The first time we see Brenda she appears to be a woman in love with a sword.
'Baby, look at you," she says about the Toledo Salamanca broadsword found at
the latest site in the series of beheading homicides that are puzzling the
NYPD. We don't learn that she works in forensics until we see her in the lab
looking at readings for the corpse. She also frequents bars, but she
apparently isn't looking for Mr. Goodbar. Since she wouldn't let Connor walk
her home, we can infer that she isn't on a desperate search for a man in her
life when she meets Connor. She witnesses an aborted fight between Connor and
the Kurgan and is very inquisitive about she's seen and heard. We learn
through Connor that Brenda has written a book called The Metallurgy of Ancient
Swordmaking. The bio blurb about her tells Connor that she works for NYPD in
forensics. She visits Nash's Antiques hoping to confront Connor to ask him
more questions, but only finds Rachel. When Connor visits Brenda at her
apartment, she lies to him and says that she works for acquisitions at the
Metropolitan Museum. She becomes enraged when he shows her his copy of her
book and lets her know that he's aware she's been lying to him. She's very
interested in Connor's katana because it clearly isn't a modern sword. Yet
it's also clear that she has an interest in Connor himself when she hunts down
Russell Nash's birth certificate in Syracuse. She discovers that Connor has
had a series of birth certificates going back to the 18th century. He'd taken
the identity of a child who died soon after the mother died in childbirth every
time. Brenda finds it hard to believe that Connor could be that old. She
returns to Nash's Antiques to confront Connor a second time. She tells him
that she knows he's not Nash. She's amazed by Connor's sword collection, but
doesn't believe that he's 450 years old until Connor stabs himself and heals in
her presence. They kiss which leads to the horizontal mambo. We see them next
in the zoo in front of the lions' cage. When Connor shies away from commitment
she tells him that he's afraid to live. When Brenda returns home the Kurgan
is waiting for her. He abducts Brenda and drags her into a car. She screams
over his near collisions. The next time we see Brenda she's hanging from the
Silvercup sign where the Kurgan must have secured her in order to distract
Connor from their duel. Yet Brenda is no helpless damsel. She manages to free
herself after the sign collapses and is just in time to get Connor's sword back
to him after he had been disarmed. Connor isn't amazed by her resourcefulness.
He says "What took you so long," which shows that he expected Brenda to be
able to free herself without assistance. Brenda appears terrified by the
quickening, yet she stays. She shows herself to be one gutsy lady. The film
ends with Connor taking Brenda to Scotland. He kisses Brenda on a hillside
before the credits roll.

Questions For Further Study

1) How likely is it that a police forensicist would also be an expert on
ancient swordmaking? Is it merely a remarkable coincidence or was Connor fated
to meet such a woman?

2)Brenda has the same surname as Leo, the Whitlighter on Charmed. Is this a
coincidence or are Brenda and Leo Wyatt related? Alternatively, this could be
further evidence of my obsession with Leo.<g>

3)Brenda's professional dedication and inquisitiveness about Connor give her
attributes in common with Anne Lindsay of HL:TS. Compare Brenda to Anne. Is
Connor more or less compatible with Brenda than Duncan was with Anne?

4) Brenda obviously didn't fall in love with Connor at first sight. At what
point did Brenda's interest in Connor become romantic?

5) How long would you suppose that Brenda and Connor had been seeing each other
when she discusses commitment with him at the zoo? Is it the morning after
their first horizontal mambo, or has some time elapsed?

6) Would the Kurgan have kidnapped Brenda and expected Connor to come to her
rescue if she had only been a one night stand at that point?

7)Connor's comment "What kept you" after Brenda frees herself from the
Silvercup sign indicates a faith in Brenda's abilities. It assumes that he's
known her for a while. Connor told her at the zoo that he can't get involved,
but weren't they already involved?

8) Evaluate the longevity of the relationship between Connor and Brenda. How
long would they have stayed together after the end of the movie?

Disclaimer: I wrote my notes for this class at 6 am and hadn't been able to
sleep since 4am. Please make allowances for the fatigue poisons in my brain.

I don't think it would be too unlikely that she would be a forensic
specialist working for the police. I would guess she could be in the
equilvalent of the tools and implements section. I don't think anyone who
did this would be going out to murder investigations as a field operator
though. She would be a specialist working in a lab on stuff other people
gathered. So not to likely.

