the two don't often seem to coincide any more. I can count
on the fingers of one hand the number of actors who even come
close to rivalling the many great stars of the past.
This probably has a lot to do with the collapse of the studio
system, but I think that it has to do with an emphasis on
appearance over substance, too.
IMO...

That resemblance is commented on constantly around these here parts.
(It's the eyebrows, isn't it?)
NiH
I am also currently fond of some pretty types such as Dylan McDermott on The
Practice and Robert Leeshock on EFC. They're not only pretty, but they angst
beautifully. That's when I like AP best. He's too much of a mature male to be
pretty, but he's so good at angst.
Since I'm bi, there are also women. My main female adoration objects are EG
and Alyssa Milano on Charmed, but I also love Anna Galvin (formerly Robin Hood)
who's on a few Sentinel eps this season..

Only kidding, although as a one-off guest shot, I think Jim Carrey would make an
interesting immortal. I would put him in a category called People Who Don't Seem

Might Work, or PWDSLTWBWCAIBWYTAITMW for short. This list includes the following:
Jim Carrey
Callista Flockhart (no idea whether I'm spelling that right)
Katie Couric (from the Today show)
Michael J. Fox
Biff Henderson
I'm sure there are lots of others.

I, too, was struck by the resemblence in that scene. SC was singing with
the biggest smile, and looked just like AP. I think the resembelence is,
also in the structure of their noses and wide smiles. (I think this may
call for a serious research project, perhaps I can get an AP/SC grant.)
When I showed my class the movie for the first time (St. Pats. Day) I sat at

An interesting question. I don't think I've had favorite physical type as much as
a favorite personality type, though of course the personality judgement has to be
based on guesses and characters played when it comes to stars.
I liked Ilya Kuriakin(sp?) over Napoleon Solo, Starsky over Hutch, always thought
Robert Lansing was extremely attractrive (and was very disappointed when the "Gary
Seven" episode of ST:TOS *didn't* turn out to be a pilot), fell for Bobby Sherman
(or at least Jeremy Bolt), and never missed Thomas Sullivan Magnum (and sat through
some not-so-great movies to watch Tom Selleck).
I like a little bit of "rugged" in my drool objects, and a sense of humor and/or
vulnerability help tremendously, too.
However, *none* of my past interests inspired me to join a fan club or seek out
other fans or go to conventions, etc., etc., etc. I really believe that DM - AP
was a match made in television heaven -> a marvelous character brought to life
incredibly beautifully by a wonderful actor....

Did I mention Don Knotts?
Actually, the entire cast of the original Andy Griffith show would be interesting.
Andy could be a kind of Connoresque immortal with Ken Berry his Duncan, if you see
what I mean.
But especially good Mayberry immortals would be Floyd the Barber (thus explaining
his fascination with sharp objects) and Ernest T. Bass, who would make a really
good psycho Kurgan kind of immortal.
And then there's Aunt Bea.
You know, I've had more than 8 years on Usenet (although a newbie to ATH) and I do

That was the guy! Ernest T. Bass himself! And thanks for reminding me of the
Darlings. We could have an exchange something like this...
It is late at night. In a clearing in the woods just outside Mayberry, Duncan
MacLeod, sensing the nearby presence of one or more immortals, comes face to face
with an old man, a "beautiful" young girl, and a gang of big dumb-looking guys.
Mac: --I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.--
Gang of Big Dumb-Looking Guys: ...[Silence]...
Mac: --I will fight ye, one at a time or all at once if I must.--
Gang of Big Dumb-Looking Guys: ...[Silence]...
Mac: [Reaches into his coat and draws out his sword.]
Gang of Big Dumb-Looking Guys: [Reach into their coats and pull out a banjo, a
fiddle, a harmonica, etc.]
Pa Darling: --Now lookie here, Stranger. You done got the boys ALL RILED UP!!--
Gang of Big Dumb-Looking Guys: ...[Silence, accompanied by slight drooling]...
Mac: [Confused] --Ummm...maybe I misread the signs...--
Pa Darling: --Signs? What signs? Where did you come from, Mt. Pilot? And what
brings you round these parts, anyway? You some kind of Revenuer?--
ETB: [Enters the clearing, wielding an axe] I'm here, it's me, it's Ernest T!!
Mac: --So it's you...--
ETB: --Ain't nobody gonna come between me and my darlin' Rowena...--
[Mac and Ernest T. square off. It's a pretty straightforward confrontation. Ernest
T. Bass fights hard, but lacks finesse. Duncan takes his head.]
Pa Darling: --Why we're much obliged to you, Stranger. Been wantin' to do that
myself for some time, but Sheriff Taylor don't look kindly on---
[The air is charged with the flash of a very mild quickening.]
Pa Darling: --Oooooie! We might could get some rain out of that sky. Let's play a
song, boys. Stranger, is there any tune you're partial to?
Mac: --Would you fellows happen to know "Be My Salty Dog?"
Rowena: --Aw, that one always makes me cry!!--
Phil
Stay tuned, next week I'm going to introduce Duncan to the Partridge family...

Well, all references to their appearance aside, I always though they were quite
talented musicians. And I really do love the song "Salty Dog." However, it doesn't
move me in the same way it did Rowena.

Hmmmmm....Danny could almost have a young Richie thing going. Keith is too good.
Let's add David Cassidy as a major contender to our list, along with little brother
Shaun. Can't you see either one of those guys duking it out with Michael J. Fox?