Don't know Leo

I think both were right to be suspicious. Connor was the prime suspect in a
murder so I sure would not trust him.

When he stabbed himself.

I don't think much time passed no more than 2 days but probably the next
day.

Sure

I just thought that was a smart alec remark. I don't think it was really
faith.

Connor could read thoughts at the end and seemed happy with them so why not.

It was in the script <g>

Never seen it. (yes it airs here, I just never watch)

Swords are important to this lady. ;-)

Everyone needs a hobby.

Is it merely a remarkable coincidence or was Connor fated

I'm leaning towards coincidence right now.

Wouldn't know. I've never watched Charmed.

Alternatively, this could be

If you insist.

> 3)Brenda's professional dedication and inquisitiveness about Connor

> attributes in common with Anne Lindsay of HL:TS.

Brenda checked out Connor partially because his "name" is Russell Nash,
yet the Kurgan called him "MacLeod" and "Highlander". That started the
investigation, much in the same way Anne started to check out Duncan
after she found out he had no medical history. But then again, Connor
checked out Brenda, and went through her drawers when he went to dinner
at her place.

Compare Brenda to Anne. Is
> Connor more or less compatible with Brenda than Duncan was with Anne?

In both cases, they were replacements. Connor hadn't truly loved a
woman since Heather (except for a brief fling with Sarah Barrington in
the Final Dimension) and Duncan hadn't had a serious relationship since
Tessa died. Amanda would always be a part of Duncan's life, but Amanda
was Immortal, the others weren't.

> 4) Brenda obviously didn't fall in love with Connor at first sight.
At what
> point did Brenda's interest in Connor become romantic?
>

According to the novel, she was always fascinated by the air of mystery
surrounding Connor. It just grew on her, and when Connor told her he
was Immortal and couldn't die, it seemed almost like she felt sorry for
him.

> 5) How long would you suppose that Brenda and Connor had been seeing
each other

It's the morning after. Actually, in the novel, they don't do the
horizontal mambo. They just spent the whole night talking, then went
to the zoo. But sex probably looks better on film than polite
conversation.

>
> 6) Would the Kurgan have kidnapped Brenda and expected Connor to come
to her

At that point, they've revealed their feelings for each other. There
is something there. But Connor is a MacLeod, just like Duncan, and Our
Favorite Boy Scout would have gone to save the damsel in distress, even
if it had been a one-night stand.

They were, whether he admitted it or not. As far as the "What kept
you?", I thought that that was just sarcasm on Connor's part.

Brenda. How

According to The Final Dimension, Brenda was killed in a car accident
in 1986-87. Connor walked away unharmed. That said, I would like to
believe that they would have stayed together for a long time.

Evidence of your obsession with Leo? Yeah, I'll buy that. <g>

I think Brenda was more compatible with Connor than Anne was with Duncan.
Brenda and Connor had more chemistry, and more importantly, she was able to
handle living with an Immortal.

>4) Brenda obviously didn't fall in love with Connor at first sight. At

Probably when he stabbed himself in front of her.

I think it was the morning after.

Probably not.

As far as I can tell, their relationship had just gotten started. But it was
already getting serious.

IIRC, Connor and Brenda were married, and she died in a car accident in 1990.

1) I think it could be a related field. I took criminal justice in school and
we had two forensic science classes, one of these classes was about the
development of society and forensics and delt alot with with diffrent wounds
from diffrent areas. Plus it seems to be in the same realm of science and
interest. It wasn't coinidence since she was trying to meet Connor even if she
didn't know who he was.
2)no comment
3)I think that Brenda and Connor would have been very compatable if she
lived.(damn Kell)I think that the two charactors are not very alike. Ann was
turned off bythe violence of immi life. Ann was a healer. Brenda was more
more adventureous. She was not turned off by the violence and danger and it
actully seemed like it turned her on.Not to mention that she was conditioned to
the violence by viewing its results at crime scenes.
4)I think that Brenda started truly fallin for Connor when He showed her more
intellegence then his pick up lines. No wonder Duncun gets all the good
women(HTS:tHE gATHERING) lol
5)about a night.yes
6) Of course Connor is as much of a hero as DM maybe more so since he fights
the good fight without enjoying life like DM.
7) I believe that Connor expected to see her there. He knew she was a tough
lady and smart plus he is the king of sarcasm.
8) I think they would have stayed together forever if stupid Kell didn't kill
her lol.