Ya might have something there, LadyReb. Charlene does sound right. But so does
Ernest T. talking about his beloved Rowena. Or Ramona. Or something along those

I don't think so. It's more upbeat than that:
Dooley... lookin for a dollar
Dooley... made his momma holler
Dooley... da da da da da da
Da da da DA DA da
These are not the correct lyrics, but they give the feel. Return to Mayberry is on

No, no, no! Wrong John Boy. JB&B are two DJ's that broadcast a morning show

You know, thinking of that Tom Dooley song - I always wondered why I was
supposed to feel sorry for him?
"He met her in the morning
before he took her life
Met her in the morning
Stabbed her with his knife"
So - what was it about the murder that makes it a tragedy for =Tom= to die?

Well, since you asked....the only thing I think that PB has over AP is
the fact that he speaks better. AP I feel needs to work on his
diction, as an actor. He mumbles a bit too much at times.
As for the whole image and style, I think AP in a tux doing his spy
stuff has it all over PB. That, combined with his natural grace and
enormous physical talents...well, for me, it's a no-brainer.

I've read the supposedly true story of what really happened, but it was a
while back and I don't remember the all the details. Here's the general
idea. Tom was a soldier returning from the Civil War and somehow got
involved in a love triangle with his former sweetheart who was married and
the Laura girl. The story suggested that the married woman got Tom to kill
Laura because either she was jealous of her or becasue they contracted
siphilis(sp?) from her - wich all 3 of the supposedly had. The tradegy
depends on how you look at it and who you want to believe. Some people look
at it as another example of how the War of Northern Aggression destroyed
Southern way of life. Some people believe that Tom had nothing to do with
Laura's death and that he was either talked into doing it by his former
sweetheart or that she did it herself and he just took the blame. Either way
she was never bought to trial becasue right before he was hung he took all
the blame and said she had nothing to do with it. But that's just a rough
recap. There are books out there that explore the whole account, including
his trial.
LadyReb
I can't speak for Michael, but in JB&B's glossary on their website it just
says that a stupey (yes, that is spelled right, I double checked) is a stupid
person and that it comes from the name of the little dog on the front of
JB&B's Barrel of Laughs album. The dog was named Little Stupey. So the line
they use is "he's a stupey" but it sounds different sometimes and they often
just make up stuff off of the top of their head. They also use the word
stupe a lot as a shortened form of stupid.

Jette - I don't think we are supposed to feel sorry for him. I think the

No, no, LadyReb and William. 'Dean Men Can't Dance' is the musical about
college administrators that AP made during the second season hiatus.
Remember? AP plays the Dean of the Engineering College of a New England
school and dances three tangos. The best number, though, by my estimation
was the county fair number, where Anthony DeLongis and the Bob play carny
toughs who attack the deans and the undergraduates with long knives. The
Olsen twins and the actors in 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' play the
undergraduates - Buffy does a great melancholy number about her career
quandaries in contrapunto with AP's lyrics about the romance of civil
engineering as a career path for young women. I can't remember the names of
the actors who played the Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, and Fine Arts
Deans, but one of them - I think Fine Arts - plays one of the orderlies on
ER. Anyway, this number was fantastic. They do an Apache dance for the first
part, when ADL and the Bob are sneaking up on them with the knives. Then the
undergraduates surround them and beat them up and scare them off. It
reminded me of a cross between the fight in 'Carousel' where Billy gets
killed and the clambake number, with all the leaping and the horizontal
striped tee shirts. The other number I loved was when the college (which had
financial troubles) merged with a historically black college and they all
danced a version of Alvin Ailey's Revelations. The white New Englanders
exchanged their clampots for the parasols fo the antebellum era blacks. It
was the kind of inspired mixed motifs that H:TS was so good at. You should
rent it from Blockbuster. It's a lot better than that war movie.

William, what do you see as JB's style? For me, Sean C. *is*
James Bond, and none of the others came close. And, IMO, AP
would be much more likely to give Bond the kind of *presence*
that SC gave him than PB does.
In reverse to some fans, I never liked Brosnan, because he came
across as too pretty, whereas I like AP's looks because he
*doesn't* give me that impression. But I admit, PB did not seem
'pretty' in his Bond films.
Nevertheless, I only found him adequate as Bond. He just didn't
have the flair...
To me Bond is a mixture of sexuality, ruthlessness, supreme
confidence, and ingenuity, (among other things); and nothing
fazes him unless the bad guys kill a friend or lover. He is
not, shall we say, a respecter of rules... <g>
Well, anyway, I agree with Jarie here, I think AP could be all
of that. But I would like to hear more from you, William, as
to why you don't think that AP has the style... (Don't worry,
I left my sword at home. :-))
Btw, LOL, Maggie!

IMHO, PBasJB could easily pass in the most
elite circles, while APasJB *might* not,
but I've *seen* PBasJB (&PBasRS),
& notAPasJB, and AP is a capable
actor, so perhaps TPTB should let AP&PB
go 1/1 (ie, APvsPB) in RL?? <eg>

I have to agree with you on this one, William [can't believe I'm
saying this :-) ]
I have my one little theory about it. The first Bond movies I got to
see were all with Roger Moore, so to me he was the 1st JB, to which
all have to measure up. The thing about Roger Moore was that he had
humour. SC just wasn't the same (and I've seen all the JB-films thus
far, although those old ones have been a while).

No, never heard of those guys. I'm jealous that others have a good source of AG
trvivia. I have to rely on my memory of many hours/years wasted in front of the
tube.
